I am asking out of curiosity really following on from another post around this subject I have just been reading. I am 42 and have started getting awful headaches, hair lose and times where I am extremely hot and sweaty.

I feel 42 is a bit young for the menopause but maybe I am wrong?

I'm 53. I haven't had a period for 3 years now, but I haven't had any symptoms either.
Do you think that means I'm through it?

Possibly, for me the insomnia, joint pain and memory /cognitive issues really kicked in post menopause, and I went on HRT i thonk 6 yrs after last period because i was miserable and actually losing the able to function.
As a pp said above one thing to be aware of is the loss of bone density due to lack of oestrogen. There will be no symptoms of osteoporosis or osteopenia until you break bones in simole falls and its too late then. A regular dexa scan is the only way to know if theres an issue

moominda · 29/09/2022 21:19

I started at almost 16 and I do think I was still growing till around 17/18.

But I was always tiny so basically caught up with everyone!

I think I began peri in late 30s and may be finishing at the moment. Hard to tell as I started hrt while having periods but they'd gone v light and I had loads of symptoms. So I've been on a cyclical regime since but they went v v light again in the summer.

moominda · 29/09/2022 21:19

At the moment being 45 Grin

user6497219 · 29/09/2022 21:23

Mid 40s, DM was about 60 so I didn't take after her

J0y · 30/09/2022 07:46

I'm early 50s and haven't had bad symptoms, sometimes women in their late 50s and even 60s make comments about menopause and im so confused, how could it go on that long?

adriftabroad · 30/09/2022 09:58

It is a permanent state (post menopause), until you die! (I thought) It does not just end. I plan to take HRT until there is a reason not to.

As several have said, symptoms get worse the longer after the day menopause starts you are... I was fine for 3 years, 52 now and upping the HRT.

shipwreckedonhighseas · 30/09/2022 16:02

Don't be ridiculous. You don't see elderly ladies getting hot flushes etc. Definitely not a permanent state!

adriftabroad · 01/10/2022 12:14

It is and you do.

a Mayo Clinic study found that many women experience hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, mood changes and other menopause symptoms beyond mid-life and into their 60s, 70s and even their 80s.

Dozens of sorces online. Not ridiculous at all. It is a permanent state.

What does this mean? Are there some words muddled?

My understanding is that symptoms are experienced for some years prior to menopause and then gradually decline in the few years following.
I imagine that is the experience for the majority of women, with a significant number experiencing symptoms for many years before and after.

adriftabroad · 04/10/2022 14:41

I mean it varies for everyone. The first few years right after menopause occurs and you eneter post menopause, some people feel fine then a few years down the line the decline in oestrogen really makes itself known. For some this doesnt happen at all.

People should and need to do their own research. Absolutely everyone is different.

But make no mistake, post menopause is a permanent state. It doesnt go away.

People seem so touchy about this. We are only fertile for about 1/3 of our lives.

Thats good to hear, Looks I’m going to live to be well over 100.

adriftabroad · 04/10/2022 15:15

😯I could have probably had a baby from 15 to 45 tops. Average age of life around 85 on a good day?!

I make that a 1/3 of my life I was fertile and able to carry a child to term.

But my maths is shit!

I don't think people are failing to understand that after menopause they are post-menoapausal, but surprised that symptoms persist for so long.

SheWoreYellow · 04/10/2022 17:25

Googling would suggest that menopausal symptoms last around four years.

Is that not right? I am confused.

Peri around 43 , post ( last period ) at 47. Had kids in late 30's ( naturally ), was on HRT for under a year, hated it and weaned myself off.

Well no, because the parts of your body affected by lack of hormones are losing or entirely without those hormones for decades, so to have just 4 yrs experiencing symptoms like insomnia, hot flushes, emotional disturbances, tinnitus, joint pain, anxiety, depression, brain fog, memory issues etc etc would be unusual.
Anyone that works in nursing homes or geriatric care wound be aware of elderly woman experiencing hot flushes, vaginal atrophy, anxiety, insomnia etc.

Not true. I work with three women who are all decades into menopause and still have some symptoms inc hot flushes.

Cozzadelsol · 15/12/2022 20:10

Probably about 45, but suffered for a couple of years before going to the docs and getting hormone tests.

I was then prescribed HRT (Femostone) and Vit D that have really helped my horrible symptoms, I no longer have the night sweats and hot flushes, brain fog, that were so debilitating.

I still feel like I'm going through another life transition, particularly around body shape, skin, hair, mood.

I do think that researching how to deal with this has helped a lot. I don't run miles no more, as this can adversely affect your joints, I prefer light weights and aerobic exercises.

Intermittent fasting has helped, cutting down on carbs and upping my protein intake particularly soy products.

You need to be your own best advocate when it comes to your menopausal health. I think of it as, if it were one of my children, would I just be fobbed off, if they were suffering....hell no!! So don't stand for any BS.

Good luck my dear, its tough, but you can get there x

romany4 · 17/12/2022 14:48

Peri started at 44.
Now 50 and last period was nearly 4 months ago. Don't have hot flushes or night sweats..
Feel I'm doing fine

SuperGinger · 27/12/2022 09:02

I'm 46 and think I'm probably peri because I'm always hot and get very sweaty at night but I'm still on Yasmin, oral contraceptives, and I have avoided having my period for years because I'm very squeamish about blood. I'm also on citalopram which I suspect I don't need but it's hard to come off it, also recently found out I'm ADHD which has been a revelation in a good way. Anyone else still on oral contraceptives at the time of peri?

I remember my own mother going through menopause, around 51. We went sailing when she had her last period and she had no tampons and asked me if she could borrow mine, Tampax mini, poor woman. She also used to have the air con on max in her car forba goodbfew years before and we always had to wear extra jumpers when we got in there. Does maternal age have any correlation to menopause.
