June 2025 Low Carb Bootcamp Week 1

Just4June · 01/06/2025 08:46

Exciting title, I know! It's 1st June, and we're off (although I know many have been following bootcamp rules for a while).

Remember to use your new name, if you changed it=.

Firstly a disclaimer:
The bootcamp threads are a community effort. I, and any of the other MNetters who give advice here, are not medics and we are not qualified in nutrition or dietetics. Recommendations and support are based on our experiences and understanding of low carbing, developed over many years. Before starting, if you are on any kind of long-term medication (especially for high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol), please check with your GP, as the results of low carbing can mean you may need to adjust your dosage. And if you’re pregnant or breast-feeding, we suggest you follow Bootcamp Light. If you have a history of disordered eating, please consider very carefully whether or not this way of eating (WOE) will be in your best interests.

HERE is the new spreadsheet. Thanks @FinallyHere for taking on the technical role again.

If you're not on the spreadsheet and want to be added, message @FinallyHere or add yourself to the bottom of the list. Please don't adjust any of the other cells, except the one for entering your weight. You don't have to be on the spreadsheet to join in with the threads, and if you want to be on the spreadsheet bu don;t want to post your actual weight simply enter 100 in the first column and reduce that by the appropriate amount each week.

I'm starting today, since it's the beginning of a new month, and using this morning's weight, but some like to weigh on a Monday, or a Friday (before the sins of a weekend), or to enter the lowest weight of the week, or an average. Some people weigh every day (I'm a daily weigher), some people once a week, and some people avoid the scales altogether, relying on body measurements and general health and wellbeing.

It is important to be familiar with bootcamp rules, and to know the carb counts in various foods. They are on the tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet. If you've been on bootcamps for years you might want to familiarise yourself with the information - I'd forgotten how carby some nuts are - and if you're new to bootcamp have a good look at all the resources. And ask any questions you want, someone should be able to give you an answer.

Good luck everyone. Here's to an excellent month!

Good luck everyone.

Signing in although as I’ve now had my “breakfast in bed” tea, I’ll only weigh in tomorrow Smile

Ds and his girlfriend are over for supper tonight. I think I’m going to do roast chicken as I know he loves it. Will need to think of something veggie for her.

Just4June · 01/06/2025 09:08

It's important to drink plenty of liquid so I started my day with a big glass of water, followed by a mug of rooibos tea. I usually only have one coffee per day (with a splash of cream) and I'll save that for mid morning. In the summer I don't find it hard to drink plain water, but I sometimes make herbal tea and put it in the fridge. Fresh mint, or lemon and ginger, or twinings raspberry and rose lemonade are my favourites.

Food today:
B - half avocado with a drizzle of olive oil
L - caprese salad (tomatoes, buffalo mozzerella, basil) plus some salad leaves
D - ah, the first day of bootcamp and I'm eating in a restaurant! But I've volunteered to drive, so no alcohol, and I will be able to make good choices from the menu probably scallop to start and beef with veg to follow. Definitely no dessert.

Hello, I'm a BC lurker, is it ok if I join without adding to the spreadsheet please @Just4June ?

Like many others I lost lots of weight in previous bootcamps, but I've not kept all of it off. I'd like to lose 14lb but I'd be happy with 10lb.

Thank you for running this BC Smile

lastchancesalmon · 01/06/2025 09:44

Signing in. Thank you @Just4Juneand @finallyhere for this bootcamp. I’m starting the day with hot water & lemon, which I drink when LC instead of tea and find a good start to the day.

I started following bootcamp rules on 7 May and I’ve lost 8.6lbs so far and 7cms off my waist. My goal for the June camp is to lose 5lbs to bring my total loss to a stone since starting (and before I go on holiday on 29 June). I’ve lost 2 stone on bootcamp before in 2019, so I know it works, and having put most of it back on in the 5 years since and received a prediabetic diagnosis in May, I’m choosing LCHF to improve my health and avoid medication. Good luck everyone, looking forward to sharing meal ideas and supporting each other.

Just4June · 01/06/2025 09:48

@prettybird @Pointy10 @lastchancesalmon welcome!

@Pointy10 just post as much as you want - no need to be on the spreadsheet.

@lastchancesalmon that's great progress in May, and good motivation with your holiday coming up.

Horrible summer cold, in bed, eyes and nose streaming, so not the biggest appetite. Managed some FFGY this morning, and I've already downed a litre of water.

50FootWave · 01/06/2025 10:58

Thanks, @Just4June and @finallyhere - all logged (and measurements taken, too).

Already had a big walk with DP (11k steps), and I'll pop for a swim in the sea later.

Today's food:

B: Eggs (fried) with chilli oil.
L: Stuffed green pepppers with home made bolognaise.
D: Roasted courgetes with feta + rocket.

Lots of water (I am awful at this).

Good luck everyone.

DrBlackbird · 01/06/2025 11:56

I’ve gone FFGY for breakfast but is going to be a killer to stay off nuts for two weeks. They are my guilty pleasure go-to incentive when I’m sick of sitting in front of the computer. Lately I’ve gone right off water so that’ll be a challenge. Leaving it cold in the fridge helps.

Am counting on these threads to get me back into the spirit of LC as a WOE!

edited to say thanks for stuffed peppers idea as I’ve got those ingredients handy. Baked I’m assuming?

Edited

Yes, baked!

I cut them in half, drizzle with olive oil, then bake, curved side up, for 15 minutes. Then flip, stuff, and back in for another 20 or so. Good cold for lunch, too, with some salad.

50FootWave · 01/06/2025 13:35

*Bolognese, of course. :)

Just4June · 01/06/2025 14:23

@Quashsquash hope you feel better soon. Somehow having a cold in the summer always feels rotten - not the winter comfort of wrapping up in a blanket and eating soup.

@50FootWave ooh yes, I've got some bolognese in the freezer, I'll buy some peppers and put that on my meal plan for next week. And there is something I love about cold bolognese or chilli, so I'll make sure to have extras too.

@DrBlackbird I'm another nut lover. I have to count them out. 5 macademias. or 5 walnut halves. 'a small handfull' never turns out to be that small!

Hi, joining in for the chat without being on the spreadsheet. Food today
B- FFGY, creamy coffee
L- ham and cheese roll ups and cucumber
D- FLGV with bolognese
Hoping the chat will help me stay accountable and motivated all the way into the summer. I'm a couple of weeks into lchf already and feeling great.

HazelNotHungryLC · 01/06/2025 15:45

I'm joining in without being on the spreadsheet this time.
We're heading back to the UK for a visit for 10 days next Monday, so I know I'll have a hard time avoiding all the temptations of home!
I'm going to keep checking in on this thread to hopefully stay more on track and make better choices as I can.
Once we're home from our trip I'll be better focused and hopefully reach my goal weight this summer ☀️ 🤞

JumpingintoJune · 01/06/2025 16:01

Signing in , weight entered on spread sheet
I probably won’t be able to start properly until Wednesday ( have a houseful of grown up DC for a family funeral on Tuesday ) will try and be mindful and do my best
Thanks @Just4June and @finallyhere for setting this up

Bonus of having DS here , is that we went out for a 5k run this morning , my best ever ( I’m very slow ) 37 mins 59 seconds , but no walking !

Just4June · 01/06/2025 16:05

@LostaraYil I had ham, cheese and cucumber roll ups yesterday. I butter the cheese for added fat!

@HazelNotHungryLC are there particular temptations? particular food items or certain situations? I sometimes find that anticipating them and planning for them can help me avoid the worst. e.g. family meal out at a pizza place - look at the menu in advance and know that you'll have tomato and mozzarella salad, or a chicken and veg dish; coffee and cake meet up - fill yourself up on higher fat items before you go (eggs, butter/cream coffee, avacado with olive oil). You still might feel tempted but you won't be hungry.

@JumpingintoJune Flowers for Tuesday. Well done on the run!

OP posts:
HazelNotHungryLC · 01/06/2025 16:39

@Just4June yes, definite specific temptations! We cannot find a decent Chinese here (haven't eaten any in many years now) but the best one we eat at every time we visit was our local we ate at every week! Chicken chow mein, for example, just isn't the same here. I will get the duck (nice and fatty) but it's in soy sauce. Then there's the mini doughnuts at the seaside, fish & chips and 99 with a flake..
My body cannot tolerate gluten anymore, so a lot of it should be easy to say no to, especially as symptoms last 3 days usually, but then I'll say it's worth it (it never is) and now it seems half my family has celiac disease, everything will be gluten free (cake anyone?)..

I'm going to make better choices the majority of the time. I do remember the taste of everything so shouldn't have to eat it all, but it will be tough for sure!
I also need to remind myself that being bloated and constipated isn't worth it, ever!

Just4June · 01/06/2025 17:00

@HazelNotHungryLC I have a family member with a peanut allergy. Because it could have such an immediate and potentially catastrophic impact, they avoid anything that might contain nuts or be contaminated. They love crisps but at a buffet would not eat them beacuse of the risk of contamination. They love cake, but never eat one when out for coffee because there are too many surrounding walnut or almond products (although they might have a sneaky kit-kat in their pocket!)

I try to model that behaviour. Sugar and flour is not going to cause me any immediate harm but my blood pressure is so much better on this WOE, and that is a long term health benefit. If my bp spiked immediately I might find it easier to make some of those decisions.

But also sometimes the memory of those foods can be better than the reality (that's certainly what I find with ice cream). Or the smell is better than the taste. I almost swoon when dh makes toast, the smell of it has me craving some. But whenever I do give in I know I find it tasteless and unsatisfying. doesn't stop me giving in sometimes! I've stopped buying him nice bread too, I'm much less tempted by the boring stuff, and he doesn't seem to notice or care much Grin

If you do feel the need to give in, can you stop at a couple of chips? The first 5 are always the best, or a shared doughnut where you have only one tiny bite?

RockyRogue1001 · 01/06/2025 17:21

Hello and thank you for this @Just4June and @FinallyHere
I was on the last thread, but not much. I did ask if I could be on the spreadsheet. Totally understand that got missed because it was a few weeks ago.
I've started today, but was away yesterday so couldn't weigh this morning. Today is a Greek salad day. Delicious 😋

Good luck to everyone

FinallyHere · 01/06/2025 17:49

Added you @RockyRogue1001with apologies for missing you in the first place.

love that user name 😎

FinallyHere · 01/06/2025 18:04

added @LCagain

with many thanks to a benefactor for the gentle reminder :-)

HazelNotHungryLC · 01/06/2025 20:25

@Just4June that is what I'm aiming for, just a bite or two. I know I'll feel better the less I have. It's going to be hard though, it's been 7 years since I've been back! You are also very right about the memory and smell being better than the actual taste.

CleanQueen123 · 01/06/2025 21:27

I'm technically staring Tuesday but I did some prep this afternoon. I've got my boiled eggs, cooked chicken and roasted veg ready in the fridge along with more salad and veg than I know what to do with 😂

Rayna37 · 01/06/2025 21:45

Decent start made, after weighing in far higher than I’d like after half term. Realise now the cashews I ate should have been off limits though! Glad it’s asparagus season and we all enjoyed a Caesar salad in place of a roast. First time cooking a whole chicken in the air fryer- big success!

Aiming for 10-14lbs off by August.

Just4June · 01/06/2025 22:44

@CleanQueen123 ha ha I get that too, I overplan and buy every veg and salad item then wonder what I'm going to do with them! Veg omelette for breakfast is one answer. Then veg soup for lunch.

@Rayna37 good to see you again. Cashews (the carbiest of nuts!) - as many carbs as potatoes, and easier to eat a massive amount!
