Hello, I'd quite like to join, but I'm overseas (France) which might make posting expensive.

Just one question - do you know what you are getting in advance?

flyingcloud · 02/11/2009 17:25

I meant posting for others, I'm happy to pay.

Great already some answers! Hey flyingcloud are you a british expat or are you french? I am a french expat in Northern Ireland! I personaly do not mind posting to france. In anycase it would be only once in 12 months!
I don't think we know what we are getting but everybody get to read the same book whch is then sent to te next person so it is one new book every month in a chain.

I'm a British expat living in France and I would love to join a book club, purleese can I join? Could send books to DH who works in the UK and then he could forward to me if it makes things cheaper.

paranormalghostygoat · 02/11/2009 18:26

Oh can I join? I love reading but have no idea about book clubs but will join up if it means I get to read more.

HC1 · 02/11/2009 18:26

Anyone else?

What do we all do now? Can you tell I'm keen to get started, I love reading.

mamandomi · 03/11/2009 18:11

well, there seem to be only 7 prsons interested... I am very democratic,so I have a few questions for you...
1 - do you want to start now (for the impatients as myself)
2- so that nobody receive a book which we have already read (that yould be a pity) shall we propose, lets say 5 books each and if some of us have already read one we can scrap it off the list AND by giving 5 possible titles we still keep the surprise for the first month.
3- is thee anything any of you would like to bann from the start for ie horror books, soapy books etc.....
4- we will need to know eachothers addresses but of course we do not want to display it on the net so if you would like to mail it to me at [email protected] I will organize the chain.
Ok, that is all for now
looking foward to hear from you all
Domi

Yes, very keen to get started too.

Will have a think about my books - I think that's a good idea - was thinking about how to avoid sending out books others have read over supper with DH's boss tonight (was switching off...)

Thanks Domi!

Maybe Walkthedinosaur could send to me as it will be cheaper for you? As I said I don't mind too much sending overseas.

walkthedinosaur · 04/11/2009 09:32

I'm impatient, I think we should start now. I don't think we should ban books because how would we find hidden gems we would never have looked at before? That's the joy of a book club isn't it? Although I would say nothing too complicated after having DC's I have a jelly brain these days.

I need to think of five books, have now realised that I only get books from library these days so need to have a think and peruse of my shelves for books I haven't read.

Will email you, just wanted to bump the thread to see if anybody else is interested in joining.

mamandomi · 04/11/2009 09:59

Great! I am quite impatient too.
here is my list of books

1 The House of Crows by Paul Doherty
2 The Savage Garden by Mark Mills
3 Friends, lovers, chocolate by Alexander McCall Smith
4 My Name is Red by Orham Pamuk
5 Chinese Cinderella by AdelinYen Mah

well here yo are, have you read any of these books?

Don't forget to mail me your details

Have a nice day!

OK have perused the book shelf and these are going to be my five:-

Coastliners - Joanne Harris
Girl with a Pearl Earring - Tracy Chevalier
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil - John Berendt
Homeland - Clare Francis

I haven't read any of your books so that's a good start.

walkthedinosaur · 04/11/2009 11:50

Oh forgot one, Haroun and the Sea of Stories - Salman Rushdie

mamandomi · 04/11/2009 12:08

ooops I have the girl with the pearl earring, loved it and I actually did like the film too. And I have also the Coastliners, I like very much the Joanne Harris books. I think it was a good idea to propose 5 books as we seem to have some in communs

OP posts:
walkthedinosaur · 04/11/2009 14:25

OK take those two out and I'll have a look and see if I've got a couple more on the shelf.

Anybody else want to join in before we get started?

flyingcloud · 04/11/2009 19:35

Here are my five - to start with, they may all have been read so far:
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Stieg Larsson
The Reader - Bernard Schlink
The Spare Room - Helen Garner
Then We Came To The End - Joshua Ferris
Ghost -Robert Harris

flyingcloud · 04/11/2009 19:37

Oh, sorry I have read Coastliners and The Girl With the Pearl Earring (loved The Girl With the Pearl Earring and can't really remember Coastliners!! I had to google it to make sure!)

mamandomi · 04/11/2009 20:19

hi there, well out of all your books I have The Reader. Not read yet but it is in my bookcase waiting for its turn. And by the way it's a deal, walkthedinosaur will send to you.
I hope the others will join in the conversation, I will send them a cat....

OP posts:
walkthedinosaur · 04/11/2009 20:38

I haven't read the Reader and would like to at some point.

Two more for me to replace the ones you've read, how about some non fiction:-

It's not about the bike - Lance Armstrong
A Hundred and One Days - Asne Seirstad
