Just curious to see what’s normal. We got on ladder a bit late (early 30s) we have since moved so in a house that we see as our forever home / most expensive we will own.

we currently have approx 45% equity in home worth around 425k (east midlands).

Excellent responses thank you all. While I realise there is no normal it’s been very good to get some understanding of where people are with their mortgages. I am hoping to be mortgage free by age 50 but that will require some over paying while in a position to do so.

47, 80% equity. 5 years mortgage left.

thdskdrggs · 02/09/2023 16:44

Not very much at all having also bought later, we are mid 30s with about 15%, not worried though as we had kids younger, our youngest will be 21 when we are 45 so we have plenty of time to throw money down, priority is their childhoods currently. We do have excellent public sector pensions that we have been paying into since we started working 15+ years ago though.

Around 70% at an estimated house value. It's not a comparative measure though. We are risk averse so haven't moved up when we should and have overpaid in our previous home.

WeMetByMoonlight · 02/09/2023 18:40

ust managed to pay off ours completely) However we were very luck that we managed to buy a 5 bedroom house in our mid 20s (although needed a vast amount of work doing to it) and any spare cash we've had, we have put towards paying the mortgage off. It's a big relief as DH in a very unstable job, but also have been extremely lucky

37, south east. 55% equity. Got on the housing ladder early at 26 but big mortgage compared to average

canonlyhopexo · 02/09/2023 18:48

51%. 7 years outside your age bracket though.

BlowDryRat · 02/09/2023 19:02

About 50% now.

PieonaBarm · 02/09/2023 20:25

Bought 10 years ago aged 35, with a 15% deposit. Now at 82% equity due to a kind of perfect storm of low interest rates, a bit of inheritance, house price rises and mortgage overpayment. I realise how lucky we are and absolutely sympathise with anyone trying to get on the ladder now.

roarrfeckingroar · 02/09/2023 21:16

Around 80%, flat worth £530k, I'm 35. Not norm.

LegendsBeyond · 02/09/2023 21:25

400k equity. House worth 550k.

We got on ladder a bit late (early 30s)

that's not late for London

This. I think early 30s is young to average for buying first property! We’ve just bought a house with 20% deposit, mid 30s.

FuckingHateRats · 02/09/2023 21:30

I'm 37. Have 35% equity of a £450k home.

Montydin · 02/09/2023 21:32

I’m 32, I really don’t think this thread is very representative of ‘normal’! A lot of my friends/peers/ colleagues a similar age are in their first or second step homes with 15% or 20% deposits. I find a lot of people are quite open about their struggles to get on the ladder or move to a bigger house. We are in the north where a 3 bed semi is about £300k. DH and I actually do have a lot of equity in our home but that’s due to an inheritance and we are not the norm among our friends.

spitefulandbadgrammar · 02/09/2023 21:34

We’re early 40s; I’ve got about 55% equity and DP has 5% in a £550k home – declaration of trust ringfences our respective shares.

Charcol · 08/09/2023 12:19

Mid 30s, 30% equity in the SE.

shivawn · 08/09/2023 12:57

50% completely due to the rise in house prices, we haven't overpaid at all and we're only 5.5 years into a 30 year term. We're 36 years old

We're selling at the moment and using our equity plus savings as a deposit on our new home. We'll be starting off with 34% equity when we move in there.

Dolly567 · 13/09/2023 19:49

40% @ 31

Loverofoxbowlakes · 13/09/2023 20:16

Bought at age 37, had about 45% equity (deposit from divorce proceedings). At 45 I had about 75% equity due to overpaying as much as I can afford and skyrocketing house prices. At 48 I received an unexpected inheritance and have less than £20k to pay on my mortgage, based on current local sold prices I reckon 92% equity. So glad I bought when I did, but awful for my dc who will struggle to get on the housing ladder and will be crippled by mortgage repayments when they do.

lollydu · 13/09/2023 20:17

40% age 36

roastytoastysnowballs · 13/09/2023 20:21

I'm 33 and have 63% equity

Ozziekat19 · 13/09/2023 20:42

Age 45 and have 86% equity

HamBone · 13/09/2023 20:46

I’m too old for your survey really, 48. Have about 55% equity.

thaegumathteth · 13/09/2023 20:48

About 90% of house worth approx 320k
