Farting my way through my 50's

WTAF? I'd leave me if I was married to myself- I started farting early menopause and 4 years on, am still bloody farting like an old dog. Loud, unexpected and deeply embarrassing. Drink lots of fluids, eat well and exercise. HRT has made no difference. Anyone else had this - and PLEASE throw suggestions at me!

No solution, just posting in solidarity. I'm gluten free and have IBD. Like you, the menopause has made me far, far worse. I do think it's partly sphincter related but the IBD isn't helping.

I don't mean to sound disgusting but does anyone else have horrendous smelling farts too? Mine could really peel the wall paper off and I don't know why they are like that. DH can fart and it there is no smell at all.

Absolutely foul. Seriously! I could clear a room.

ArcticSkewer · 04/01/2023 09:47

Could be gallbladder problems

FFF: fat, fair headed, forties is how medics used to remember the typical profile of someone with gallstones

Bepis · 04/01/2023 09:47

@Abouttimemum Me too! 😂 some days are worse than others but I even make myself want to leave the room haha

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 04/01/2023 09:48

A good bottle of wine (either colour), and use the cork judiciously. 😬

over50andfab · 04/01/2023 09:51

Gut and bowel problems can change in menopause. There might be something in this article to help and maybe try different probiotics like kefir balance-menopause.com/uploads/2021/09/Bloating-and-bowel-problems-in-the-menopause.pdf

DuncanBiscuits · 04/01/2023 10:01

Gluten free and on HRT here, and I spend my days doing a passable imitation of a foghorn.

My DH didn’t hear me fart once for the first five years of our relationship. I’ve made up for it over the last couple, and the healthier I eat, the worse it gets, annoyingly.

One thing that does seem to be helping is taking a daily probiotic. I take MoodProbio.

BarkAscending · 04/01/2023 10:06

Do the exercises pp linked to. Try the FODMAP diet as a way to try to ascertain what foods may be causing a problem for you. Lots of fruit and veg is maybe not the best if you are trying to reduce wind production.

Age related lactose intolerance? We produce less of the enzyme needed to digest lactose as we get older.

Memam · 04/01/2023 10:09

Try drinking lactose-free milk and (obviously) avoid food that makes you fart: beans, onions, broccoli and cruciferous veggies.

Am going to get some today.

What do we do with charcoal please? Asking for a friend, honest :)

Abouttimemum · 04/01/2023 10:10

I once read somewhere - kids are like farts: you like your own but not anyone else’s.

I think I like other people’s kids more than I like my farts 🤣

talkingmorenonsense · 04/01/2023 10:11

I cut out lactose and it’s a miracle.

CrumbsInMyBralette · 04/01/2023 10:18

I've been lactose free for decades and am now a farty pants aged 50 so it's not that!

Spanielsarepainless · 04/01/2023 10:40

This happened to me and they were evil. Explained to pharmacist in Superdrug (him suppressing laughter) and he recommended charcoal tablets, which worked. Poo went black for the duration. Parsley tablets can work too.

JackieQueen · 04/01/2023 11:47

You think it's bad in your 50s, you ain't seen nothin' yet, wait till you get to your 60s!! 😂😂🎺

Puppypads · 04/01/2023 11:55

I'm 48. Decided to start having healthy breakfasts of overnight oats a few months ago. Dear God the farts were unbelievable. So oats (and bread, to a lesser extent) are a major culprit for me. What is your breakfast like? Maybe try eggs etc?

FictionalCharacter · 04/01/2023 12:18

IBS made me like this. It’s much better when I avoid all the trigger foods. It took a trip to a registered dietician to get diagnosed and work out what I should and should not eat.
Thank you for that link @Nightmanagerfan I definitely have that problem too.

Great 😂. I'm 39 and it's bad enough!

Flipthefrugal · 04/01/2023 12:27

What type of HRT are you on Op?
I've just changed to patches as the oral progesterone tablets were horrendous.
Constant gurgling stomach, bloating and pooing several times a day.

ShippingNews · 04/01/2023 09:18

Charcoal is your friend - try it.

Tablets?

CaroleFuckingBaskin · 04/01/2023 23:54

Absolutely fucking dying at this thread 🤣

MontyK · 04/01/2023 23:57

Grin at farting like an old dog!!

I never used to fart, like ever. I've noticed a steep change recently and I'm quite enjoying it. Let it all billow out I say.

been and done it. · 04/01/2023 23:58

Definitely don't start taking steroids either....talk about corkscrews....
