I’m in debt with my student accommodation I can’t find support to help me because all my family are separated my parents are both in terrible situations and don’t talk to me I try to but it never works. Well I’m not in debt yet but my next months rent is on October 1st for £615 I can’t get a student loan because I’m an apprentice and I haven’t started work yet. What do I do? I had to leave home due to certain issues, I had £800 in my savings and spent it all on a deposit and rent for this place. I need to make atleast £615 somehow before Octobet 1st what do I do!!!???

How were you planning on paying the rent after you paid the deposit? I’m not sure you can make all that money by Tuesday. When is the student loan coming in? Don’t go for any payday loans, the interest rates are crippling

SnappyClappy · 26/09/2024 00:08

It’s not ideal but could you get an authorised overdraft on your bank account to cover it?
Do you have things you can sell to make that much?
A friend who could lend you the money?

Paperthin · 26/09/2024 00:10

Are you at college? If so go to see your student pastoral care / student support team for advice.
As an apprentice will you be getting a regular wage? When do you start? Suggest you speak to your bank and ask for a short term loan, cheaper than an overdraft.

Talk to student services, they should have someone to provide financial advice. They may even have emergency grants for those in difficult circumstances.

MacLanes · 26/09/2024 00:14

Please try this

TheBolterdahling · 26/09/2024 00:15

If it’s student accommodation is it through a college or private landlord? College should be sympathetic if you show them evidence your student grant is delayed and will be coming in oct

if not, speak to your bank about a short term loan or overdraft

really well done on getting your apprenticeship with no family support

MacLanes · 26/09/2024 00:15

Thank you ever so much guys

Don’t panic! A lot of us have been in this position. Student services are amazing. I got help very quickly when I was where you are now.

MacLanes · 26/09/2024 00:18

MacLanes · 26/09/2024 00:19

Could you direct me to the website I search up student services and alot of different things come up, so sorry to bother you all

The university is your first port of call. Ask student services for emergency cash from the hardship fund.

Beamur · 26/09/2024 00:23

Look up 'estranged from parents ' on your university website and it will take you to the right general area for support
UCAS also has information if you get maintenance loans

MacLanes · 26/09/2024 00:24

Only thing is my apprenticeship isn’t connected to a university will they still allow me to borrow money? Thank you

Lovelyview · 26/09/2024 00:28

What is your student loan connected to? Are you studying at a college?

CeruleanDive · 26/09/2024 00:29

Honestly, your uni/college absolutely should be the first place to ask for help. They have a duty of care to you.

See if you can find the details on their website. Here's an example of the sort of thing you're looking for: students.uca.ac.uk/student-services/advice/

caringcarer · 26/09/2024 00:30

I'm not sure if you are a student at University or a college but both have student services and nurseries to give out. Find the student welfare officer and explain your situation. They will want proof of how much rent you have to pay but once you provide that proof they should help you. At the very worst your Landlord can't kick you out the moment you don't pay your rent. Keep ringing the grant people to ask how much delay there will be and can they send you an email to confirm your money will arrive late due to a processing error. Are you sure you don't have any family who can help you out, an Aunt/Uncle/cousins/grandparents if your parents cannot help you out.

I have a nan but I don’t want to ask her for money because she has parkinsons disease and has a bad memory and I feel like she needs £615 more than me.

studying where?
youre educational provider is 1st stop. there will be (experienced)stff, you have to find them.student hardship is NOT new.please try to avoid loans/panic.

BrokenSushiLook · 26/09/2024 00:53

Apprentices are nit eligible for student loans. The employer providing you with the apprenticeship placement is supposed to be giving you a wage and paying the fees for the college-based part of your training. Did you register with student finance because you were initially going to be on a normal student course but subsequently changed to an apprenticeship?

Similarly if you previously registered for student accommodation before deciding to do an apprenticeship you may not be eligible to live there because buildings occupied solely by students are taxed differently to those who aren't students.

Lovelyview · 26/09/2024 00:55

wearehomesforstudents website is not very helpful. If your apprenticeship is linked to a college you could speak to their student support. If it isn't linked to a college you could speak to the employer providing the apprenticeship. You can phone the accommodation provider and say you will only be able to pay in mid-October and see what they say. You can borrow the money off your Gran and pay her back when your grant comes in in October. Good luck. I'm sure you'll be able to sort it out.
