Jan 2023 Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 1!

Welcome everyone! We have over 160 people signed up this time, so things are going to move quickly.

Here's the link to The Spreadsheet of Fabulousness which has been carefully and lovingly curated by the very lovely @FinallyHere

There are a few bits of admin that I need to post before we get going. The first of which is the usual disclaimer:

I am not a medic, a scientist, a dietician or a nutritionist. Everything that I post here is based on my reading and my own experiences of low carbing gained over the last 20 years. You follow the guidance here at your own risk - although I very much hope that there are no risks!

Very importantly, though, if you are on any kind of long-term medication, please talk to your GP/nurse about low carbing. This is especially important if you're on drugs for hypertension, cholesterol and/or diabetes, as a low carb diet should have a positive impact on all of those conditions, which would mean that your dosage may need to be decreased, if not removed altogether.

The second is about etiquette:

Please, please, please read all the posts on the thread before you make your own post. These threads work so much better when we're all here interacting with each other, as that means we can offer help and support when it's needed. Don't just jump on the thread to plop down your meals for the day, your weight that day and then just fuck off. That doesn't help anyone.

More than anything else, it's incredibly irritating when someone posts a question which has already been answered early in the thread. I, and lots of other Bootcampers, spend a considerable amount of time responding to people's questions and concerns, and it's pretty insulting when it's obvious that these haven't been read.

(Oh, and it's very obvious if you haven't read the thread, so take that as a warning Wink)

Hi all! Thanks guys for the set up - am updated on the spreadsheet and off to a slow start with buttery, cheesy scrambled egg for breakfast and 1l water down.

subway salad for lunch (really annoying that their mayo is light! But making up for it in olives and grated cheese)

dinner tonight is Cajun bacon and chicken with buttery green veg

Mercedesbenz2022 · 09/01/2023 12:50

I want to lose 10lb that will get me back to my (still fat ) pre March 2020 weight ,ie pre pandemic , but it will be a good start , plus it will take me down into the next stone

a lot more than that to lose but focusing on that first

good luck everyone
my halo is shining today as I refused toast this morning from dp

TigerYiger · 09/01/2023 12:52

@Veryfishy nothing sounds odd when you start the description with buttery... !Grin

Lovely group, my intention is to get back into ketosis properly and drop a stone in the camp - 19lbs if the keto faeries love me.

These two week starter weeks for me mean a pledge from me here to have no cream or cheese. These are definitely a problem and definitely what the extra me is made of.

Wishing you all a lovely day 1, thanks to our organisers Smile

Afternoon all. It’s good to hear everyone’s starting points and motivations and plans. I’m quite hefty currently but low carbing has worked wonders for me before, and I’ve got a holiday in 8 weeks, so that’s what I’m aiming for. I’m also looking forward to sleeping better, feeling calmer and having better skin and less creaky joints. Just enjoyed fried chicken and coriander salad for lunch and caught up on the thread. Now to crack on with an afternoon of sipping water!

NotDonna · 09/01/2023 12:56

@smorgs one of my DDs is very very low weight. A side effect of adhd meds unfortunately. It’s tricky isn’t it? I make tons of pasta, risotto, puddings & snacks (heavy carb & fat combo) in an effort to feed her up so I know what you mean. DH made a big lasagne & a big shepherds pie yesterday for my 3DDs packed lunches, so for dinners (this week at least) I’ll cook a main like a stew or curry or whatever but with mine they’ll be tons of leafy veg and with theirs some veg but also creamy, buttery mash or rice and a pudding. Interestingly, since pre-Xmas bootcamp it doesn’t bother me. The look of pasta or potatoes or rice just doesn’t interest me. Puddings however require a fair amount of willpower!

NotDonna · 09/01/2023 12:59

@TigerYiger cream and cheese are fine! Just carbs we are avoiding. Fats are good.

adviceatthislatestage · 09/01/2023 13:00

Hi everyone

Have just added my details to the spreadsheet. Came as a shock as to how much I weigh- think I've been in denial the past few months and used Christmas as an excuse to eat what ever I wanted.

So really looking forward to this boot camp.

Aim to check in daily to keep me focussed . Even if just to list what I've eaten and pick up other food ideas. Or else I'll get in a rut.

Water intake increasing slowly.

UnfinishedBusiness · 09/01/2023 13:05

@QforCucumber cajun chicken and bacon sounds good. is there a recipe you could share please?

LittleMy77 · 09/01/2023 13:10

Looking forward to getting back on it - I've banged on 13lbs that I lost last BC, although I'm not still quite as heavy when I started almost 2 years back!

Have prepped the staples of my main sides / lunch meals to have in the fridge; no flour cauliflower cheese, swede and carrot mash (light on the carrot) celeriac and chorizo soup, veg soup, and am going to have a stab at making cheese crisps later.

Stocked up on halloumi, spinach and avocado - altho getting avocados that aren't bashed to bits, is getting increasingly difficult (I know, it's hardly the end of the world Grin) we're really struggling to get eggs atm, especially ones that don't cost a fortune. May have to try and come up with something else for breakfast / lunch

Passtheturkey · 09/01/2023 13:12

My plan to prep went astray as I’ve broken my collar bone so am at the mercy of DHs shopping and cooking. Salad and ham for lunch.

I’ve been doing BC lite since the pre Christmas BC so have stuck to IF which means I don’t have to think about one meal risking the big stick.

Keep it up all!

QforCucumber · 09/01/2023 13:12

@UnfinishedBusiness erm not really 😂 I fry diced bacon and a butterfly chicken breast in butter in my cast iron frying pan until golden, lift out and pour in ‘some’ chicken stock and some double cream with a couple of tsp of Cajun spices, simmer until thickened - pour over the chicken and bacon. Served with usually leeks and green cabbage

TigerYiger · 09/01/2023 13:13

Thanks @NotDonna, I'm a long way in to low carb and this is the way many of us go, sadly. (I don't swig cream at midnight, oh no no I! Blush) x

Smorgs · 09/01/2023 13:17

Hi @NotDonna yes that's exactly our situation, ADHD meds cutting appetite, along with some serious fussiness over eating certain vegetables, food in sauce, fish.... and they weren't huge beforehand either. Have even considered smuggling protein powder into their food. Tricky isn't it?

amigababy · 09/01/2023 13:19

A very basic start to the day
B: Greek yoghurt and a soya latte
L: Boiled eggs

And now to go shopping and get more interesting food for the rest of the week.

Dh wants to give up bread and cake etc. This is good news (for the shopping). He loves his potatoes though, he'll still have those but at least there'll be less carbs in the house.

Janieread · 09/01/2023 13:26

A random lunch!

Microwaved brussels with butter and cheese
an almond flour mug bread are we allowed those?
A gherkin!

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 09/01/2023 13:26

Thanks for the spreadsheet which I've duly filled in.
I'm keeping a note on my phone of how much water I'm drinking - 1.6 litres out of 2.5 so far.

ZiggZagg · 09/01/2023 13:27

My first aim is to reduce my finger size so I can wear my DM's wedding ring that she gave me after my DF passed away, I've had it stretched but still too snug and I'm not getting it stretched any further! It was my uncles then passed on to mum after he passed away so oh great sentimental value.

Good going today, distracting myself from work on here so need to focus 🤣

For those tea lovers who don't like black tea, I find earl grey much easier to drink without milk.

Not for the first two weeks! Any chance you could post the recipe in two weeks time?

prettybird · 09/01/2023 13:37

Logging in today at 11st 13.5lb - up 4.75lb from where I'd got to on Christmas Eve, but down c4lb from the highest I'd got to with the Christmas excesses Xmas Blush - and that's with only half following Boot Camp Light the last few days Wink

My target this Boot Camp is to get back to my lowest in recent years, which was 11st 1.75lb for Christmas 2019. I'd like to get below 11st by my birthday (early April) and below 10st 9lb by our 25th Wedding Anniversary in mid May. FlowersSmile

The immediate short term goal is to get back to 3 digits: ie under 11st 10lb.

Off to drink some water Grin

prettybird · 09/01/2023 13:40

@Janieread - in Boot Camp, we call brussels microwaved with butter, due to the Scottish Wink technical term Wink shoogle they get half way through the microwaving Grin

Jenasaurus · 09/01/2023 13:43

I love Brussel Sprouts! I used to also cook a whole cabbage and add butter and salt to it in my teens, my friends thought I was mad

Janieread · 09/01/2023 13:44

Hopeislost · 09/01/2023 13:36

Yes of course
Whoops sorry dodges big stick

Veryfishy · 09/01/2023 13:44

@Jenasaurus
buttery scrambled eggs recipe

In a non stick saucepan melt a large knob of butter , add 2 beaten eggs , add salt add freshly ground black pepper
Just stir gently over a medium heat
The trick is to take it off the heat before it’s cooked completely, as it will carry on cooking in its own heat , and in my opinion , it’s much nicer soft and a bit runny , not a solid lump
I added slices of avo as I took the pan off the heat

I love salt crystals , so I sprinkle some over the top

all you need is butter and eggs , seasoning , though snipped chives sound a good addition

Janieread · 09/01/2023 13:45

The gherkin was a sugar free one I hasten to add (mrs ellwood Haimisha gherkins - god they are good)
