Farting my way through my 50's

WTAF? I'd leave me if I was married to myself- I started farting early menopause and 4 years on, am still bloody farting like an old dog. Loud, unexpected and deeply embarrassing. Drink lots of fluids, eat well and exercise. HRT has made no difference. Anyone else had this - and PLEASE throw suggestions at me!

Lactose free milk, gluten free pasta, caffeine free, all helps so much. Avoid broccoli, cauliflower. Soda. Wine as much as you can.

My gut is explosive otherwise 🙈

ItsMeHiImTheProblem · 05/01/2023 00:39

Definitely try gluten free, if that doesn't work try lactose free. If that's still doesn't work cut out carbs.

PyongyangKipperbang · 05/01/2023 00:40

In Church or Chapel
LEt it rattle!

My mother has IBS and my sister and I have always had to be careful with certain things, any onion that isnt cooked to within an millimetre of charcoal sets me off. I can clear the street. But since being menopausal it has definitely got worse. I do wonder if it is connected to Lactose though. I drink a lot of milk based coffee as a way to keep my blood sugar stable (eating disorder) and I notice it is worse when I am at work and have more. I may switch out to a plant based milk but I havent found one yet that tastes anything like normal milk. I have very sensitive taste, again due to the eating disorder, and drink skimmed milk. Any suggestions?

ItsMeHiImTheProblem · 05/01/2023 01:19

Have you tried lactose free milk? I buy lactofree and it doesn't taste any different to normal milk to me. If I had to choose a plant based one I'd go for oat milk.

PyongyangKipperbang · 05/01/2023 01:37

@ItsMeHiImTheProblem I will try lactofree....thank you!

PyongyangKipperbang · 05/01/2023 01:38

Although logically......it may not work as the lacto bit is what keeps my blood sugar stable, so I may not have thought this through Grin

alpenguin · 05/01/2023 02:08

It was pregnancy that started it for me. I lived with my ex 10 years and not once did I fart in his presence (not by design) in that time. Met my current partner, got pregnant and it’s gone downhill (or upwind from there)

my special skill is farting on each step on stairs, especially when someone is behind me.

I actually think perimenopause has helped calm it down in many respects but they’re harder to hold in now. Thankfully they never smell but my dogs interest in my trouser trumpets may suggest otherwise

Absolutely fucking dying at this thread 🤣

Me too 😂😂 although I have tried to compose myself haha

pompomdaisy · 05/01/2023 02:16

I've started taking turmeric tablets and find it helps a little. Also using more oat milk. Don't like it in drinks but it's great when I'm replacing ordinary milk in recipes.

CaroleFuckingBaskin · 05/01/2023 12:01

I've been on turmeric for years. That brings its own worries if you take too much in the early days. Farting will be the least of your worries 😟 😄

DuncanBiscuits · 05/01/2023 12:14

Well, this morning I was out for a jog when the inevitable happened, prompting my neighbour who I hadn’t seen to reply to my fart with a cheery, ‘Morning!’ 😳

I’m going to have to move house.

CaroleFuckingBaskin · 05/01/2023 12:15

@DuncanBiscuits 😀😀😀

DuncanBiscuits · 05/01/2023 12:27

Whatever else happens, whatever else I achieve, I’m going to be ‘That woman from Number 6 who farts.’

Dahlia444 · 05/01/2023 12:42

I'm peri and haven't noticed a particular worsening of farts but only came on to say that listening to everyone's advice for things that work for them (e.g. cut out lactose, gluten etc) is extremely specific to that person. After years of misery with IBS-D and bloating I have been transformed after a year of painstaking exclusion diet (fodmap diet) but my combination of triggers is entirely specific to me. So you need to find what (if it's dietary because it might not be!) are your triggers. Good luck! And thanks for the entertaining thread 😂

Remona · 05/01/2023 12:52

I can offer no solution but I’m happy to know I’m not alone.

I have always been windy and it’s not helped now by the fact that I’m vegetarian and I have bile acid malabsorption. However, I have absolutely noticed it has worsened since peri. I fart when I get out of bed, fart when I get out of a chair and fart every time I bend over. Sometimes I can do several in quick succession.

It’s awful if I’ve been sat for a long time such as when on a plane or train. I’m in agony when I stand up then I’m farting for Britain until I’ve got rid of all the trapped wind 😩

F4chrissakes · 05/01/2023 14:21

To save embarrassment, I second pelvic floor exercises, they do give some element of control. But holding on to wind can be painful, and I daresay not good for you either. So you should let rip when out of others' earshot.
If you are a windy person, I'd avoid public yoga classes for sure.
Me, I practice at home, and merrily toot away......Smile

C1N1C · 05/01/2023 14:24

As a husband, I'd actually not be too bothered... this sounds like a decent 'get out of jail free card'!

"Why are the dishes not done?!"
..."Hey!... I put up with your farting!"

It's a lighthearted way of allowing a few indiscretions to slip 😀

Goodread1 · 03/04/2023 03:39

@Itisbetter

I am really intrigued as I suffer terribly with achy joints with OestoAthritis,

What did you do last Easter, that made such a difference then?
As I can see a typo mistake on your post,

And I would love to find out what it is to gain a bit more /or somwhat blessed relief from the agony pain of Oestro Athritis

I be quite happy welcome for any advice thanks

JauntyRedShoes · 03/04/2023 04:04

I take a daily probiotic and have cut down on bread. After experiencing IBS, seemingly out of nowhere, I now avoid onion, leeks and other alliums. This seems to have stopped the farting when standing up, bending down etc. I was getting extremely anxious about yoga classes and still get twitchy in personal training sessions. As a teenager I used to cringe at my mum’s random wind surprises. She used to drag me to twice weekly mass and would nod off in the sermon. Once she farted loudly, woke herself up and stood up with a sincere ‘Amen’. She was unfazed as I was dying inside making deals with various gods and devils to address the problem. Her response to my embarrassment was ‘wherever you be let the wind go free’.

Ownedbykitties · 23/01/2024 23:04

Maybe it's the dairy? Milk and milk products are hard on adults digestion.

Squiggles23 · 23/01/2024 23:14

For anyone self conscious about the smell these might be worth a try:

I have only used twice but think they did work! Can’t help with the noise though…

Try cutting out carbonated drinks if you haven’t?

Danfromdownunder · 23/01/2024 23:35

Thank god it’s not just me. Sometimes I wiggle to the loos at work panicking it’s going to come out. Or when I cough I’ll blast out the other end too and I’m certain people suspect something. They don’t smell thank god but they’re so forceful they could rip a hole denim I swear it.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 23/01/2024 23:37

For me I tend to be fartier when I have an empty stomach. Particularly, for some reason, if I eat mints on an empty stomach. So perhaps eating little and often might help?

cerisepanther73 · 25/01/2024 22:13

L.o.l
Nothing wrong with it

I think 🤔 i am doing the same thing too

Bionicnose · 30/10/2025 23:49
