Week 2 - Autumn Low Carb Bootcamp

Well! It's the first day of reckoning:

Here is the Spreadsheet of Wonderfulness

I am waving my big stick around already, because it's obvious from the most recent threads that there has been a fair amount of cheating going on.

And we have only just finished week one!

A couple of things:

IT'S NOT CALLED BOOTCAMP FOR NOTHING

This period is designed to shift you quickly into becoming ketogenically adapted, i.e. to shift your body into burning fat rather than burning carbs.

This can only happen if you consistently reduce the carbs that you are consuming

If you cheat - even if it is just the odd thing here and there - then this won't happen, and it will take you much longer to start burning (and therefore losing) fat.

These two weeks were never going to be easy. And although I wrote about them, and how you needed to plan for them, it's clear that this hasn't always been appreciated.

I do, really, understand that it is hard. Especially if low carbing is new for you. But it's designed with a purpose, and you will really see the benefit of it if you stick with it.

JUST BECAUSE YOU'VE DONE BOOTCAMP BEFORE DOESN'T MEAN THAT IT'S ANY DIFFERENT FOR YOU

Please be mindful of people who are new to Bootcamp. You may know what you can/can't do in terms of carb consumption. But there has been quite a bit of posting about cheating. Even if you are doing this mindfully, please remember that you aren't supposed to be doing this in the first two weeks of Bootcamp, and it makes it really hard for those who are new to low carbing, and who might be struggling.

A bit of sensitivity is called for here.

And finally, when you get on the scales this morning/tomorrow morning, please remember that this is about you and nobody else. It isn't a competition. Some people lose weight much quicker than others.

If you have a lot of weight to lose, chances are that you will lose it quicker than if you are closer to your target. Some people will lose a shedload in week one, but then nothing in week two - whereas others will lose more modestly, but consistently, week after week. The only thing that matters is what is happening to you.

If you haven't lost much, please don't be disappointed. Make sure that you are genuinely following the rules - are you drinking enough water? Are you eating high fat? That one glass or wine, or that small piece of cake - they all add up.

And even if you have genuinely followed the rules - if you haven't seen the scales move by much - have you measured?

We are all different, and rates of loss will be different too. Just think about the food that you have been eating, and consider how this WOE compares with low calorie or low fat diets.

Changing to a low carb way of eating as compared to a low fat or low calorie diet is not an easy transition, and it is to be expected that there will be snags along the way. Hopefully the Bootcamp threads will give you the help and guidance that you need - and I hope that when you get on the scales next, your hard work will be rewarded!

Onwards and downwards

I agree, somehow cake = nurture but it is more the act of baking it and the smell of it cooking rather than eating it! (Although Nigella is right, that is a whole other story!)

LilyAmaryllis · 20/09/2013 13:41

Stay strong NewStart however bad the meeting it will definitely be over and in the past at some point today. Can you think of something delicious and low carb to make later?

Twit · 20/09/2013 13:49

Hi all. I'm a bit fed up today. I've got fungus growing on me like an itchy rash, which I need to take piriton for, but as that is really sweet I haven't, and I have a horrible cold and sore throat Sad. My destructive constantly being a danger to himself 2 yr old is being, well, himself really as well as not sleeping and the oldest is being a teenage dirtbagWink. To top it all off I have (stupidly) weighed myself and have gained a pound. I only lost a pound last week (although I started the previous Thursday and had actually lost 4 pounds by the weigh in on Monday but didn't count it at the first one....
I'm rambling I know, sorry. I feel sad. I haven't cheated, I've drunk lots of water etc. it makes me want to pack it all in and buy a big bar of dairy milk and enjoy myself (for about an hour) with hot cup of tea.
Could you all tell me to get a grip please?

Twit · 20/09/2013 13:50

Ffs. Toddler has just grabbed my only belly steak and run off eating it...

Purple2012 · 20/09/2013 13:51

I saw a quote that I think about when it is sometimes a struggle -

don't give up what you want most for what you want now

ofcoursethisisanamechange · 20/09/2013 13:57

get a grip twit- stick with it- it will be worth it! you have lost weight over all and little fluctuations will happen. Remember this is a new WOE not a short term fix.

starrystarryknut · 20/09/2013 13:58

Sympathies Newstart re stress. Last night was a big crisis in DH business. Spent hours together mulling over solutions and normally that level of stress would have definitely had me reaching for the wine. It was at least a half-bottler on the stressometer (probably more). BUT I didn't touch a drop or go off the WOE at all. I have iron willer!!! Feeling quite pleased with myself for passing this test!

googoogoggles · 20/09/2013 14:49

In a nutshell:
Been good/no cheating.
Sneaky weigh this am.
2.5lbs on!
BEEN GOOD! FFS!

Immediate emotional response –well stuff it, I'll drink wine/eat cake tonight! (last night before DD heads to uni so bit of a family meal thing going on in GooGoo house)
More measured (later) response – remember what stuntnun (?) and others posted re fat turning water leading to weight increase following by weight loss
Sticking to it/trying to be hopeful/making sure I drink my 3l of water!

Grab that belly steak twit and keep pressing on. Like your quote, Purple There's another (Buddhist) one I found somewhere that's similar but I spilled coffee all over it and the paper I wrote it on disintegrated. Something like:
What you do today is who you are tomorrow

So in Bootcamp terms:
Carby twat today, fat(ter) carby twat tomorrow

Have a good weekend all and good luck to Newstart and those dealing with stressful situations. Well done starry for not reaching for the wine bottle last night!
Agree with Nigella and Viper about whole nurture side of baking. My mum always baked on a Sunday when the roast was in and I've always loved baking with DDs so have this strong urge to bake a couple of cakes later today for DD to take away with her....

loopyloou · 20/09/2013 16:13

Twit and Googoo, I'm in a similar situation. Been good all week, weighed myself yesterday, had put 1 lb on! Very frustrating!

I'm struggling today too, just got in from extremely stressful work and would normally comfort eat Hmm I'm fighting it at the moment.

Stick with it ladies Smile

halfthesize · 20/09/2013 16:16

I have no appetite at all today, drinking water and had bacon and poached egg for brunch Smile

ofcoursethisisanamechange · 20/09/2013 16:28

starrystarry- any success with your low carb granola???

Pagwatch · 20/09/2013 16:45

I have been sooooooo good. I did my workout today. I have stuck to the regime perfectly. I am losing weight and stuff but the sun is shining, it's Friday and I really want a glass of something nice.

[sigh] it's mineral water and a slice of lemon isn't it?

holmessweetholmes · 20/09/2013 17:12

Fridays seem to be a problem for me - the siren wine is calling. I shall resist... For some reason I also feel like eating a whole vat jar of peanut butter. But steak and cauliflower cheese will have to do .

MrsHerculePoirot · 20/09/2013 17:20

Stick with it, don't panic!the thing is to either weight exactly the same each week or weigh daily. For me as a daily weigher I know my weight fluctuated by up to 2lbs within any give week, depends on water, what time I ate the night before, how much sleep I have had etc...sometimes it seems a it random, but over time I have lost nearly three stone... If worried post exactly what you are eating and drinking and see if many one has any tips!

loopyloou · 20/09/2013 18:37

B: egg mayo, 1 rasher bacon, 3 fried mushrooms
L: tuna mayo with cucumber, red pepper, spring onion
D: moussaka
S: 1 Babybel, 1 spoon peanut butter (I know, I know!! I will get back to normal now)
Lots of coffee at work (black decaff), now need to get on with drinking water.

NewStartNewStory · 20/09/2013 18:46

I decided the best way to deal with feeling crap was to finally get around to re-dying my hair and a relaxing pampering bath. If that is what it takes to keep me on the straight an narrow i think i can live with this. Peaceful bath is a pure luxury. especially as ds is with his father this weekend so it was completely uninterrupted! Forgot lunch earlier and feeling very under the influence of tom (emotional and generally bloaty/yucky) going to aim for something nice warm and fat loaded for tea. Not sure what yet but will see what inspiration hits ignores me when i look in the cupboards in a mo.

May you all have good friday nights!

starrystarryknut · 20/09/2013 19:09

Oohh yes, NameChange I have in fact perfected low carb granola, but I didn't want to own up to it, because BIWI is a bit strict about nuts and it's got nuts.

Who wants the recipe? It's fab stirred into a natural ff yoghurt. IThe carb count of 1 dessert spoon works out to be about 0.5g, so it's nothing really! I let myself have one bowl per day and my weight is going DOWN so it must be ok Smile

loopyloou · 20/09/2013 19:10

Ooh starry can you pm me the recipe please? Thank you Smile

starrystarryknut · 20/09/2013 19:10

You have to order some Erithrytol (brand name Sukrin) off the internet first, though. Amazon have it.

KinkyDorito · 20/09/2013 19:14

I wouldn't worry about fluctuating weight. On this WOE, it seems really common to go up a bit, then down a bit, and sometimes down a lot! I've never experienced a weight loss like this in how it is going down, but it is going down.

toomuchicecream · 20/09/2013 19:15

Am eating fab dinner - adapted the Mark's apple bacon and mushroom risotto with cauliflower rice, and have put asparagus, smoked trout and prawns in instead.

Started off with butter and olive oil to fry grated cauli in and added a splash or two of madiera (no open white wine) to stop it sticking. Oh - and a knorr herb stock pot too. After five minutes I put the asparagus in and after a feworeinutes added fish, prawns and cream, along with the juice of a lemon. Yum yum yum

holmessweetholmes · 20/09/2013 19:22

Ooh - I'd love that recipe Starry!

bigkidsdidit · 20/09/2013 19:28

I'd love it too!

Purple2012 · 20/09/2013 19:30

Ok a bit tmi. Has anyone noticed a difference in their poo colour? Mine is light green!

Also I am eating a lot of salad but not a lot of veg. Does anyone have a creamy sauce recipe I can put over broccoli and cauliflower. Do you think heating cream cheese would work?

JustasmallGless · 20/09/2013 19:31

Purple, imelt cream cheese and add strong cheddar for cheese sauce.
For fish pie I use crème Fraiche and add cheese
