Perimenopause and alcohol intolerance?

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

I'm 50 later on this year. Definitely some peri symptoms ie hot at night but still having regular periods.

I'm not a regular drinker at all but the last few months, each time I've had a glass of wine in the evening, I've had terrible problems sleeping and felt wrecked the next day. The only time this has happened before was decades ago when I had glandular fever and couldn't tolerate alcohol for a year or so afterwards.

I guess I don't particularly mind, just wondered how common it was.

TIA

@LatentPhase,

I tried some for the first time the other day and actually, was ok.

Obviously there was no happy buzz from it but also no crushing hangover for the next 3 days either GrinWink

Over the past year or so I have suffered with a racing heart every time I drink, even if it’s only 3 or 4 drinks. I’m 46 so I’m guessing I’m perimenopausal. I’ve always enjoyed having a drink, never been a big drinker more of a social one. Does anyone else suffer with this, is it worth seeing a doctor? Any advice is really appreciated 😁

Yes I barely drink these days it just doesn't agree with me. Especially wine.

I small tot of sherry over Xmas and that will be it lol.

I am right there with you! If I have a glass of wine with dinner at 6:00, at midnight I’m still having symptoms like my heart is racing and my legs are too hot for me to sleep. I’ve stopped drinking at this point bc my sleep is the priority.

Well I suppose it’s better for us health wise, it’s just nice to have the choice. Teetotal it is then 🥴 I’ve not spoke to anyone that has these symptoms, it’s nice to know it’s not just me. None of my friends have a problem drinking which makes it less fun going out now. Perhaps I need to find things to do socially that doesn’t involve drinking alcohol.

Can you try drinking an alcohol free beer or a drink that looks like alcohol e.g. lemonade so at least you are joining in somewhat.

I have never been into the booze much and society pressure often perceives it as odd. I don't know why.

I have not noticed any health benefits for not drinking much but maybe in the long term it helps us. I always walk round feeling permanently drained in the winter.

Just tell your friends it doesn't agree with you and try to find a non alcoholic drink that you can enjoy when you go out. Or are they all getting sloshed in front of you lol.

I find that my alcohol intolerance has to do more with my psychology and less with my hormones! :)

I get this too - palpitations and anxiety through the roof even after 1 glass of wine. So I have decided to quit. And I read a fab article in the Sunday Times magazine by a woman who gave up alcohol and took it as a positive step not a negative - last Sunday’s issue with Nigella on cover - and it really made me reset why I was doing this.

JoPatts · 07/01/2020 10:44

I do think there is a stigma around people not drinking, no idea why, it’s a personal choice and yes they do still get sloshed with or without my involvement 😆 at least I don’t wake up with a stinking hangover.

JoPatts · 07/01/2020 10:45

Emerald13 I have felt a little more anxious lately, so I wonder if that’s not helping either.

JoPatts · 07/01/2020 10:46

Annasgirl I will try and find this article and have a read, thank you.

I am 44 and still having periods, I went on an Alcohol Free challenge in September, I had a few glasses on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, I. The day, but that was my limit and tbh didn’t miss it, or have learnt the difference of a good tasting wine. I am so used to non alcoholic drinks now. I am still having bad period days, high anxiety, I was pretty il all over Christmas and have not been ill for years but it definitely helped stopping the cravings again. I have mastered it home, but now need to get out on the social circle again, build confidence back up and enjoy a night out without a glass of wine and eat good food instead!! 😄😄

It’s so nice to talk to other people going through the same thing. I definitely need to get more social again as well and I much prefer to go for a nice meal now. I’m actually doing veganuary, I’ve been told it helps with the symptons, we shall see 😁

OMG yes. Am 45, half one and a half pints last night and all day today have been experiencing one of the worst hangovers I've ever had in my life. I can't even have one glass of wine anymore. Am seriously thinking am going to have to knock drinking on the head for a while 🙁

Having similar issues with sugar too - seems to trigger night sweats. Had a few liquorice allsorts the other evening and sweated all night long...
