June 2025 Low Carb Bootcamp Week 1

Just4June · 01/06/2025 08:46

Exciting title, I know! It's 1st June, and we're off (although I know many have been following bootcamp rules for a while).

Remember to use your new name, if you changed it=.

Firstly a disclaimer:
The bootcamp threads are a community effort. I, and any of the other MNetters who give advice here, are not medics and we are not qualified in nutrition or dietetics. Recommendations and support are based on our experiences and understanding of low carbing, developed over many years. Before starting, if you are on any kind of long-term medication (especially for high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol), please check with your GP, as the results of low carbing can mean you may need to adjust your dosage. And if you’re pregnant or breast-feeding, we suggest you follow Bootcamp Light. If you have a history of disordered eating, please consider very carefully whether or not this way of eating (WOE) will be in your best interests.

HERE is the new spreadsheet. Thanks @FinallyHere for taking on the technical role again.

If you're not on the spreadsheet and want to be added, message @FinallyHere or add yourself to the bottom of the list. Please don't adjust any of the other cells, except the one for entering your weight. You don't have to be on the spreadsheet to join in with the threads, and if you want to be on the spreadsheet bu don;t want to post your actual weight simply enter 100 in the first column and reduce that by the appropriate amount each week.

I'm starting today, since it's the beginning of a new month, and using this morning's weight, but some like to weigh on a Monday, or a Friday (before the sins of a weekend), or to enter the lowest weight of the week, or an average. Some people weigh every day (I'm a daily weigher), some people once a week, and some people avoid the scales altogether, relying on body measurements and general health and wellbeing.

It is important to be familiar with bootcamp rules, and to know the carb counts in various foods. They are on the tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet. If you've been on bootcamps for years you might want to familiarise yourself with the information - I'd forgotten how carby some nuts are - and if you're new to bootcamp have a good look at all the resources. And ask any questions you want, someone should be able to give you an answer.

Good luck everyone. Here's to an excellent month!

Good luck everyone.

Dinner out tonight. I had an oyster (with lime and chilli); asparagus with smoked eel crudo; a small piece of pork belly with an apple thing and wilted wild garlic leaves (left nearly all the potato and most of the apple stuff); then cheese and onions.

Small portions but it felt like a lot of food. However I didn't eat the bread (they gave us some to take home instead).

But it was my very favourite restaurant, it is closing, and tonight was the very last service. It was all quite emotional. I chatted tothe chef/owner and he cried. That made me cry. The staff lined up and hugged us as we left.

This whole lchf woe is a balancing act. We have to make it work alongside real life. Tonight was an example of that. I wouldn't have missed that final service. But I also know that I have to be more cautious for the next few days.

It was chicken with courgettes, leeks, mushrooms and peppers with a splash of cream and chili for dinner. On a bed of rocket for me and on pasta for the rest of the family. But I did have a few nuts in the afternoon. Macadamia are the lowest carb, I think so I’ll try to restrict myself to those.

lastchancesalmon · 01/06/2025 23:39

Starting on a Sunday was a winner - brunch of sausage, bacon, fried egg, mushrooms l, tomato and spinach. Then chicken salad for dinner. I’ve been really busy today doing all the laundry and other chores in prep for starting a new job tomorrow. Feeling pretty good about it but I know it will be a tiring week.

added @LCagain

with many thanks to a benefactor for the gentle reminder :-)

Thank you! I won't participate in the spreadsheet but happy to be joining from today. FFGY & cream on the menu this morning.

FinallyHere · 02/06/2025 06:47

And just like that

@LCagaingone again from the spreadsheet xx

Morning all, away at a festival this weekend so starting today - the options for lc are completely non-existent. The larger festivals have a much wider range of food vendors and veggie/vegan/gf options but absolutely everything comes with rice, pasta or chips. This was a smaller one but next week is the biggie - Wednesday to Monday away so I really need to get my thinking cap on.
I'm the heaviest I remember seeing on the scales for a good few years 😢 but I know that this works if I stick to it. Just had my first cup of herbal tea and about to start unpacking the car and washing! Later will be good shopping and general pottering/tidying that didn't get done over the weekend. Off to catch up now, thank you to @Just4June for running this and @Finallyhere for the spreadsheet.

RockyRogue1001 · 02/06/2025 08:30

Morning all. Depressingly, my weigh in today was pretty much identical to the last BC I started. I seem to lose and gain the same stone and a half - 2 stone or so. But onwards and hopefully downwards. Your meal out sounds freakin' amazing @Just4June and very emotional.
Today is going to be another Greek salad day for me, because we made so much yesterday! Lucky I love it.

prettybird · 02/06/2025 08:33

Signing in at 12st 8lb - not quite as bad as I feared Blush I was over 13st in January but managed to get to under 11.5 stone before going off to Oz in March (with the incentive of the dress I wanted to wear to the wedding Grin).

We’re hoping/planning to go to South Africa again in September, so I’d like to get back under 11.5 stone.

I won’t get a “whoosh” though as I’ve been easing my way back into this WoE.

Really need to work on my water consumption - that’s where I’ve been falling down.

Roast chicken last night was lovely: had mine with asparagus and buttery mange touts. I did also have berries for dessert as ds adores them Wink A few left over which I’ll use to infuse sparkling water and try not to snack on Halo

Just4June · 02/06/2025 10:29

@prettybird I had my woosh last week (one of the benefits of being quite off plan in Italy!) so I expect it will be slow and steady this month.

B - boiled egg, black coffee
L - salad with tuna and avocado
D - duck casserole, mashed turnip, buttery cabbage

Good morning everyone. I weighed in this morning at 80.8kg (177.8lbs) this morning which is my heaviest in a long time. My aim is 75kg but I will be very happy at the end of the month if I hit 77kg.

Breakfast was a coffee with cream, a small bowl of FFGY and two leftover chicken wings from last night's barbecue.

For lunch I am planning a boiled duck egg with grilled eggplant, courgette and pepper.

Dinner will be a beef stroganoff with cauliflower rice.

Hope everyone has a good day

Quashsquash · 02/06/2025 11:56

My sniffles seem to be easing up, though still pretty tired. Breakfast was half an avocado and some FFGY. Lunch will be leftover tray bake chicken and courgettes and I haven’t quite decided on dinner, maybe asparagus with some sliced ham and salad. Olive oil everywhere.

Diligently recording my water - no doubt one can do it without an app, but if there IS an app for that, why not? I use the free version of the Waterllama app, and try to fill up the little llama every day.

CrystalTits · 02/06/2025 13:34

Hi all, thank you so much to @Just4June and @FinallyHere for getting this BC going. I am back on the LC wagon after a winter of pure sugar addiction and gorging myself. I had good success a couple of years ago on bootcamp and reaaaaalllly need to get back on it, it makes me feel so much better about myself. Anyway, onwards - as soon as I weigh myself I'll join the spreadsheet. Am away for a couple of weeks later this month but the change of scene will be just as healthy.

Targets for this week are to drink more water and go to bed earlier to avoid the late night exhaustion-snacking...

Just4June · 02/06/2025 13:41

Welcome @CrystalTits Isn't it strange how even through we know this woe works, we can so easily be tempted back to carbs or sugar. My weaknesses are crisps or toast, so I've only bought dh varieties that I don't like. I also bought one potato for jacket potato and resolutely ignored the Jersey Royals Halo

prettybird · 02/06/2025 13:54

@Just4June- I may already have had my “whoosh” as I sort of started a couple of weeks ago Wink - but I’ll never know as I was refusing to get on the scales Grin because I was in denial Blush

Slow and steady will be fine by me too Halo

YourFairCyanReader · 02/06/2025 15:22

I'm ok with my 3 meals but struggling without fruit already. I always have a piece of fruit at my desk as an afternoon snack. What's your go to snacks?

50FootWave · 02/06/2025 17:31

Hello everyone, have enjoyed reading all the helpful updates.

@YourFairCyanReader for snacks, I'd brought in olives and a FFGY to work, and at home whilst I wait for dinner, I'm having a coffee with a dash of cream. Seems to take the edge off!

Managed 40 minutes in the pool this morning, too. Exercising is never the issue...like @Just4June I'm drawn to toast and crisps!

B: FFGY
L: Prosciutto with olives, piece of cheese.
D: Left over stuffed peppers.

WFH tomorrow so can make sure I have things prepped. I might make something with chicken and leeks for dinner/Weds lunch at work.

Only 1l water today. Managed 2l yesterday but then was up twice in the night! Think I'll need to frontload tomorrow, as I know lots of water is important. @CrystalTits hopefully you're better than me!

50FootWave · 02/06/2025 17:59

Whilst picking up a parcel in Waitrose I grabbed their June food magazine: lots of lc recipes which could v easily work with cheaper supermarket ingredients!

Some delicious looking salads (with fresh fruit, when we're allowed it again).

I love Greek salad - thanks for the inspiration!

prettybird · 02/06/2025 18:19

@YourFairCyanReader- my go-to snacks are too many slices of salami which I shouldn’t really have as they’re processed Blush and slices of emmenthal.

I’ll try to do extra veg and have them for nibbles (eh asparagus spears and buttery mange tout. Ditto when I make leek and shallot frittata, I’ll make big one and have the extra as slices as snacks the following day.

I’ll also make a really big low carb coleslaw and snack on that as it can be nice and crunchy.

YourFairCyanReader · 02/06/2025 19:18

Thank you for the snack suggestions.

I think my 3 meals today total about 32g of carb. Is that about right for the day?

Just4June · 02/06/2025 21:54

@YourFairCyanReader I often have crudities ready in the fridge - sticks of celery, cucumber, pepper or radishes with some kind of dip - guacamole or St Agur creme or the green goddess dip (herbs with feta, ffgy and mayo) https://acultivatedliving.com/recipe/greek-goddess-dip/ acultivatedliving.com/recipe/greek-goddess-dip/]]]] A couple of pieces usually does the trick, I'm often not really hungry but just have a bored mouth and feel snacky.

@YourFairCyanReader re carb counts: We don't generally count carbs on bootcamp, the idea is that we are freed up from weighing and measuring food and counting carbs or calories, and that by following the 10 rules we should be OK. So many people have weighed food and counted calories for years and it's a blessed relief to step back from that obsession.

However, I know it's sometimes helpful to get an idea of whether you're in the right ballpark. 32g carb seems quite low. Different schools of thought count under 100g as low carb, others suggest 50g. NHS diabetes advice suggests 50-130g. It also depends on how many total calories you are eating, I have my mfp macros set to 15% carbs. That gives me plenty of options for a variety of veg, or on bootcamp lite for a few berries and nuts.

Thank you @Just4June - (lack of) willpower is my downfall until I’m in the flow of LC, but I’ve started bringing more of the tempting stuff into work instead of leaving it to call to me from the cupboard 😀

I’ve only recently discovered St Agur Crème and my what a find - are some tonight as a dip for chicken wings, plus a load of salad leaves.

Thanks for those ideas. I reach for the nuts when I’m sick of the computer and need to reach for something else!

Ah yes thanks for the reminder to frontload water - many a night I end up playing catch up with my intake just before bed then seriously regretting it an hour later!

About 2l in today plus a couple of huge cups of tea. I do like a bottle of sparkling from the sodastream in the evening as it feels like a treat, and occasionally throw a couple of drops of angostura bitters in to fake a tonic without the gin <sad face>.

Well done on the swimming too (surely you’ve upped your water via osmosis?!)
