What age where you when you started the menopause

I am asking out of curiosity really following on from another post around this subject I have just been reading. I am 42 and have started getting awful headaches, hair lose and times where I am extremely hot and sweaty.

I feel 42 is a bit young for the menopause but maybe I am wrong?

I'm 43, been having peri symptoms for over a year now!

Always4Brenner · 26/09/2022 14:00

Symptoms started at about 43 onwards then 13 years of hell only just coming out of it no periods now for six months and hot flushes though still much better than in the summer which were horrific.

FunnysInLaJardin · 26/09/2022 14:04

50, in fact I had the peri blood test the day before my 50th. What a way to celebrate!

Dragonskin · 26/09/2022 14:16

I've read that perimenopause symptoms can start as early as 35, so it seems reasonable that at 42 you could be starting to get symptoms

KangarooKenny · 26/09/2022 14:17

You’re not too young.
‘I lost some hair in my early 40’s and it never grew back.

55

littlemissdizzy00 · 26/09/2022 15:34

Thank you all, did you get blood test to have perimenopause confirmed?

Gosh it is all making me feel so old!

KangarooKenny · 26/09/2022 15:39

No, just went on symptoms.

Vapeyvapevape · 26/09/2022 15:40

I don't know what age I was , it just sort of crept up on me .

Mooserp · 26/09/2022 15:49

I agree, it just creeps up on you. I couldn't tell you when it started. I wasn't feeling great one day then terrible the next.
I became aware of it around 49, but I had problems with hair loss and some other things many years before that. Don't know if they were menopause related though.

borninastorm · 26/09/2022 16:28

I was 35 when peri menopause started and post menopausal by 45.

whiteroseredrose · 26/09/2022 16:31

Mid 40s I think. I have a Mirena so haven't had periods for years, but I kept forgetting things - and overheating!

A blood test at 50 said that I was post menopausal.

megletthesecond · 26/09/2022 16:33

Symptoms started at 40. I'd had a partial hysterectomy a few years before which possibly triggered it. 48 now and feel like the worst is over.

BillHadersLeftEye · 26/09/2022 16:34

In peri by 32.

Flamingle18 · 26/09/2022 16:36

Symptoms started at 37 but dismissed it as other things. This year (age 39) I got put on hrt patches and progesterone. I had blood tests and a scan to rule out polycystic ovaries.

TwocksAway · 26/09/2022 16:36

headaches, hair lose and times where I am extremely hot and sweaty.

This can also be thyroid related, however I actually was 42 when I started peri.

NormalNans · 26/09/2022 16:39

Why does my GP keep telling me there’s no blood test for perimenopause and it’s a process of elimination? I know that’s not what this thread is about but I’m confused by the fact that you’ve all had blood tests and I can’t get one

BeyondMyWits · 26/09/2022 16:40

56 when peri started, 58 menopausal (no periods for a year - this July). Not suitable for hrt (heart attack) so suffering with the sweats and joint aches mainly. Though brain fog and irritability are getting me a bit fed up too.

Youaremysunshine14 · 26/09/2022 16:43

I reckon I was in peri at 44. Full blown symptoms about two to three years later. Now nearly 51 and so grateful for going on HRT at 48!

Crikeyalmighty · 26/09/2022 16:43

Likes previous poster was on mirena so didn't have periods anyway , symptoms started at 47 and carried on in varying degrees till around 55 (now 60)

Disneygirl37 · 26/09/2022 16:44

43 peri menopausal. Joints aching, brain fog and occasional hot flush. Ive my gp for hrt 3 times now! She keeps saying she will review it in a few months!

How old are you?

Apparently blood tests for Peri can be quite unreliable so they just go from symptoms if you are over 45, but may do blood tests if you are under that (as long as you aren't on any hormonal contraception)

onmywayamarillo · 26/09/2022 16:48

52 and first month of no period 😀

Looking back it's been about 4/5 years of peri

No huge symptoms just a bit warmer at night and no longer freezing cold in the day. Oh and no more spots just the odd tash hair
