Anyone want to start a new club with me?

Hi,
I'm new to MN, but I love to read. I'm an English teacher, and really like discovering new books that I wouldn't have found by myself. I'm expecting my second baby in February and am not looking forward to the prospect of being away from discussions about books for a whole year... a little sad I know. Grin

Looking at the other threads on here, it looks like you all have lots of fun reading and sharing your thoughts on the books. However, since I can't seem to see any groups that are currently looking for new members I thought I would bite the bullet and start a new one!

Anyone interested, please let me know!

Hello. I would like to join. I am having my second baby in January and am a very enthusiastic reader when time allows (which I suspect will be even less with two...)
I've not much idea how this works though. Are you any wiser?

irishqueen · 22/11/2010 11:01

Hi, I'm also due march 3rd.... seem to have inadvertantly started an antenatal book group.
Count me in ... again not sure where to start lol

Toni2011 · 22/11/2010 21:21

Hi, I'm really glad to hear from you! As I said above, I am new to MN too. However, I spent a little while looking at some of the older threads, and it seems to work like this:

  1. We get 12 members to join our group
  2. We each select a book (possibly excluding unpopular genres such as horror, sci-fi or chicklit, depending on what the group members like to read)
  3. We create a shared list of addresses for the members
  4. When we have finished reading a book we post our thoughts on it on a message thread
  5. Each month we post a book to the next person on the list until we have all read each one

For now, we have to wait patiently until 9 more people express an interest in joining up. Whilst we are waiting, what sort of books do you enjoy reading?

I have read some really interesting books recently, such as 'The secret life of bees', 'The reader', 'Revolutionary road', 'The great Gatsby' and 'Atonement'. I also usually have a slightly lighter read going at the same time - often vampire romance, or something by Terry Prachett.

Hi, I would love to join too. Now that my 2 dc are a bit older I have found a bit more time on my hands! ie reading more than just recipe books!
My most recent popular read was the Stieg Larsson millenium trilogy (which I finished in a week) and have recently been exposed to the joys of Agatha Christie! Otherwise I go through periods of reading sci-fi/fantasy/chick lit/classics. I am open to reading any other books that others have read and loved but probably would prefer not to read that genre of abusive childhood memoirs.

Scaltini · 29/11/2010 09:09

Hi, I would love to join, am positively greedy when it comes to reading!
I am expecting my first baby in three weeks, so currently hibernating with the cats and reading a lot. Stand out reads for me in the last month include; The Room, Jump (Jilly's latest - love a bit of trash), Lord of the Flies (Didn't enjoy it, but memorable). Currently reading The Scandal of the Season.
I think one of my most read books is Gone with the Wind, and the ghost-written sequel also.
Generally very open to genres, I am enjoying Russian influenced fiction at the moment, particularly Kate Furnival's books. I agree re no abusive memoirs, very depressing.

We have also removed childhood memoirs from the genres we would like to share.

Does anyone have any other genres they would rather not be asked to read?

I hope everything goes well for you, Only Smile

DiscoTex · 30/11/2010 21:09

Hi Toni,

Just to let you know I have namechanged - was Scaltini - now DiscoTex.

:)

Toni2011 · 30/11/2010 22:25

Welcome to the group Fuchzia!
Thanks for letting us know DiscoTex.

Well, that makes us up to 7. We just need 5 more members and we can get started.

In the mean time, can anyone suggest a name for our group? (Not just for something fun to do, but also so that we can identify our threads more easily).

Smile

I think I have got everyone's new nicknames, but if anyone sees a mistake please say so - I'm seriously suffering from baby brain this month!

The next step is to collect addresses for everyone so that we can post the books around, and for everyone to choose a book to share.

If you could all post with the title of a book you are happy to post off to someone then we can see if there are any problems or doubles. Looking back at our previous comments, it seems like the only genre that is off the list is abusive childhood memoirs. Anything else looks ok.

As for the addresses, if you would all like to email me your address, I will send one to everyone on the list. That way we only need keep track of one other person and send to them each month.

I hope everyone has a really great Christmas and that none of you are having snow trouble. I'm a little stir crazy at being stuck inside but DD1 is having a whale of a time building an igloo (or trying to at least!).

Toni

Me, me, can I join up please?

Toni2011 · 19/12/2010 19:27

Welcome to the group chocohohoholic!

Hooray! We now have the 12 members required and can get started!

Please can everyone email me with their address and we can send our books out. If everyone does this soon, it is possible we can start reading as soon as the Christmas chaos has passed.

Just realised that I didn't give you my email in the last message - sorry, I did say I was suffering from baby brain!

Email me at [email protected].

Don't forget to post the title of the book you want to send.
