Week 2 - Autumn Low Carb Bootcamp

Well! It's the first day of reckoning:

Here is the Spreadsheet of Wonderfulness

I am waving my big stick around already, because it's obvious from the most recent threads that there has been a fair amount of cheating going on.

And we have only just finished week one!

A couple of things:

IT'S NOT CALLED BOOTCAMP FOR NOTHING

This period is designed to shift you quickly into becoming ketogenically adapted, i.e. to shift your body into burning fat rather than burning carbs.

This can only happen if you consistently reduce the carbs that you are consuming

If you cheat - even if it is just the odd thing here and there - then this won't happen, and it will take you much longer to start burning (and therefore losing) fat.

These two weeks were never going to be easy. And although I wrote about them, and how you needed to plan for them, it's clear that this hasn't always been appreciated.

I do, really, understand that it is hard. Especially if low carbing is new for you. But it's designed with a purpose, and you will really see the benefit of it if you stick with it.

JUST BECAUSE YOU'VE DONE BOOTCAMP BEFORE DOESN'T MEAN THAT IT'S ANY DIFFERENT FOR YOU

Please be mindful of people who are new to Bootcamp. You may know what you can/can't do in terms of carb consumption. But there has been quite a bit of posting about cheating. Even if you are doing this mindfully, please remember that you aren't supposed to be doing this in the first two weeks of Bootcamp, and it makes it really hard for those who are new to low carbing, and who might be struggling.

A bit of sensitivity is called for here.

And finally, when you get on the scales this morning/tomorrow morning, please remember that this is about you and nobody else. It isn't a competition. Some people lose weight much quicker than others.

If you have a lot of weight to lose, chances are that you will lose it quicker than if you are closer to your target. Some people will lose a shedload in week one, but then nothing in week two - whereas others will lose more modestly, but consistently, week after week. The only thing that matters is what is happening to you.

If you haven't lost much, please don't be disappointed. Make sure that you are genuinely following the rules - are you drinking enough water? Are you eating high fat? That one glass or wine, or that small piece of cake - they all add up.

And even if you have genuinely followed the rules - if you haven't seen the scales move by much - have you measured?

We are all different, and rates of loss will be different too. Just think about the food that you have been eating, and consider how this WOE compares with low calorie or low fat diets.

Changing to a low carb way of eating as compared to a low fat or low calorie diet is not an easy transition, and it is to be expected that there will be snags along the way. Hopefully the Bootcamp threads will give you the help and guidance that you need - and I hope that when you get on the scales next, your hard work will be rewarded!

Onwards and downwards

What do you all have on the menu today?

I have some lamb shanks marinating in yogurt, garlic, mint, garam masala, chilli and cumin. They're ready to go in the slow cooker with a load of butter on top ready for this evening. I'll have cauliflower rice with it.

Breakfast was eggs poached in spinach with home made mayo and coffee and cream.

Not sure what to have for lunch - salad and tinned sardines possibly.

Up to you when you post Bronx - the spreadsheet is your resource!

Snack before early run: celery with a bit of peanut butter
B: mozzarella and a few cherry tomatoes liberally doused with olive oil
L: Salami and avocado salad with oily dressing
D: Black farmer sausages or pork steaks with roast veg.
I've told my dm and dsis how much weight I've lost lc-ing and they both want to quiz me about the WOEGrin .

Purple2012 · 21/09/2013 15:37

Really struggling today. Had a sneak peek on the scales this morning and less than half a lb off. I havent eaten carby stuff for 3 weeks, have been eating ff options for 2 weeks and not had diet coke for over a week and I have only lost 4.9 lb.

tenementfunster · 21/09/2013 15:43

Periods do /can make you put a bit of weight on, don't they?! Bit peeved but just started period.
Haven't cheated at all but have needed lempsip to get thru this week. Combination of both?

BIWI · 21/09/2013 16:13

Purple - Only?! Let's round it up to 5lbs, and that's 10 packs of lard! How much were you expecting you should lose?

tenement - Lemsip has sugar in it, does it not?

I know its a fair bit biwi but I was hoping for a bit more. I think it feels worse as I lost 3.4lb in the first few days then nothing for 8 days then only a lb the next week. I think I was hoping being strict on bootcamp, starting to eat meat and giving up diet coke would have more of a difference. Hoping for a drop in weight before Monday as I know it can fluctuate. I don't know what else I can do. I've pretty much resigned myself to not getting to my holiday goal weight. I will just have to play the long game. I still have just over a stone to lose. Hope to get that off before Christmas.

captainmummy · 21/09/2013 16:28

Purple - youve cracked your addiction to coke and sweet things, you've eaten healthier than you've eaten in years, - and it is always said that 1-2lb per week loss is sustainable. You haven't seen the huge losses that others have, because you don't have so much to lose - and it's not a quick fix. Keep going and it will come off.

Purple2012 · 21/09/2013 16:34

Thanks I will keep going. I'm not known for my patience!! Im ok most of the time. Im just having a down day.

ImATotJeSuisUneTot · 21/09/2013 16:40

DP has just lifted me over his shoulder, fireman style. Grin Not something that would have been possible a few months ago!

30lbs + lighter!! GrinGrinGrin

holmessweetholmes · 21/09/2013 16:55

30lb?! Bloody hell, Tot! Well done you.

whodunnit · 21/09/2013 18:04

fuckity fuck fuck

I have been so careful and then gone and blown it accidentally. I bought a 75cl bottle of volvic flavoured water for the sports bottle (very true it makes drinking easier) then downed it and another today (neede new bottle at work). Just read the bottle and the fucker is 12g carb per 25cl. 36 crappy stupid carbs two days running. I am so pissed off at my stupid mistake. I stupidly assumed that it was sugarfree flavour.

Please someone tell me that I have not lost all my ketosis and started absorbing all the fats I have eaten in the last 48 hours.....

LCHammer · 21/09/2013 18:13

Tots - well done!

Whodunit - gah, that's how the carbs have crept in all along.

BIWI · 21/09/2013 18:26

whodunnit - oh bugger Sad

Never mind. These things do happen to all of us, I'm afraid.

If you've been following Bootcamp rules apart from that, then your carbs per day should still be low enough to allow you to be losing weight. Honestly!

Just be super strict for the next couple of days and you should be fine.

I have just narrowly avoided making dumplings Shock Shock to go with our pigs' cheek stew! DH talked me down. I don't know what came over me. Hmm

MrsHerculePoirot · 21/09/2013 19:04

Well done crabby's DH!!!

We had butter chicken from IPD - it had to be my favourite meal ever!!!

starrystarryknut · 21/09/2013 19:25

Daisychicken - yes that's what I paid on Amazon. It's expensive, but it should last for ages. After all we're not using it all the time as some kind of constant sugar substitute - it's just an ingredient in a one-off item.

I've been tutoring on a course all day today. The provided lunch was pasta bake, bread rolls, green salad on the table, and trifle for pudding. All I ate was a plateful of lettuce and a spoonful of grated cheese Sad There was no other option! I thought it would be a buffet and so I would have options, but no. And morning and afternoon tea was biscuits and cakes, so that was a no-go zone, too, of course.

I've just got home and I must confess, today I am a bit hungry. So I look in the fridge for a snack and DH has eaten all my FF yoghurt while I've been out. That's not fair!!! He can have whatever he likes for a snack, but he pinched mine! I've got some nice chicken thighs in the oven now, though. Hope they're cooked soon! At least I managed to resist the temptations at work (the food looked nice)... hope it shows on Monday.

tenementfunster · 21/09/2013 19:47

Ah well I live and learn. Will drop the lemsip but I need the cough mixture. Am keeping to all the other rules so will have to take the hit this week.
Bollocks.

BerylStreep · 21/09/2013 20:01

Folks, I'm not really doing so well. Having lost a stone since the end of March, and then done bootcamp lite all summer, I seem to be doing that self sabotaging thing when it comes to having to buckle down and starting bootcamp proper.

If you don't mind, I will continue to lurk and post my weight on a weekly basis, but I feel a bit of a fraud posting regularly without fessing up that I haven't really managed to start bootcamp properly.

I have to say though, well done to all who are doing so well.

I agree weekends are much harder to control.

DP just cooked an amazingly delicious spicy steak, mushroom and cheese melt thing though - was lovely.

LilyAmaryllis · 21/09/2013 20:17

Wow Starry you are showing iron willpower there!

What is it that trips you up Beryl?

I hope we all have good losses soon (or maybe in time for Monday!!)

It's not so much weekends, and I'm not being a carby twat, it's just that I find it hard to go from bootcamp lite to bootcamp proper. Berries, diary (esp cream) and alcohol are my vices, and it is telling that I have stayed exactly the same weight for what seems like months and months. I know I will have to give them up if I truly want to lose more weight (which I do, I really do). I think it is a matter of me having to get a grip. Maybe I need to plan a few days ultra BC to get things moving for me.

Anyhow, I don't want to derail others by talking about my weaknesses. This WOE is fab, it really is. Flowers BIWI and Willie. You are amazing.
