Week 2 - Autumn Low Carb Bootcamp

BIWI · 15/09/2013 23:55

Well! It's the first day of reckoning:

Here is the Spreadsheet of Wonderfulness

I am waving my big stick around already, because it's obvious from the most recent threads that there has been a fair amount of cheating going on.

And we have only just finished week one!

A couple of things:

IT'S NOT CALLED BOOTCAMP FOR NOTHING

This period is designed to shift you quickly into becoming ketogenically adapted, i.e. to shift your body into burning fat rather than burning carbs.

This can only happen if you consistently reduce the carbs that you are consuming

If you cheat - even if it is just the odd thing here and there - then this won't happen, and it will take you much longer to start burning (and therefore losing) fat.

These two weeks were never going to be easy. And although I wrote about them, and how you needed to plan for them, it's clear that this hasn't always been appreciated.

I do, really, understand that it is hard. Especially if low carbing is new for you. But it's designed with a purpose, and you will really see the benefit of it if you stick with it.

JUST BECAUSE YOU'VE DONE BOOTCAMP BEFORE DOESN'T MEAN THAT IT'S ANY DIFFERENT FOR YOU

Please be mindful of people who are new to Bootcamp. You may know what you can/can't do in terms of carb consumption. But there has been quite a bit of posting about cheating. Even if you are doing this mindfully, please remember that you aren't supposed to be doing this in the first two weeks of Bootcamp, and it makes it really hard for those who are new to low carbing, and who might be struggling.

A bit of sensitivity is called for here.

And finally, when you get on the scales this morning/tomorrow morning, please remember that this is about you and nobody else. It isn't a competition. Some people lose weight much quicker than others.

If you have a lot of weight to lose, chances are that you will lose it quicker than if you are closer to your target. Some people will lose a shedload in week one, but then nothing in week two - whereas others will lose more modestly, but consistently, week after week. The only thing that matters is what is happening to you.

If you haven't lost much, please don't be disappointed. Make sure that you are genuinely following the rules - are you drinking enough water? Are you eating high fat? That one glass or wine, or that small piece of cake - they all add up.

And even if you have genuinely followed the rules - if you haven't seen the scales move by much - have you measured?

We are all different, and rates of loss will be different too. Just think about the food that you have been eating, and consider how this WOE compares with low calorie or low fat diets.

Changing to a low carb way of eating as compared to a low fat or low calorie diet is not an easy transition, and it is to be expected that there will be snags along the way. Hopefully the Bootcamp threads will give you the help and guidance that you need - and I hope that when you get on the scales next, your hard work will be rewarded!

And crabby has just reminded me why I shouldn't click links on mn.

Sorry New, but BIWI started it! Grin

BIWI it is compelling - I spend ages browsing that page, with a mixture of horror and admiration.

Bullet gurny lady has a great body. I think the problem comes about when they start using anabolic steroids. I was looking at the pictures and wondering why so many had such masculine faces, and I realised that it's the masculinising effects of the steroids that are necessary to get that incredibly extreme pumped up look. The ones who look natural and with great definition have normal faces, the huge one really don't!

Loopy herbal teas are fine, but do be aware that many, many herbs have diuretic properties and so will make you pee more. You need to be having just water too.

[flower] purple well done on your week without the demon diet coke!

timidviper · 19/09/2013 21:37

toomuch My trousers get longer too before I have to go down a size. It's really odd!

loopyloou · 19/09/2013 21:45

I slipped slightly off the wagon this afternoon, I had a square of 80% chocolate and a spoon of peanut butter. I'm determined to get back in track tomorrow and in the meantime have been drinking lots of warm water with a splash of lemon juice.

I think I need to try and stay away from the scales for now so will just measure myself once a week in Monday instead for a while.

CiderwithBuda · 19/09/2013 22:07

Hello from Dublin!

LOLing away at ProteinShakeGate! And yes BIWI you should def run in that t-shirt!

Travelling day for me. Up early and had a Greek yoghurt while running around getting packed and getting DS organised for school. Got to airport with lots of time to spare so decided to try have a decent breakfast to stop me feeling tempted by crap on the plane. Restaurant did eggs benedict with either bacon or flat mushroom on a muffin. So I asked to swap the muffin for mushroom. It was nice!

Am staying at my Dad's and an old friend came for lunch sort of unexpectedly. I made a big bowl of salad with some tomatoes and goats cheese and I added a few flaked almonds - not ideal but was trying to conure something nice out of not a lot! Had with sliced roast beef and turkey and a little cheese. Avoided the yummy Irish brown soda bread with butter.

Dinner was a pork chop with the rest of the salad. Dad very apologetic that he forgot to buy wine! I was grateful!

He did buy my favourite low carb granola though! Although I obviously won't be having it. And he bought crisps! Tayto crisps which are yum. Won't be having those either!

Have drunk two litres of water. About to drink some more. Have had too many cups of tea but figure its better than wine!

Night all!

JustasmallGless · 19/09/2013 23:37

Night Buda!

That's me just in from seeing Sean Lock who claims his shameful habit is going on mumsnet!!
Not one of the bootcamp gang are you Sean???!!

B boiled eggs with mayo
L lettuce leaves with cheese and onion filler
D bolognaise sauce with courgette strips.

I'm missing my running as working full time two DC with all their activities plus studying for a biiiigggg exam in 10 days.

Keeping off the wine...just. It does become a habit to use it as a "treat"

Night all and well done

Ps new start - chuffed for you that date one went well

ImATotJeSuisUneTot · 20/09/2013 06:22

Didn't sleep a wink last night due to DD2s new separation anxiety/teething.

This is the sort of thing that sends me to carbs, it will just have to be caffeine today!

Ruprekt · 20/09/2013 07:57

Water and butter are the key.......

holmessweetholmes · 20/09/2013 07:58

Well I'm back up a couple of pounds - I guess that's the trouble with daily weighing. I didn't intend to weigh daily - I was just curious! I think part of the fluctuation might be because of digestive issues - like some others I am finding I'm not very, ahem, regular atm. Maybe loads of eggs don't help! Hoping a strong coffee and some flax seed might though.

ImATotJeSuisUneTot · 20/09/2013 08:08

Ruprekt, was that to me? I've had a litre of water this morning already! Smile

captainmummy · 20/09/2013 08:11

Oo Gless - remember 'slatterly'? She was so funny, she could have been Sean Lock!

Purple - well done on kicking the coke habit! That single thing is probably worth so much to your overall health. Really hope you keep it going!

IamaTot - sleep deprivation is proven to make you eat more! Be mindful... good luck.

bettybigballs · 20/09/2013 08:30

Morning campers, hectic couple of days so I missed shake gate- catching up giggling on the bus!

Yesterday was my lesson in being prepared. Managed to leave my bag of food of home so had to cobble together breakfast and lunch from the smallest, shittest tescos ever. Managed to find Greek yog but was total 0%, there was some OL but was higher in carbs. For lunch I had a pack of ham and cucumber. It wasn't great. Fell onto a roast chicken last night to make up for it.

Today my bag is with me so I have egg muffins for breakfast, meatloaf and buttered veg for lunch and tuna mayo with cucumber as a snack. Dinner will prob be chipolatas with cauli mash.

Happy Friday! Can't believe we've nearly done two weeks.

Pleaseandthankyou · 20/09/2013 08:48

Keep at it. Yesterday two people mentioned how much weight I had lost off my thighs. I even saw a photo and thought I looked good! I usually cringe and delete them ( unless I have been hiding at the back). The trousers from the back of the wardrobe have made a comeback. It is strange to be losing weight and not being hungry. Finding it hard to down the water. Drinking lots of green tea. Coffee habit has reduced drastically. This has been a gradual process from the last boot camp.

cymrukernow · 20/09/2013 08:52

On day 5- never bothered with a proper "diet" ( oh WOE is me!) before so amazed I got this far! Broken my diet coke habit too, so feeling smug proud. Started drinking the stuff 6 years ago when my daughter went to hospital with cancer. It became my emotion crutch and caffeine fix ( dont do coffee or tea). Daughter is fine now so time to say goodbye to the syrupy crap!

daisychicken · 20/09/2013 09:26

Weighed myself this morning and 3lb down..

I'm sticking to:

Greek yoghurt (have Total atm but not as nice as Lidl's) and a piece of cheese for breakfast - I stopped the berries with my yoghurt - this has made a difference as I'm not getting peckish before lunch so obv fruit sugars do affect me...

soup for lunch (cream of mushroom atm but changes every 3-4 days)

low carb meal so last night was cauli cheese and sausage, tonight will be roast chicken with veg..

Rarely need to snack but a baby bel or 4 Brazil nuts or a small pot of peanuts seems to keep me on an even keel if I do get hungry.

I need to drink more plain water still - i find when the weather is cold, I don't want cold drinks.. so I'm still figuring that out... but I'm 3lb down and I'm going to stay that way! ??

BIWI · 20/09/2013 09:29

Well done, daisy! Flowers

LCHammer · 20/09/2013 09:31

I've tried a variety of herbal teas but all are a bit of a disappointment. I'm sticking to water or sprinkling water.

I wonder if I'm eating enough as I'm not that hungry, I don't have those sudden hunger pangs when you think 'the hell with it, I need to eat something now or I'll die'. My weight is fluctuating a bit but still below what I started with. I might need an extra week on BC.

BIWI · 20/09/2013 09:39

Sprinkling water? Grin

OP posts:
LCHammer · 20/09/2013 09:41

Grin well, a sprinkling of sparkling water

BerylStreep · 20/09/2013 09:47

Oh, I have missed shake gate - will have to catch up on thread. I did however click some of those muscle women links.

I know one of the women on that page. Went to school with her. She's a complete psycho nutjob, quite apart from the whole body building thing.

bigkidsdidit · 20/09/2013 10:05

DH started boot camping on Tuesday and he's lost 2.5 kilos already! I think this is the first time mumsnet has impressed him Grin

BIWI · 20/09/2013 10:08
Grin Good for him. It's really infuriating how much more quickly men seem to lose the weight, and how much they can lose.
OP posts:
daisychicken · 20/09/2013 10:50

Well done to bigkids DH!

Love the sprinkling water! Grin I drink sprinkling water more in the winter months as it just feels better than cold tap water for some unknown reason yet in summer months I prefer cold tap water(!) yup wierdo!! I am a tea addict and I know it(!) but am drinking weak peppermint tea as a substitute and going to buy a different type every month just to make a change....

StuntNun · 20/09/2013 11:49

I like to drink hot water: just boiled water from the kettle with a splash of cold so I don't burn my tongue. It's surprisingly flavourful.

My DH is back from a business trip in America and he brought back a bottle of Baileys. I might have to strategically regift it and hope he doesn't notice.

NewStartNewStory · 20/09/2013 12:37

Today i am struggling. TOM, the unavoidable slipping, too little sleep and a meeting that I am dreading. So in my wisdom I have just made cake. Thankfully I can freeze it and send it in for Christmas fair or whatever but still. Why do that to yourself? Confused

NigellasGuest · 20/09/2013 13:05

newstart when I'm down or feeling a bit out of control sometimes I feel like baking - I don't know why. I think it's a comfort thing - it's not even to do with wanting to eat the stuff, (although that's a whole other story)!! just the physical act of baking...
