Jan '23 Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 2 - how did you get on?!

BIWI · 15/01/2023 23:00

Evening all! I'm posting the week 2 chat thread this evening, as I know how keen everyone will be to post tomorrow. As I'm retired now, I no longer have to set an alarm to wake up, so I don't want to keep everyone waiting tomorrow morning to post.

I love this week. It's when we see how much people have lost, and it can be a significant amount. It can be a real leap of faith for anyone who hasn't low carbed before, and all those who really don't believe you can eat that much fat and still lose weight!

I'm really hoping that you've all had a good first week, and that your commitment 'to the cause' has been rewarded with a good result - be that on the scales, with your tape measure, or the currently-too-tight clothes that you've been trying on.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

I hope very much that you've had a good first week, and that you're feeling supermotivated for the rest of Bootcamp.

However - if you haven't lost, or you have even gained, please don't be downhearted. We're all different, and there may be lots of reasons why this is the case for you. It's also really important to note that it's not a competition. We all lose at different rates - plus, anyone who is bigger will lose more/faster than someone who is smaller.

Hopefully there are other benefits to this WOE that will keep you on track - at the very least, I hope that you have been enjoying the food, and that you don't feel deprived, like you would be on a low calorie/fat diet.

keytotic? What does that mean?!

If you mean do we use ketostix, then no we don't. If you're drinking the amount of water that you should be, then the ketostix won't register very pink.

Yes, I checked mine in work out of curiosity. I drink 3-4 litres a day, always have done...

Andi2020 · 17/01/2023 22:57

@BIWI well done to you on your size 10's and @FinallyHere on your size 8's
So cold here with snow so not getting all my water but taken more ginger tea so probably getting it through that.
I would love to loose more weight from tummy area but it seems to come of my face and makes my face thin and wrinkly.
Any tips

MaryDoll84 · 17/01/2023 23:05

@BIWI @FinallyHere Well done on the NSV's. Nothing more motivating than going down a size. I've always wanted to strut my stuff in a pair of leather look leggings but I've never felt svelte enough. Let's face it, they're not the most forgiving choice of pants😁.
My goal every year is to be able to wear denim cut offs in Summer and this will be the year dammit! I'm not getting any younger so I feel like it's now or never.

BIWI · 17/01/2023 23:07

You see, I always look at those leather jeggings and just think 'thrush' Grin

@MuthaHubbard if this is all you had to eat:
B - greek yoghurt and cream
L - celery with pate
D - ham wrapped around cheese and a bit more yoghurt afterwards
It don't think it is enough! You need to eat properly, you need many more veg. Really, MUCH more food, MUCH more veg.

Lovely to hear of smaller jeans up and better skin, congrats to you!! FlowersStar

I'm doing spine strengthening yoga and today felt stronger, and an hours walk today. Very pleased to be feeling the inner buzz.

@MrsTaytodarling I do measure ketones with a finger prick monitor but only when I'm fighting cravings and getting the numbers up if I've slipped up. When I discovered ketogenic eating I had no support network so the monitor helped me keep going. I tested this week, 3 times before eating at 2pm -0.6, 0.9 and 1.3 so no more tests now as I know I'm nicely in ketosis. Anyway the strips for my monitor are an expense and I've only a few left. I do measure glucose with the same monitor and they're easy come by (the strips) and I love the science of it. That said I'm a weigh every day person (actually at night and the morning) so please take the above in that context. Lots of things in my house have labels, tidy mess, like me!

TigerYiger · 17/01/2023 23:20

Also, I'm on it with the sauerkraut recipe, haven't forgotten my promise, it'll be a few days as I'm taking pictures.

DontGetEvenGetEverything · 18/01/2023 05:57

I had a dream I found a dark chocolate with only 8.9g carbs per 100g 😂 😋

MotherBuckets · 18/01/2023 06:08

Looking forward to the good sleep kicking in, been awake since 4am <ugh> I usually manage to go back to sleep eventually if I'm awake in the middle of the night but have given up and got a cup of tea. Just hope I'm far enough in to resist the tired toast cravings that'll be headed my way...

BonnieBairn · 18/01/2023 06:26

@MotherBuckets I feel your pain with the insomnia. Mine is chronic, I think that's where I put most of my weight on, midnight snacking.

Just made my breakfast and lunch for the day.
B:FFGY
L: salad with avo and tuna with olive oil.
D: undecided, I think fried cod and chorizo with buttery greens.

StuntNun · 18/01/2023 06:34

@TigerYiger the blood ketone measurements are reliable and are fine to use (although you don't need to be in deep ketosis to lose weight.) It's the urine ketostix that aren't particularly accurate.

Veryfishy · 18/01/2023 06:49

Awful nights sleep , took ages to go off to sleep , and now at 6 -45 am I’m on my second coffee on the sofa watching breakfast tv with a big blanket and hot water bottle ( the heating isn’t on yet ) I’m retired , so this isn’t fair .😡

Powdering of snow and 2°c here , though it usually gets colder around 8am

Not a good days food yesterday , had a shopping and lunch day with my sister and chose cauliflower fritters for lunch , had visions of chunky cauliflower florets in batter that I would scrape off , on a bed of salad with yoghurt dressing
What I has looked like onion bhajis on a pool of yoghurt with chopped tomatoes and about 3 pea shoots
Had a buttery chicken breast with a massive stir fry of Cavolo Nero , leeks, mushrooms , shallots and a bit of carrot for dinner

I’ve started doing a plank every morning and evening ( have a vague memory of a plank challenge going in a past Bootcamp ? Might be from somewhere else though ) as I have a desire to have a waist again , hopefully by August as I have a nice holiday planned , it’s 34 at the moment which needs to change

Nugg · 18/01/2023 07:14

Morning all

Firstly great news on the size 10s @BIWI 🎉

I found lots of 12s when I had my post Christmas clear out, they look the width of my thigh right now...! But I've been there before so I will again!

Made lasagne using courgette strips and a Greek yoghurt white sauce last night for the first time and it was soooo lovely! Must preferred to the pasta version - my usually unfussy son had a separate one, not doing that every time so won't make it when he's there!

MuthaHubbard · 18/01/2023 07:35

@venusandmars yeah, really not sure what was up with me yesterday - not the norm!! I'd had loads of chicken, veg, whole packet of prawns etc etc the day before! Hopefully just a blip.

Planning scrambled eggs and mushrooms for breakfast, potentially tuna salad for lunch then either curry, Cajun or stir fry for tea (with chicken or pork).

Brassbumblebee · 18/01/2023 08:02

Morning all.

Had a good sleep last night, although I struggled to get to sleep at first because I had restless legs. This has happened a few times now when low carbing and to settle it i take a multivitamin then I'm asleep within half an hour. I read somewhere that restless legs can be a sign of magnesium deficiency and well, because I know my multivitamin has magnesium in it I take one and it works! Is there anything else I could or should be doing for this? I do have the electrolytes but didnt want to have a big glass of water before bed.

Not sure what my meals today will be but I had plenty to choose from so I will post meal plan later.

I'm loving this the days are just flying by and I don't feel deprived at all!
KOKO everyone!

Greatly · 18/01/2023 08:03

Morning all. I'm struggling this time around. I'm doing dry January and oddly finding that very easy so far.

Haven't eaten off plan and don't intend to as I genuinely like BC food. But have lost a tiny amount of weight - 2lbs total this morning - and have had a lot of bloating which is unusual.
Yesterday
B - creamy coffee and gy
L - chicken breast fried in oo and butter with spinach broccoli and cream with cheese
D - cottage pie with celeriac mash (never bothered with this before and it was delicious) broccoli

Not needed to snack at all

Today
Two fried eggs and gy

L - leftover cottage pie
D - salmon spinach cream bake w courgettes

littleegghead · 18/01/2023 08:23

Morning all. @Brassbumblebee I've been struggling with sleeping too this past week which is most unlike me, I will have to find some magnesium and give that a try.

Had a weigh this morning and my gain has gone and I'm back to where I was before which is nice to see. I need to do some meal planning and write down some of the ideas on this thread for next week, I don't mind eating the same thing over and over but DH does (we're having the same meals but he's adding bread/potatoes for his portion).

Work also sent us all a huge box of retro sweets as a Blue Monday gift thing so I need to get them out of the house, my nephew will be happy 😂

LittleMy77 · 18/01/2023 08:24

Made shepherds pie last night with leftover lamb shoulder, and shoved chipotle chilli paste in the sauce which was a game changer. Had swede and carrot mash on top. Dh I are were fighting over seconds!

am finding this week v hard for some reason; am not shifting weight yet and feel wrung out, I imagine it’s me getting used to it, I think I was lulled into a false sense of security of feeling fine last week! There’s lots of crappy stuff going on at work atm which may be contributing, as a Im a stress / emotional eater.
B; yoghurt
L; leftover cauliflower cheese and tbc
D; salmon and roast veg; might try courgettes in cream sauce if I can figure it out

amigababy · 18/01/2023 08:26

Woohoo! My first weigh in, a couple of days late, but... 6.8 pounds lost.
I'm totally shocked. And happy.
(It's cheered me up as Monday was a stressful day, I had a bit of a meltdown.)

We went shopping yesterday too, so I'm all stocked up for another good week.

@Brassbumblebee I love a good magnesium supplement, I had one last night to help me sleep, and it worked.

BonnieBairn · 18/01/2023 08:32

@Brassbumblebee iron deficiency can also cause restless legs so maybe worth taking an iron supplement. Don't take it at the same time as caffeine and dairy as that can hinder absorption. Hope you find something to help, restless legs are awful. @BIWI and @FinallyHere well done on the NSV! Must feel so good!

AllTheBlackCoffee · 18/01/2023 09:25

Morning everyone.

Not long back from my PT session after a treacherous journey there and back. Seems like the gritters didn’t get the memo round here and the roads are awful.

Today’s plan:
B: beautiful buttery creamy scrambled eggs
L: I have meetings so DH is in charge of stuffed mushrooms and salad
D: halloumi bake - it’s a Fast 800 recipe but we’ll ignore the minuscule portion sizes

Feel like I’ve been eating far too much meat recently so a bit of a veggie day for us won’t hurt.

FinallyHere · 18/01/2023 09:31

doing a plank every morning and evening

I'm liking the idea of a bootcamp 'plank' challenge, thank you very much @Veryfishy It's a yoga thing for me so very possibly a modified version of what other people call a plank. On my elbows and toes, for a start.

SpottyBumPony · 18/01/2023 09:34

Waves at everybody, I've been reading but don't think I've posted for a few days. I hurt my back on Sunday evening leaning over the bed to cuddle DS of all things.

Monday I had a delicious dinner of turkey burgers, dirty celeriac fries (thanks to the OP) and lashings of mayo.

Yesterday I made cream of broccoli and Stilton soul, then added frozen spinach and Leftover shoogled cabbage. Its very green and very lovely.

Today is
Avocado with a squirt of lemon
Green soup with a mushroom patty
Tandoori chicken with cauli rice and another veg
