Just curious to see what’s normal. We got on ladder a bit late (early 30s) we have since moved so in a house that we see as our forever home / most expensive we will own.

we currently have approx 45% equity in home worth around 425k (east midlands).

Oh I'm 42

GP78 · 13/09/2023 20:52

55% on house worth 510k but I am 46 😆😁

Pollywoddles · 13/09/2023 20:59

44 and we have 50% equity on a 700k house after buying 5 years ago. However we had a big deposit, house prices around here have shot up and we’ve renovated.

CaptainSeven · 13/09/2023 21:21

It all depends on the value doesn't it?

Based on value as of today today we have 50% equity and still have 21 years to pay the mortgage off.

While we were home owners at a "younger" age it wasn't really real as we could only afford interest only. So effectively renting from bank!

We didn't start paying repayment till nursery fees were over in 2015.

Baffled1989 · 13/09/2023 21:22

Negative equity here, new build, market plummeted, been here 5 years!

UneasyMe · 13/09/2023 21:22

45, 80%

UncleBobsUncle · 13/09/2023 21:27

About 70% but we are in a cheap part of the country

AnneElliott · 13/09/2023 21:27

Age 45 and we have approx 90% equity in our house which is probably worth £800k. We bought it for half that 10 years ago.

DowntonCrabby · 13/09/2023 21:28

39, probably £90k so 50%

StEtienne93 · 13/09/2023 21:44

I'm 38, live alone, and have approx 45% equity on a house worth approx £230k.

Lalaloulous · 13/09/2023 21:49

39 (DH 41) and we have 40% equity. Didn't meet until early 30s, married and bought first place at 34/36 so we are happy with that.

ThingyThings · 13/09/2023 22:14

Almost 0, bought less than a year ago with 10% deposit and I'm sure the value has dropped due to interest rate rises...

Bunnycat101 · 14/09/2023 12:23

We’ve got around 50% equity but I’d say around 25% of that was our original deposit and money we’ve put into it and 25% growth. We’ve got a rather large mortgage to pay off and that currently runs until late 60s.

Minikievs · 14/09/2023 12:32

Lone parent, 66% equity thanks to an inheritance.
That won't change any time soon though as I can't afford to over pay by any more than a minimal (pointless) amount. Mortgaged til I'm 62.

House worth about £280000

I have about 100k left on the mortgage

Ostryga · 14/09/2023 12:44

Mid-30s 100% on a house that’s around £390k. Bought it outright with an inheritance when it was £165k. Have spent a shit ton on it to make it lovely though.

southeastlady · 14/09/2023 14:13

I'm 40 DH is a few years younger.
Have £300,000 equity (House is worth £500k according to NatWest and we owe £200k)

We currently live in the South East and are considering moving to the Midlands where my family live when our son finishes secondary school.
So could be mortgage free or smaller mortgage in about 5 years but not sure whether to go for it or not

Wow sorry that turned into a ramble didnt it lol

Howtohandl · 16/09/2023 13:44

53% equity, house is worth £589k apparently, so we have around £318k equity. It’s nice to know as if we ever fell on really hard times, we could sell the house and still be able to buy a new build 4 bed in our area with the £318k and live mortgage free. In fact I have a secret desire to do that anyway as mortgage payments are about £900 as month and the house is a bit of a money pit sometimes with things going wrong, but DH would never agree and we do love the house and space!

We're right near the top end of your age bracket..

Colourfulponderings · 16/09/2023 14:24

41, 91% equity, house value 800k

FFSWhatToDoNow · 16/09/2023 14:26

99.96% of a house worth around £480k. Will be paid off by 46.

F0XCUB · 16/09/2023 14:32

How do you work it out? Our house is worth about 450k. Mortgage until I'm 60, I'm 46. We have still got 100k to pay back

F0XCUB · 16/09/2023 14:33
