Jan 2023 Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 1!

Welcome everyone! We have over 160 people signed up this time, so things are going to move quickly.

Here's the link to The Spreadsheet of Fabulousness which has been carefully and lovingly curated by the very lovely @FinallyHere

There are a few bits of admin that I need to post before we get going. The first of which is the usual disclaimer:

I am not a medic, a scientist, a dietician or a nutritionist. Everything that I post here is based on my reading and my own experiences of low carbing gained over the last 20 years. You follow the guidance here at your own risk - although I very much hope that there are no risks!

Very importantly, though, if you are on any kind of long-term medication, please talk to your GP/nurse about low carbing. This is especially important if you're on drugs for hypertension, cholesterol and/or diabetes, as a low carb diet should have a positive impact on all of those conditions, which would mean that your dosage may need to be decreased, if not removed altogether.

The second is about etiquette:

Please, please, please read all the posts on the thread before you make your own post. These threads work so much better when we're all here interacting with each other, as that means we can offer help and support when it's needed. Don't just jump on the thread to plop down your meals for the day, your weight that day and then just fuck off. That doesn't help anyone.

More than anything else, it's incredibly irritating when someone posts a question which has already been answered early in the thread. I, and lots of other Bootcampers, spend a considerable amount of time responding to people's questions and concerns, and it's pretty insulting when it's obvious that these haven't been read.

(Oh, and it's very obvious if you haven't read the thread, so take that as a warning Wink)

Morning all!

I've weighed in and added my numbers to the spread sheet. I'm 13.6st! 😱 I cant believe it but it should come as no surprise after indulging on everything for almost a month 🙄 oh well, I've made a start now.

I've been out on a walk for an hour which was nice, it's a beautiful morning here today.

B: 10% fat yogurt
L: garlic and cream cheese stuffed mushrooms with green beans
D: chicken leg and buttery kale.

Water has been measured and I'll drink it throughout the day. I love water so will have no problems with that although I need to remember to drink the majority of it earlier in the day so I'm not waking up to pee all night!

Good luck everyone!

AllTheBlackCoffee · 09/01/2023 10:13

We're almost starting weigh twins @Brassbumblebee !! I'm just a pound heavier than you. How tall are you? I'm only 5ft 3.5 so feel huge at the minute but I've already done a week so lord knows what my real staring weight was. My ultimate goal is 9 1/2 stone but first things first, I'm shooting for the 12s.

moleeye · 09/01/2023 10:19

Morning all! Back again and determined to stick to this for the long haul.

I'm up and down all the time, and I'm T2 diabetic. I'm 5,7 so I can carry quite a fair bit, but it's taking it toll and the docs have changed my meds and given me yet another stern talking to as my bloods aren't improving. Im 43 (yesterday!) with a pre schooler and a primary aged child and need to give myself a real arse kicking!!

Anyway I've weighed in, meal planned for today and tomorrow, and am in the right frame of mind. OH is doing this with me which helps massively (he's also weighing on a Monday!)

I'll check in regularly as I need to maintain focus and I find this keeps me honest...

Good luck all! KOKO

SamWales · 09/01/2023 10:21

Morning all,
I am new here but glad for the company! I have added myself to the spreadsheet and ready to do this. You all seem a positive bunch and I think that will really help each other :)
I am so glad to be with you all on this bootcamp..

BrieOurGuest · 09/01/2023 10:24

Hi all
I am several stone overweight at the moment, so very motivated to kick 2023 off with some healthier choices. I've lost a lot of weight in the past with low carbing, before a bereavement knocked me off track, so I know this way of eating can work wonders without leaving me feeling deprived of tasty food. It's just getting back into the swing of it I find challenging, (and doing it properly with lots of green veggies rather than just eating my bodyweight of chicken wings, bacon and cheese)

I had planned an eggy breakfast for this morning but couldn't face it in the end - so turned to leftovers and enjoyed a small plate of stewed beef and brussel sprouts at 9.30am! That was meant to be my dinner, so I do need to change the meal plan around a bit now.

Good tip about the elastic bands on the water bottle, I have a LOT to get through, I will give that a try.

BrendaLee · 09/01/2023 10:28

I have 4 stone to lose - 2023 is the year to do it!
Can I ask if coconut milk is ok? I use a lot of it (at least one meal a week) and just wondering if I need to find alternatives!

earlyraisin · 09/01/2023 10:29

Place marking for later

StuntNun · 09/01/2023 10:37

@BrendaLee coconut milk as a drink is usually pretty carby but check labels as most dairy alternative milks have unsweetened options. If it's coconut milk from a can for e.g. curries then, again, check labels as different brands vary hugely. Coconut cream might be a better alternative.

Morning all, ready to start again here. I joined in November but failed instantly and have added an extra 2kg as a result. I'm now the heaviest I've been so am determined to make this one count. I'm aiming to lose 7kg or around a stone. Have a nice holiday planned in April with friends I haven't seen for 25 years so would love to be nearer my former self by then.

I have a big shop coming tomorrow with lots of fresh veg, fish and chicken which I'm very excited about.

Menu plan today is
Breakfast - Greek yoghurt with double cream
Lunch - boiled Eggs with butter and Boursin and salad
Supper - sausages (not ideal but it's all we have in) with some spicy cabbage and spinach

Drinking herbal tea & water

katesbushh · 09/01/2023 10:39

Morning

I've weighed and I can confirm I am the heaviest I have ever been.
It seems quite the task at the moment. Not sure if I'll ever lose it all.
5 stone (potentially 6) but I'll reassess.

I can't load the spreadsheet at the moment. I'll try again when I get home.

katesbushh · 09/01/2023 10:41

I've just been to collect my new water bottle/tumbler.
Holds just shy of 2lts and is insulated so I can put ice in too. I find water much easier to drink when it is very cold.
2 of those a day. I'll never get of the toilet haha.

Veryfishy · 09/01/2023 10:44

I’ve just learnt how to bookmark !
started the day with buttery scrambled eggs , with avocado ( strange sounding combo , but it works )
2 big glasses of water down
I forgot to measure , but I did weigh in … not good , but will be better next Monday

FancyFelix · 09/01/2023 10:44

I'm weighed in, full of buttery boiled eggs, and back on the almond milk in my coffee 🤢. I will get used to it.

2 glasses of water down and I have halloumi and sprouts planned for lunch.

Good luck everyone, we've got this.

Smorgs · 09/01/2023 11:01

Hello, thanks to @BIWI and @FinallyHere for organising us all.
I joined the leaving lockdown bootcamp in early 2021 after already losing quite a bit on a low-carb eating plan but unfortunately the weight has crept back on after a bereavement. Looking at my chart on MyFitnessPal was a wake up call yesterday - all the weight has come back on since my father died in October 2021. However, if I've done it before it can be done again right? So I have logged everything honestly on the spreadsheet of fabulousness and am thinking positively.
From memory my daily meals were: two boiled eggs for breakfast, mixed salad with tinned smoked mackerel for lunch, or soup, and either fish or chicken with all the green veg for dinner.
I remember finding it difficult making meals for the whole family as we tend to eat pasta, risotto etc quite a bit (and I have two DC who are underweight for medical reasons so I really need to feed them up) but I have resolved to just make a separate meal for me, it shouldn't be too difficult.
That's all - just to say thank you for not starting this in early Jan as I live in France so starting now meant I could indulge in all the galette des rois before changing my eating!

venusandmars · 09/01/2023 11:08

Lovely to see the determination and enthuiasm on here. I've managed to put on 2 stones over a 4 year period. Somehow half a stone more from the beginning of one year to the end doesn't feel too awful but it has all added up. I'm quite short with a slender frame so it doesn't sit well on me and my clothes are all too tight. I've got a holiday booked with family and friends in September and I'm determind to be a lot lighter and a lot fitter by then and this bootcamp will be where it all starts.

Breakfast today was avocado with evoo and grated cheese. Lunch will be very green spinach soup and dinner is left over slow cooked ham with buttery cauliflower and cabbage. Thanks for the reminders about water, off to get some now.

NotDonna · 09/01/2023 11:12

water, water!
Im going to boast that I’ve consumed 2 litres (peppermint tea in my water bottle) now at the car wash and desp for a wee. Pelvic floor getting a work out.

I'm 5"6" and I'm quite heavy built so I seem to carry weight better. My ideal weight is around 11st, any lighter than that I just look ill really but I'd love to get closer to 12st by the end of this bootcamp.
Past experience tells me I'll drop quite a lot this week then itll be a steady 1-2lbs after that so its possible! 🤞

prettybird · 09/01/2023 11:30

For those that are potentially discouraged by the amount that they've got to lose, one BootCamper (and I always forget who it was Blush) told the story about a boss of hers who, when she didn't want to do an extra qualification (I think) because of the time it would take (a couple of years iirc), pointed out that whether or not she did it, the years would go by anyway, so why not spend them doing it. I came across this meme recently that expresses a similar sentiment Flowers

Jan 2023 Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 1!
OldandTired66 · 09/01/2023 11:31

First timer here though I did Atkins back in the day and lost about a stone and a half in about 2 months. But never felt well on it. I'm hoping unlimited veg will help this time. My weight in pounds is a very big number 😳. Bacon and egg for breakfast, Veg soup with extra cheese for lunch and Salmon and steamed cauli / brocolli with butter and sea salt for dinner. Got in extra eggs for snacking only to find rest of family have gone 'Ooh, eggs' and scoffed most of them 🙄. Need my own fridge... I'm going to write out the list of food I can eat and stick it on the fridge.

Jenasaurus · 09/01/2023 11:44

Good Luck everyone and thank you @BIWI for starting this Bootcamp.

Omelette for breakfast for me today
Not sure what I will be having for lunch yet, was going to have steak and salad but not really in the mood for it.

Pleased to report my fibre gel is working! Much needed as I am not going to have my porridge anymore and was already constipated! So now I have discovered something that works, I will have a sachet before bed :) Sorry if TMI

Have a good day all

Please can I ask your recipe for buttery scrambled eggs, sounds lovely, when I stayed with my son they made amazing eggs with cream, chives and I think something else, never been able to recreate it

I remember doing Atkins too, as you say it was successfull whilst on it but missing out on long term maintenance. Unlimited veg will certainly help, I have sprouts with everything!

WOW well done, I have only managed 1/4 of that but have to pop out and no loos on route, will guzzle more water when I get back. I ordered Chelsea Peers PJs and velour jumpsuit in the sale and they sent it to a post office a 40 min walk from me! Not a bad idea to walk it but I am meant to be working and that is 80 mins out of my working day, I will work later to make up the time, hope these PJs are worth it!

averywittyusername · 09/01/2023 12:30

Thanks organisers! I need this.. going on holiday end of February so I need to undo the Christmas pounds. I'm pledging to lose 10 lbs by then.

Strangely, I'd never tried black tea before and I love it 😀 a first-day win!

UnfinishedBusiness · 09/01/2023 12:30

Morning, just checking in. Thank you for the thread and spreadsheet.

I’ve weighed and horrified myself, generally eat lower carb, but have gone a bit nuts over Christmas and new year as a break, and that really piled on a good few pounds😳 Not helped by the fact I’ve barely left home for the duration.

So, my plan is stick rigidly to boot camp, and aim to get in 10,000 steps per day for the remainder of January (and hopefully role those on to the rest of the year).

B: scrambled eggs
L: salad with cheese
D: gammon, homemade coleslaw, and broccoli and bacon salad.

Also, thanks folks for reminding me about water intake, I’m a bit rubbish at that, I’m off to fill up a water bottle.
