4th missed miscarriage?

ttcworriedmum93 · 18/04/2025 16:15

Hi all, firstly I’m sorry for the long post I am really hoping someone can help shed some light or meet anyone who has been in a similar situation.

I have had 3 missed miscarriages (2 in the last yaar) and am currently 4 weeks pregnant but not holding out much hope.

we have been ttc for 2.5 years. We have had 3 missed miscarriages presenting with the exact same story every time. Everything fine tests progressing, bar a bit of spotting here and there and a (dry stuck like sensation up there?!) and a lack of normal pregnancy symptoms each time. We get to the 6 week scan and there is nothing there, no usual sac no yolk and certainly no baby. Each time has shown a very mishapen sac or the last time just a thickened uterine lining. It is baffling everyone. I might add my levels are 15’000-19’000 hcg by this point and still rising. They were so concerned about the lack of anything and the high levels last time they did the ectopic surgery but it turned out to be nothing there. All 3 have ended in SMOM surgery as they don’t come away by themselves and my body still goes on as if it’s pregnant. I am just expecting the exact same thing to happen again in 2 weeks when we go for a scan just to be told ‘sorry we can’t see anything’ and I am so disheartened and frustrated.

I have been under the reccurent miscarriage clinic (NHS) they have sent the tissue off (the last 2 times) which has come back with no genetic abnormality, the last time nothing came back (was only November and think it takes a good few months?) I have had every blood test going both nhs and with a private clinic I.e lupus anticoagulant, thoromphollia, karotyping, thyroid etc all back normal. I have had a private scan - all normal and amh blood test which was also normal. I’m at the point I want them to spot something off so we can fix it. The only other query was with the GP a couple of years ago when I was (and still do) get quite classic endometriosis symptoms (heavy periods, dragging pain from belly button etc etc but decided not to take this further due to the tests being invasive when ttc.

the last pregnancy (in November) I was given high dose folic acid and progesterone to start when I fell pregnant, it didn’t help and ended in the same result. I must add I was diagnosed last year with sarcoidosis (which is an auto immune condition) and this time I have been given steroids (predisolone 25mg) to take daily when I fall pregnant as that was the only other idea the consultant had for this time (it could be that I am rejecting the baby with the auto immune condition?). I am also taking baby aspirin (on the advice on the private dr we saw for a consultation) and high dose vitamin d.

I suppose my question is has anyone else suffered anything so peculiar like this? We don’t ever get past the 6 week scan and I am wondering when and whether to give up. I do pray this time is different but with the lack of pregnancy symptoms I’m not so sure, but I am taking the steroids religiously none the less!

just to add I have 2 previous children from an ex husband 11 and 10 years old although sadly first born died when a baby. So I know I can be pregnant and carry pregnancies (albeit a decade ago!) I have my partner of 4 years now and I am worried in some way we are incompatible if that’s even a thing?! His sperm is better than average so we know it isn’t that too. I am 31 and he is 42.

if you have got this far thank you for reading and I really hope someone out there has been in a similar situation and I’m not the only one!!

Many thanks,

Sorry I meant to add to this thread the other day. Sorry for all the losses you’ve suffered.

I know you said you’ve had everything checked including Thyroid function but may I suggest getting a more thorough thyroid test perhaps privately, because the NHS only tests TSH and the range is quite lax.

I would want to test:

  • Thyroglobulin antibodies
  • Thyroid peroxidase antibodies
  • Free thyroxine
  • Free T3
  • TSH (the only one they do on NHS)

Many women have Hashimoto’s and it can be responsible for infertility. I am in the process of being checked for this myself. I have all of the physical symptoms but my NHS tests are sub-clinical so I will be getting tested privately. Your thyroid antibodies can be out of whack for 15 years before their impact will start showing up in TSH levels.

I agree, so much empathy on here. I am not too bad. Very tired at the moment. 10 doo today. No symptoms but I'm on pred so not expecting any. Not sure when I'll test though. Previous to the last three months I was on pred from a positive test so I had to test early as I was to start the pred at first sign of a second line but now I have to take it from ovulation anyway i dont need to know so early . I have cyclogest to take too, if i get a positive, just as a precaution. I am just hoping I'm not allergic to it as i am allergic to quite a lot of things. I will be very shocked if i get a positive when i do test. I suspect the tiredness is down to mid luteal progesterone and it will likely start to drop soon.
Cycle 6 after my last chemical loss. Typical for it to be taking a while when I now have to be on and off the steroids all the time :(,
Still, we have to keep going dont we x

@Objectiontime hopefully u will get ur BFP this month!!! I am waiting for my period and will go again…as u said we just need to keep going! Xxx

ttcworriedmum93 · 30/04/2025 22:05

Thank you for this, I will certainly look into it.. may I ask what the symptoms are? X

Here are some of the main symptoms:

  • Fatigue and sluggishness
  • Increased sensitivity to cold
  • Increased sleepiness
  • Dry skin
  • Constipation
  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle aches, tenderness and stiffness
  • Joint pain and stiffness
  • Irregular or excessive menstrual bleeding
  • Depression
  • Problems with memory or concentration
  • Swelling of the thyroid (goiter)
  • A puffy face
  • Brittle nails
  • Hair loss
  • Enlargement of the tongue

I also have bradycardia which is a slower than normal heart rate (I am not physically fit at all to account for it).

MyDiamondShoesAreTooBig · 30/04/2025 22:47

Just to add you may not have all of the symptoms, for example, I don’t have a goiter or a puffy face and I did manage to conceive; but I have everything else and can trace symptoms back about 25 years. Anyway, worth getting all your thyroid biomarkers tested if you can so you can rule it out. I read lately that some doctors think up to 1 in 5 women suffer from it.

Thank you @MyDiamondShoesAreTooBig that’s really helpful and I will add it to my list! X

Hi all just thought I’d update you it’s not great news. I had the results of the hcg bloods over 48 hours today:
7033 :11.30 am Wednesday
7774 : 9.00 am today
absolutely gutted - I had turned a bit more confident for this one too after seeing what could have been the start of a pregnancy on the scan on Wednesday. I just don’t know what to do anymore. Going back for more bloods on Sunday and then they will call me Tuesday with results and a plan so I guess I am just left to grieve until then! 😞. Wish someone could tell me what was happening each time. Xx

urgh I’m so sorry to read this. I’ve been following the thread as I’m going through my 2nd mc, im so so sorry this has happened to you again. I hope you have good support while you grieve and wait for more results.

Lalalala77 · 02/05/2025 20:22

I’m so sorry you’re going through this @ttcworriedmum93 . It’s awful to have the hope each time - I haven’t had exactly the same but I’ve had 4 miscarriages, the most recent a couple of weeks ago. I’ve seen a heartbeat each time at 6 weeks, 3 have gone by the 8 weeks scan and one progressed passed 8 the week scan but gone by 10. I also don’t have any answers so totally understand the frustrations at not knowing what is happening or where to turn next.
I have a blood clotting disorder so was on blood thinning injections and aspirin for the last one which also didn’t work.
Im sorry I don’t have any advice but I just wanted to share my story so you didn’t feel so alone in this because it can feel lonely as hell!
If you need to rant away please do, hopefully we can all get through this together and get some answers!

Ohh no, I'm so sorry to hear this. My HCG failed to double between 4 and five of my second chemical. I had to go to the EPU every two days to get it checked. It actually only started at 96 and it was heartbreaking.
Just make sure they rescan you in case it is a lost twin that has caused the drop. It does happen. Just so sorry though. Sending hugs x

Thank you, so sorry for your losses. It’s so hard with no answers isn’t it. I am just thrown a different medication each time and told to try that but all the tests are coming back normal and nothing ever seems to help. I said to my partner tonight I just don’t think I can keep doing this physically and mentally anymore. X

Thank you, I think the consultant will probably scan me at some point next week to confirm the miscarriage (that’s what usually happens) would be lovely to have some sort of miracle though. Just hoping it isn’t ectopic.. they saw what they thought was the start of a sac though so I’m hoping that’s unlikely.. I really don’t want the laparoscopy surgery again. I’ll attach a pic if I can x

It's hard isn't it. One thing I will say, not that I want to give you false home is that I have read that HCG doubling can take three days rather than two sometimes and its obvious what they can see on the scan so I am absolutely keeping my fingers crossed that this works out well for you x

Lalalala77 · 03/05/2025 00:08

Honestly I’m the same in not knowing if I can take anymore emotionally and physically so I get it but I also think it’s really hard to make a decision like that when you’re in the thick of it.
I don’t think all hope is lost with your scan yet as it’s so early so I’m really crossing all my fingers and toes for you that it works out but it’s just such a shit thing to go through, particularly with all the uncertainty.

Either way we are here to listen - I just hate that everyone here has the joy of pregnancy robbed from them, it should be such a different time and again I’m so sorry you’re going through this.

ttcworriedmum93 · 04/05/2025 19:16

Hi all, another update I went in for more bloods this morning and they have gone up to 12,600. The dr on duty called me up this evening and wants to admit me to hospital tonight incase of ectopic. So the levels have gone up quite a bit (they kept rising slowly with previous losses). I’m guessing they don’t think there is any chance of a viable pregnancy (they said with the levels that high they should have been able to see more on a scan). I am on the same ward in the same room as my last loss in November so all feels very Deja vu. X

@ttcworriedmum93 ohh, I hoping that with the doubling of your levels that might be good news and they might see something more on your scan than they have done. I am really hoping so. Thinking of you and hoping things go better than you are thinking.
14 doo for me today. Spotting g this morning, which is pretty unusual for me but expect AF tomorrow.
Let us know how you get in x

Thank you hun, sadly not my month. Cycle 7 now commenced :(

Sorry to read this :( . I have now been discharged from hospital after another consultant doesn’t think it’s an ectopic he thinks it’s a collapsed sac, however he said ‘I’ve been wrong before and I’m sorry if I’m wrong again’ I must have had about 5 different opinions now. No one to scan me at hospital today apparently so have just been sent home and left ‘will try and get me on rapid access clinic tomorrow’ if not a scan for Wednesday. The night consultant told me last night my levels are way too high for any other management other than surgery but yet I have just been left. I think I will just head to the epau in the morning and hope that someone somewhere can help me as they all know me now. X
