Perimenopause and alcohol intolerance?

christinarossetti19 · 14/04/2019 13:42

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

I'm 50 later on this year. Definitely some peri symptoms ie hot at night but still having regular periods.

I'm not a regular drinker at all but the last few months, each time I've had a glass of wine in the evening, I've had terrible problems sleeping and felt wrecked the next day. The only time this has happened before was decades ago when I had glandular fever and couldn't tolerate alcohol for a year or so afterwards.

I guess I don't particularly mind, just wondered how common it was.

TIA

I’m 50 and experiencing all the above periods went haywire at the start of this year was as regular as clockwork previously. If I have more than 1 small glass of wine my sleep is ruined, regularly waking up at night Feeling hot.

StillRunningWithScissors · 14/04/2019 19:46

Ah ha! I believe I started perimenopause about six months ago, and along with poor sleep, my tolerance has definitely dropped. I didn't link it to perimenopause, but it did change around the same time.

Aldilogue · 15/04/2019 07:32

Yep absolutely!! I’ll have two glasses and I’ll feel retched the next day. It’s very disappointing

Ivegotthree · 15/04/2019 07:36

I'm 45 and can't drink wine in the evenings for exactly the reasons you describe. Awful.

I have discovered that I'm ok with wine at lunch though, so that is now my my favourite way to socialise. Not ideal with a full time job though!

MrsEricBana · 25/04/2019 21:12

Ditto

cucumbergin · 25/04/2019 21:22

Also get this, but it seems to come & go. 6 months ago I only had to look at alcohol to feel wretched, now I can have a glass of prosecco or a gin & tonic. But no more.

Piggywaspushed · 25/04/2019 21:26

Oh God, me too! In an awful state even after low alcohol wine. It's depressing.

eastertulip · 26/04/2019 13:48

Yes. It is sad, I have a glass of wine and become unbelievably sleepy. Two glasses in the evening ruin my morning.

Bhanupriya · 26/04/2019 20:06

45 now and definitely struggling with not being able to handle any kind of alcohol.

It's like I have this relly nice friend waiting for me in the kitchen but I know even the smallest glass will leave me feeling wrecked tomorrow :(

Got sent this today and I realise i pretty much have all that is listed. Confused

Yep! I'm 48, still having regular periods and got a Mirena coil fitted.

But can't drink anymore, feel like I've been hit by a bus next day.

I've got 2 bottles of gin in the kitchen, that were gifts for Christmas but it just makes me feel so rough I can't stomach the thought of trying.

Sad
billybagpuss · 26/04/2019 20:11

Oh crap that explains so much Sad

FloatingthroughSpace · 26/04/2019 20:14

I have found that the type of wine makes a huge difference. Prosecco is a killer, even a single glass gives me a terrible hangover. New World wines are way worse than French or Italian, and older wines are better than young.

If I get a nice bottle of French white wine I can drink 2/3 bottle of a Friday or Saturday and be fine the next morning. If someone gives me Australian or Californian wine I can have 2 glasses and wake with a racing heart and 'beer fear' middle of the night. No idea what makes the difference.

AwkwardSquad · 26/04/2019 20:20

Stopped drinking altogether two years ago because of this. A couple of small glasses of wine = no sleep at all + palpitations. It was so unpleasant that the decision to just stop was actually quite easy.

Piggywaspushed · 27/04/2019 09:14

I'm the same re French wine (Spanish also OK but I think I may drink out of smaller glasses when on hols). I think it just has less crap in it. They also tend to be lower alcohol (11% compared to the 13s of NW wines)

You can buy a wine called Doctors (yes, really!) from Waitrose which is quite low alcohol Sauvignon. That said, even that is getting to me now!

Branleuse · 27/04/2019 09:37

if i drink anything other than a glass of red wine, or maybe half a cider, then I just dont sleep properly. I either cant fall asleep, or if i do, then im up at 3am. White wine is the worst

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 27/04/2019 09:40

This is me too.
Discovering Fevertree ginger beer instead.
Have been so ill after 2 glasses of wine it hasn't been too hard to give it up.

CletusVanDamme · 27/04/2019 09:42

Same as @Branleuse white wine is horrific.

damekindness · 27/04/2019 11:35

Yep - I always say I haven't given up alcohol it's given up on me. It makes me hot, headachy and a bit anxious

I miss a glass of wine to wind down with sooo much

Bhanupriya · 27/04/2019 15:13

Ooooo @Ihopeyourcakeisshit

Fevertree Ginger Beer made me think it was going to help with the flushes lol GrinGrin

TitchyP · 27/04/2019 15:21

Me too, even half a glass of Prosecco induces a hangover Sad

tribpot · 27/04/2019 15:24

This kind of makes me feel better. I'm in peri and have been sober for 8 years - I feel as if you're now all catching up with me Grin.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 27/04/2019 15:28

@Bhanupriya not getting any flushes at the moment but suffering terrible nausea and dizziness so hoping ginger beer will help?

Summersunshine2 · 27/04/2019 15:30

I don't really drink but I find going to bed later than 11ish makes me feel hungover the next day. I'm 42 Confused

HoppityChicken · 27/04/2019 15:34

Can just about manage white or rose wine as long it's with plenty of food, no more cracking open a bottle just for the sake of it. Red is like poison. Drinking generally has become more of an unpleasant experience amongst same age (round the 50 mark) friends as it seems to bring out the worst in everyone, wine has become Shouty Water. Bottled beer, no problem at all, there was some organic Prosecco that went down well recently as well, no hangovers for anyone.

MrHaroldFry · 27/04/2019 15:39

Yes, I'm 49 and a couple of years ago just gave up alcohol as I was not able for the morning after feelings any longer. I don't miss it and still might have the odd glass of Prosecco etc. if there is some firm
If celebration but they are few and far between.
I like Seedlip 108, makes it feel more like a grown up drink. OJ mixed with Sprite or the old reliable Soda Water and fresh lime.
Four months ago I had my bloods done and was diagnosed as in menopause...so yes...my anti alcohol feelings were definitely peri and menopause connected.
