Perimenopause and alcohol intolerance?

christinarossetti19 · 14/04/2019 13:42

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

I'm 50 later on this year. Definitely some peri symptoms ie hot at night but still having regular periods.

I'm not a regular drinker at all but the last few months, each time I've had a glass of wine in the evening, I've had terrible problems sleeping and felt wrecked the next day. The only time this has happened before was decades ago when I had glandular fever and couldn't tolerate alcohol for a year or so afterwards.

I guess I don't particularly mind, just wondered how common it was.

TIA

I was able to reduce all menopausal symptoms dramatically by cutting out alcohol, sugar & coffee. After about a year I phased them back in slowly and the symptoms did not return. I also lost 6kg as a side-effect which was most welcome!

AwkwardSquad · 27/04/2019 17:56

I’ve managed the alcohol and coffee, but sadly not the sugar! Symptoms have still reduced, though. No hot flushes to speak of and no more night sweats.

AwkwardSquad · 27/04/2019 18:17

Although currently I have the feeling of ants crawling on me, and I’m delightfully spotty. Hey ho.

LatentPhase · 27/04/2019 23:27

OMG this is me!

Used to drink wine about 4 days a week with DP, but developed the run-over-by-a-bus thing the next morning & awful sleep after only 1 or 2.

Prior to my peri phase (last six months) I agonised over how on Earth I was gonna start to cut down. The thought depressed me.

Now this has happened giving up has been a total no-brainer! Feel loads better, have lost weight. Not feeling so destined for the scrap heap.

Went out with the girls last night though and discovered strangely, that bottled beer is ok. So all is not lost!

HoppityChicken · 28/04/2019 01:57

Yup, bottled beer - I've been drinking this instead of wine for a while now. Liked it anyway but now it's my drink of choice. I steer clear of the micro brewery ones as those seem to be too strong but any standard Pils, Bud, Perroni type beer in a bottle (not tap) and there's no problem.

Summersunshine2 · 28/04/2019 07:39

This thread would be a bottle beer PR/marketing persons dream!

HarryBlackberry1 · 28/04/2019 07:57

This has happened to me. I'm 46 and on HRT. One gin and tonic and I feel like I'm going to be sick and have the worst hangover ever. I though I was the only one!

Piggywaspushed · 28/04/2019 08:05

Trouble is I hate beer !

I also haven't lost any weight (just a stubborn 5 ilb weight gain that won't shift) so this is all most unfair!

WhoAteMyNuts · 28/04/2019 08:05

This started early 40s for me. So much so I now drink mostly low or AF beers and wines as I can't stand how rubbish I feel the next day.

practicallyperfectwithprosecco · 28/04/2019 08:12

Ah that explains a lot!! I've been getting dreadful hangovers after 1 drink and I used to be a serious party animal! I'm currently really regretting the prosecco I shared with 2 friends so hardly staggering drunk but awful nights sleep and currently feel like I'm going to puke!

I'm no longer practically perfect with prosecco 😫

FloatingthroughSpace · 28/04/2019 08:14

I don't understand the prosecco thing at all. It's obviously full of crap to make so many of us dreadful, and yet people keep drinking it....?

TheClitterati · 28/04/2019 15:33

51 and no symptoms yet. But my tolerance for alcohol has diminished drastically the last few years.

I'm considering stopping drinking entirely ShockShockShock

cucumbergin · 28/04/2019 16:36

Dammit. Looks like my brief "can drink a single drink without feeling crap next day" time is over again - felt like crap today after having a single gin while making food for DC.

Back to not drinking at all for a while then.

Bhanupriya · 28/04/2019 20:32

Hahahaha @Summersunshine2

Maybe we should start a micro brewery.. find a beer that doesn't affect us and then market only to women our age....

This time next year Rodney.... GrinGrinGrin

KickBishopBrennanUpTheArse · 28/04/2019 22:08

Yes bottled cider only for me. And one small bottle max.

Wine gives me an instant crushing headache followed by a delightful hour on the toilet.

Spirits make me throw up all the next day.

I've never liked beer so that's out.

All started with menopause. Probably for the best really but it would be nice to drink occasionally.

Ivegotthree · 28/04/2019 22:25

I thought I was ok with gin but I had two fins on Friday night and spent yesterday thinking I was ill before realising it was just a fucking hangover.

I'm so sad about it. I haven't been a big drinker for years but do love a couple of drinks, literally a couple, every now and then.

If there was a pill I could take that would allow me this without feeling like I'm going to die after two drinks I would pay the earth for it. I don't WANT to be teetotal. I don't have a problem with alcohol. It is a small pleasure, or was.

It's all very annoying.

BooseysMom · 29/04/2019 19:54

Annoying in the extreme!
I'm currently covered in acne and have ants crawling all over me, see-sawing moods and anxiety and I can't even have a bloody drink to drown my sorrows!! Shock
I still keep a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and a Shiraz but only dare half a glass every other night. If i have a large glass i have raging palpitations and can't sleep.
Like a pp said it's like there's an old friend in the kitchen who always sorted me out and now I can't talk to them!
But god I have to say it does help enormously to ' talk' about it here Smile

SolitudeAtAltitude · 29/04/2019 22:16

I thought I was just weird, and had randomly gone off alcohol at the age of 48 Grin

I wake up with crazy hot legs now after wine.

One beer is fine, and love non alcoholic ginger beer too

And decaf tea.

How exciting Wink

cucumbergin · 29/04/2019 22:42

@BooseysMom I have 5 (part) bottles of gin from birthdays etc sitting there taunting me. DP hates gin!

At least I can drink the tonic with a slice and ice. And Seedlip is interesting.

I've started trying to add gin to recipes. Gin pasta sauce anyone?

BooseysMom · 30/04/2019 08:56

@cucumbergin...

I have a jar of pink gin rock from hols that I'm taking to work today .. That's as exciting as it gets for me nowadays! Grin

LittleCandle · 30/04/2019 09:02

The minute I have a glass of wine my face and neck flush. So attractive - not! This happened to DM, too, during the menopause. Its horrible. Fortunately, I rarely drink any more, so it isn't a huge deal. I haven't noticed that I feel hungover the morning after a drink, so that is a plus - so far anyway!

LatentPhase · 30/04/2019 11:27

Can anyone tell me what Seedlip is like before I spend £24 on a bottle?

SolitudeAtAltitude · 30/04/2019 14:13

I tried it, bitter boring and not worth bothering with imo!

MrHaroldFry · 30/04/2019 19:04

@Latent
For me Seedlip is lovely if mixed with right tonic water. But try before you buy as it is not a straight replacement for gun and it might not be your thing (example, I don't like Bombay Sapphire but do like SipSmiths Sloe Gin)
I do agree that soda water and lime can be a good swap and Leitz Eins Zwei Zero (Riesling) is lovely too at about £7 a bottle.

LatentPhase · 01/05/2019 11:31

Thanks both Smile
