I am asking out of curiosity really following on from another post around this subject I have just been reading. I am 42 and have started getting awful headaches, hair lose and times where I am extremely hot and sweaty.

I feel 42 is a bit young for the menopause but maybe I am wrong?

Peri started with a bang at 49 and then I had 10 years of hell until a young, female locum GP told me I was mad not to take hrt which I then started.

Periods didn't stop completely until I was was 60.☹️

Still take hrt and intend to forever! (Have tried to come off it 3 times and each time, even after reducing gradually over months, the damned awful symptoms return)

BigWoollyJumpers · 26/09/2022 16:53

Probably in peri for a while, but symptoms not really annoying until 56 and only recently gone on HRT. Was still having regular monthly periods, somewhat unusually the HRT seems to have screwed them up.

Wagsandclaws · 26/09/2022 17:03

Just coming up on my first year period free 🙌

Wagsandclaws · 26/09/2022 17:03

Whoops meant to say I'm 51 in Jan

Tryingmyb3st · 26/09/2022 17:03

Full.on premature menopause at 38. Finally 'diagnosed' with blood tests measuring oestrogen levels a month apart.
This was after nearly a full year of hot flushes and prickly heat in my legs at night, extreme exhaustion to the point where I was napping twice a day just to make it through work, brain fog amd complete inability to 'find' words.
Gradually coming out of the fog but it's been trial and error with HRT. Oestrogen level is in the toilet so dosage is hit and miss.
Biggest helps were daily magnesium and digestive enzyme. I know a lot of people have had success with 5-HTP supplement for sleep but it gives me terrible nightmares.

Premature menopause
I missed the symptoms for what they were. I thought they were stress.
I'm now 44 and completely post menopause

MILLYmo0se · 26/09/2022 17:10

Early 30s, last period around 38. Progesterone starts to drop around 35 on average but many people dont realise it, even if their sleep or mood is affected it often gets put down to 'life' as its a busy stage in life and family for many. Disruption in period cycle is a more obvious clue or sign, thats often mid to early 40s.
You cant test for peri menopause unless you do a series of tests over a year or so. Oestrogen doesnt steadily decline, its up, down and all over the place in peri, so you could get a random test that says you are in peri or one that says you arent, just depending on your levels that day.

neilyoungismyhero · 26/09/2022 17:10

I was 55, had a few random really really heavy periods, lots of hot flushes and then zilch. The end.

SantaOnFanta · 26/09/2022 17:14

I'm really 49's, have regular periods, but recently been feeling hot and sweaty. Is this a sign?

MILLYmo0se · 26/09/2022 17:14

Posted too soon, i did have bloods done but that was due to my age and ruling out any bigger issues, but there were 4 or 5 done over a year. The first one the GP took as being a contaminated sample as the levels were on post menopausal scale but another was 'normal', others showed levels were peri.
Many GPs will dobloods to rule out and thyroid, vitamin B etc issues but will diagnose peri on symptoms alone once those things are ruled out if you are 45+ but often from 40 yrs +

SantaOnFanta · 26/09/2022 17:15

I'm early 40's*

Duolingolater · 26/09/2022 17:15

Don't know really, had last period at 46,now 49. Always thought I would go on hrt, but have seemed to have had few, if any symptoms. I realise everyone is different and I seem to have been lucky, but some of the recent coverage of menopause has really appeared all very negative. I'm delighted never to have another period or need to worry about pregnancy

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 26/09/2022 17:25

I'm 46 and been peri for a year (that I know of) I've heard peri can last up to 10 years.
My main symptoms are a bit of brain fog, aching joints and tired, so so tired. I just have no energy for anything, which is inconvenient as I have a lot of responsibilities. 😱

Beefilm · 26/09/2022 17:31

I had hormonal headaches coupled with extreme fatigue that wiped me out for days at a time on a monthly basis for most of my 40s. Like others, I couldn't say exactly when it started but if you have symptoms any time in your 40s, I would say it was peri menopause. My actual menopause, ie last period, was when I was 50. The crappy headaches and tiredness gradually declined after that though I can still sometimes get one. I am 57 now. All in all, it has been a tiresome 15 or so years. I'm still waiting for the wow! I feel wonderful again! phase I was promised......🤔

talkingdeadscot · 26/09/2022 17:37

About 40 but only realised in retrospect. Last period at 48 so relatively early.

Allmarbleslost · 26/09/2022 17:40

I'm 42 and I have symptoms. My GP says I'm too young though and isn't at all interested

slowquickstep · 26/09/2022 18:00

47 but it was medically induced, no symptoms that i noticed before then.

Bettiespaghetti · 26/09/2022 19:17

Early 30s but not entirely sure when. Had my last DC at 31, and mentioned to the doctor in passing a couple of years later that I still hadn't had a period. Was still bf quite a lot so had put it down to that, but it was actually menopause. On the plus side, most of the insomnia and hot flushes coincided with small child bf so I didn't really notice it!

What magnesium did you use please? There are so many different types! Thank you

arethereanyleftatall · 26/09/2022 19:25

I'm. 47 and no sign so far

brunettegal · 26/09/2022 19:28

Ib 49 not had a period for nearly 2 year I am fine just my sex drive is insane not a bad thing I suppose!

Shinyhappyperson22 · 26/09/2022 19:32

I’m 43. Getting a fair few peri symptoms including periods all over the place. Although I had covid in summer and the also messed with my cycle.

Don’t feel too bad though. Eat a good diet and exercise regularly. For now. Open to HRT if I feel I need it. Friends of a similar age also can match up symptoms too.

Shinyhappyperson22 · 26/09/2022 19:35

NormalNans · 26/09/2022 16:39

Why does my GP keep telling me there’s no blood test for perimenopause and it’s a process of elimination? I know that’s not what this thread is about but I’m confused by the fact that you’ve all had blood tests and I can’t get one

Bloods are unreliable as hormones fluctuate so easily so better to review actual symptoms. Obviously could have bloods to rule out other causes of symptoms.

YumYummy · 26/09/2022 19:35

Super heavy periods at 46 after very regular periods, then no periods for 11 months and terrible night sweats at 48/49. My sex drive was through the roof between about 45 and 51, it’s more ‘normal’ now, I’m 53. Then periods returned at 49, night sweats stopped and in their place a huge rage, agitated feeling every period. I then started taking Oestrogel and don’t have the rage or the sweats. I’m 53 and haven’t had a period for 6 months.
I did have to stop taking HRT for about 7 weeks due to some operations this summer and the night sweats were back with a vengeance within 2 days of stopping. I then went back on it and a day later they stopped again.
