I love reading and now that DS can entertain himself for a while trashing my lounge is 8 mo I am finally getting back into the swing of things. But I always read the same kind of books and so would love to have something different sprung on me!

Here's the basics of how it works (thank you Flamesparrow)

How it works

Postie finally arrived. My two favourite magazines but no book-choc combo. Hopefully something to look forward to tomorrow.

Itsjusta If your DH hasn't already read them I would also recommend:

The Chains of Heaven (Philip Marsden) - he travels on foot through Ethiopia.

A Passage to Africa (George Alagiah) - part autobiog/part discussion of atrocities (a strange mix but works!)

Dark Star Safari by self-opinionated twat Paul Theroux also good but I hate him too much to recommend anyone putting money in his pockets.

Itsjustafleshwound · 08/10/2009 14:24

Thanks! You have given me some amo when he next moans about his train trip me time to work!!

Read the Paul Theroux one - it was a bit odd to me that he used the real economy modes of transport through a large part of the trip and then used possibly the most luxurious and expensive train (Blue Train) in SA !!

whinegums · 08/10/2009 21:36

Stickylittlefingers, I've posted the book and choccie to you first class today, hope it arrives quickly!

aristoBLACKcat · 11/10/2009 17:59

i am struggling with this months book.

hope everyone's enjoying theirs, will post again soon.

nosferartifartu · 11/10/2009 21:02

Oh no aristoBLACKcat! I hope you manage to get into it.

No book for me yet. Flamin' posties! What's more important - their pay and working conditions and the sustainable future of the postal service or my need for chocolate literary enrichment?!

aristoBLACKcat · 11/10/2009 21:14

arti me and the book aren't doing very well ATM.

Ive got the time to read it but am not enjoying it, hoping it will get better though.

post is all over the place here too, hope your book/choc arrives soon

stickylittlefingers · 12/10/2009 15:09

whinegums book and choc arrived - thank you! I'm having a BAD bout of sleeplessness at the moment, so I finished my huge "bedbook" tome last night, so may be reading this one in the wee small hours instead. Hopefullyn will be soporific in a good way (restful!)

FlyingMonkey · 12/10/2009 17:43

I haven't started my book yet (although I have read it previously). Just finished The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters so my head is full of that. It was utterly brilliant. I also have Wolf Hall to read but will try and resist temptation and read LolaLadybird's choice first.

nosferartifartu · 13/10/2009 22:22

Hurray! Book and choc is here! The book looks like just what I need this week so I'm off to bed with it.

(FlyingMonkey - oooh, don't start me on The Little Stranger. I did not like it...I think there's a thread about it somewhere.)

Maria2007 · 14/10/2009 07:40

We read the little stranger at our book group; I think it makes an excellent book group choice (open ending & all that). I loved it too .

Arti, glad to hear book/choc finally arrived. They took their time didn't they?! Hope you like the choc... Let me know what it's like, am dying to try it but still on my bloody diet.

aristoBLACKcat · 17/10/2009 23:31

hello ladies

have finished your book muddleduck thank you

Itsjustafleshwound · 19/10/2009 16:32

I have just opened my Amazon book parcel - my DD wanted to know where the chocolate bar was hiding !!

LolaLadybird · 20/10/2009 13:49

Love the fact that there is a little group of children that thus far are growing up thinking book parcels always contain chocolate!

nosferartifartu · 21/10/2009 11:03

That's very funny, itsjustafleshwound! I think there is definitely a gap in the market!

pooter - have finished your book and will post on the thread when I can find it...

Maria2007 · 21/10/2009 22:16

Hi, just wanted to say hello to everyone...have started reading my book (Itsjusta's choice this month) & it's an easy enjoyable read so far (well enjoyable in some ways, not others, as those of you who read it will know!)

Other than that, in the last couple of weeks we've had-
--runny noses (DS)
--bad lower back pain (DP)
--gastroenteritis (DP, me, and possibly DS: he's not old enough to let us know!)
--ear infection (DS)

and as a consequence of all the above...

--sleepless nights (DS, DP & I!)

Sigh.

PistachioLemon · 23/10/2009 22:49

Hi all, a quicky post to say I'm enjoying this month's book too so far that's two out of two so I'm very impressed

Oh, and arti, thank you for the list of books for DHs, I may suggest some of those for my DH (and even read them myself as I quite liked Blood River). He's currently reading some Bernard Cornwall blood, guts and gorefest novel and has declared he wants to read more!

Maria2007 · 26/10/2009 21:41

.....Sigh.......

I'm still only 100 pages in (in my book) & about 500 more to go

It's quite an enjoyable / easy read (in a way, in another way it's very sad) but I'm not sure if I'll manage to make it until the 1st. Lets see. I hope I don't make Arti wait again (I promise I'll try not to).

...It's because I have a fierce deadline looming ahead (with university).

Anyway, just saying hi to everyone. Hope you're all enjoying your books.

nosferartifartu · 27/10/2009 13:03

Maria hope you and your boys are better. DS has had a chronic cough, an ear infection and today a reaction to penicillin (not a bad one, fortunately, it's a family thing!) so lots of disturbance here too. Don't worry about the book, I've just started a new one so there's no hurry. Perhaps you could send the chocolate on ahead though.

Hope everyone is enjoying their book this month. Don't forget to post on the threads - no-one's posted on mine for a while and I'm starting to get paranoid!

aristoBLACKcat · 29/10/2009 11:26

morning all.................

get well wishes to arti ds & maria and anyone else who is poorly atm.

dysgu i have posted to you yesterday so expect your parcel soon. the post is quite erratic because of the strikes last week - must be a big backlog somewhere.

also we have done our pumpkin today and DCs are happy with it.

whispers

nosferartifartu · 30/10/2009 09:21

aristo - I will be posting either tomorrow or Monday.

Re: Xmas shopping - I have started telling everyone what I want - does that count?!

PistachioLemon · 31/10/2009 09:32

Morning all... no Christmas shopping has been done in the PL household yet. Every year I say I'll start it earlier and every year I let myself down! Maybe I'm a man at heart as I do quite like getting it all done in one day

By the way, Arti, am I supposed to be posting my book and chocolate to someone now?

aristoBLACKcat · 31/10/2009 15:30

happy Halloween everyone

Ladybee how was the wedding?
have you got some pictures to share, we would love to see & congratulations btw

PL you will post to the same address as before

Dysgu · 31/10/2009 17:28

Hello all.

aristo my book arrived yesterday. Was too big to fit through the letter box so I had a card from the mailman. Had no idea what it might be - lost track of time this month - so was a wonderful surprise. I have yet to start the boo but DD1 and I have already managed to work our way through half the chocolate! YUMMY!

Thank you for posting early - as it reminded me to post mine. PistachioLemon I have mailed your next book and chocolate today - although island mail have joined the strike so not sure when it will reach you.

Must post on the relevant thread too...

And must catch up with all that has been happening here...

aristoBLACKcat · 31/10/2009 19:39

dysgu me and DCs had eaten a choc orange last week and i had an idea that you would also love it .
however when it came to posting it wasnt such a good idea!

sorry you had to collect - post is still getting through ok despite the strikes.

looking forward to the next one

Itsjustafleshwound · 01/11/2009 17:14

Pooter - I went to the PO on Saturday, so hopefully, you will get your parcel soon...

We unfortunately have a birthday before the joy of Christmas, so it is a double whammy of shopping mayhem for us !!
