I’m in debt with my student accommodation I can’t find support to help me because all my family are separated my parents are both in terrible situations and don’t talk to me I try to but it never works. Well I’m not in debt yet but my next months rent is on October 1st for £615 I can’t get a student loan because I’m an apprentice and I haven’t started work yet. What do I do? I had to leave home due to certain issues, I had £800 in my savings and spent it all on a deposit and rent for this place. I need to make atleast £615 somehow before Octobet 1st what do I do!!!???

Can you not just email the property manager and say your loan is delayed and pay it when you get paid?

My partner actually works for homesforstudents and chases debt of tens of thousands of students who hadnt been kicked out for not paying it. Or get an overdraft extension. Or sell some stuff, might not be what you want to sell but you have little options at the minute.

CandyLeBonBon · 26/09/2024 07:34

On an Apprenticeship AND in student accommodation? I didn't think that was possible? Speak to your employer.

redskydarknight · 26/09/2024 07:36

It's irrelevant that OP is in student accommodation. They are not a student. So a lot of the advice on this thread isn't applicable to them.

OP - you will be eligible for benefits, both now and probably even after you start work. Have you applied? In the short term, try asking your employer for an advance on wages. Ask the accommodation if you can pay in instalments (this will most likely be possible, but they won't advertise it).

It will be private accommodation that is typically rented to students. Not university accommodation.

Mcginty57 · 26/09/2024 07:40

Speak to the student flat, hopefully they'll be okay. Unbeknown to me until two weeks before my daughters tenancy was ending she hadn't paid a penny despite me having paid the first 4k and giving her money the whole year as she said she was skint after paying rent, they never notified me despite being guarantor and the contract saying if it was ten days late they would. I was hit with a 5.5k pay bull to be paid within two weeks. So they may be lenient and understanding hopefully, the key is communication. Did you have a guarantor?

Hello everyone,

We've had a number of reports from people concerned about this thread so, as we usually do in these circumstances, we're putting our heads round the door with some important reminders.

Right now we can't see any evidence to indicate that the OP isn't above board – if we did, we'd remove the thread straight away. But the truth is that, sadly, we at MNHQ can't know with 100% certainty that any poster is genuine, no matter who they are or how long they have been here. As frustrating as it is, we're not able to vouch for anyone here.

So we always ask users to remember that not everyone on the internet is who they say they are – and remind folk not to give more to another poster, either financially (in cash or gifts) or emotionally (in time or care and support) than they'd be prepared to lose if things went wrong. We strongly advise against parting with any cash or giving away your personal details, and if you receive a PM which makes you uneasy - report it to us and we’ll take a look.

We've compiled some useful links posted by Mumsnetters into a financial issues webguide, so that people experiencing difficulties can find all the relevant information in one place

Sorry to hijack your thread briefly there, OP – we really hope you get it all sorted soon.

Actually I was about to donate, so thank you. It's hard as I was an estranged student and it's horrible.

Apprentices are nit eligible for student loans. The employer providing you with the apprenticeship placement is supposed to be giving you a wage and paying the fees for the college-based part of your training. Did you register with student finance because you were initially going to be on a normal student course but subsequently changed to an apprenticeship?

Similarly if you previously registered for student accommodation before deciding to do an apprenticeship you may not be eligible to live there because buildings occupied solely by students are taxed differently to those who aren't students.

This. I dont know enough about Degree apprenticeships to know if rules are different but your posts read like this isnt what you are doing anyway.

DoIWantTo · 26/09/2024 08:16

@soberholic never ever donate to anonymous people on the internet. 90% of what you read online is lies, made up to tug at your heartstrings. You’d be throwing your money away to scammers.

Ellmau · 26/09/2024 08:24

If OP isn't actually a student she may be liable for council tax too.

Cantdoitalll · 26/09/2024 08:24

As a landlord I have had students come to me with payment issues (I’ve got one just now!)
best thing to do is email or call them, explain your cash flow situation and lack of family financial support and they will most likely be accommodating to your circumstances.

On occasion I’ve waived a month to get them back on their feet. I always appreciate when there is direct and open communication - it’s the students that ignore my messages that get my goat.
If you need help drafting an email come back to us and we can help you.

I would definitely speak to student services and also check out what benefits you’re entitled to.

I know it’s stressful but try not to worry, there are people who will want to help you.

Yeah. I usually know it, but I was also a homeless 18 year old student who got herself to uni and starved during A-levels, so you can maybe understand why I became stupid for a moment. Thanks for the reminder

Coruscations · 26/09/2024 08:28

There is usually a college overseeing apprenticeships. Find out about student support options offered by them.

Sailawaygirl · 26/09/2024 08:42

OK
First and easiest thing is to call bank / long on and apply for an arranged overdraft. That means the money can come out of your account and be minus in your account without extra big fees. ( just make sure your not in your over draft all the time)
2 check your benefits entilghltment ( link is up thread)
3 if still struggling see if company has a support for apprenticeships ( even just calling hr and explaining. Go to CAB. Call accommodation. Students get into loads of debt to accommodation all the time so don't panic !

freakinthespreadsheets · 26/09/2024 08:56

Others have suggested student services, which is a great shout.
Student bank accounts usually offer interest free overdraft so look into those and you may be able to get one open today/tomorrow.
You may need to pick up a second job just short term to smooth your cash flow and build a buffer for things like this, student accommodation is notorious for wanting paid before loans come in and most students don't realise this

Please never give money to strangers on the internet. MN gets loads of begging threads, especially in the run up to Christmas. If they strike a chord with you, donate to a relevant registered charity and you'll help someone deserving and avoid being scammed.

Ermintrudewasinnocent · 26/09/2024 08:57

I'm a senior academic and often see students with this sort of problem. Take evidence of the delay to your grant (an email will do) to student services and they should be able to get a delay to your accommodation payment for you.

A delayed grant payment is common and not your fault!

Except that OP is not a student and there is no grant (or even loan) coming!!

OP - I think you might be better to repost and just state that you are an apprentice struggling with rent. You have unfortunately muddied the waters by saying it is student accommodation (which makes no difference to your options).

LuluBlakey1 · 26/09/2024 09:37

Apprentices do not get student grants or student loans or student accommodation (via a university anyway). I am uneasy about this thread. They are funded via their employer who pays them a wage and all of their university fees.
What level apprenticeship are you on OP? That would be a start to understanding where you are in the whole system

Hoppinggreen · 26/09/2024 09:38

OP is NOT A STUDENT!!!!!
Please please RTFT as a lot of advice being given is irrelevant.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 26/09/2024 09:39

I assume if its an apprenticeship its affiliated to a college of some sort? I would approach them - when people on this thread have said "ask student services" thats what they mean - the student services at your college/uni. They will have options for someone in your situation.
I would also speak to your workplace - as an apprentice you wont be earning nearly enough to pay a months rent plus your other bills and food etc. Given your situation you need extra help and support - not just now but in the months to come.
Please please whatever you do dont get a payday loan, loans from friends etc - seek proper support.
You've done well to get this far and to get an apprenticeship so dont let this current hiccup ruin things for you, seek proper support and guidance. Good luck!

BrokenSushiLook · 26/09/2024 09:48

The standard wage for an apprentice is only about £850pm. Most apprentices live at home with their parents or have accommodation provided by their employer. Signing up for a £615pm accommodation package seems very unrealistic. You'll need to moonlight with another job to make ends meet if you really want to live there but I would recommend checking options to pull out of this expensive option and find something cheaper.

DizzyBumble · 26/09/2024 09:57

Sounds like OP is just fishing for people to send them money

TwigletsAndRadishes · 26/09/2024 10:00

Velvetandgold · 26/09/2024 05:53

OP you are getting a lot of bad advice due to your misinformation provided. Because you're not a student. I know you're going to be studying but it's not the same thing. A student is on a full time course and responsible for the fees themselves. They may work alongside their course. This is not you. You are an apprentice (or will be once the job starts) and it is a job, with the employer funding the study elements. You're unlikely to be entitled to any type of student-only finance. You're a person with a full time job, it just happens to be an apprenticeship. If your wage is low you may qualify for some universal credit even whilst working. It is not backdated so get the claim in NOW.

I'm glad you said that, I was thinking myself that some things were not adding up here and the OP could be being wrongly advised based on misunderstandings.

Although they mention getting a 'student grant' in one post, which muddies the waters further.

OP stay in your accommodation for now, don't pay if you don't have the money. Certainly don't borrow from friends or any dodgy sources. Professional student LLs will be used to people having delays and admin problems with their finance. In your case the rent will presumably need to come from your earned income as an apprentice. Student rent is usually paid by the student's parents or in the form of student loans and bursaries, so none of that will apply to you.

Speak urgently to whichever organisation arranged your apprenticeship scheme for you. That's the first port of call. They will have a support services department. There may be a financial support scheme to advance your first months rent until you get paid. Maybe not, but at least ask them first. If you do not have any family support at 18 then you are probably entitled to some support via universal credit, depending on your earnings and circumstances.
