Week 2 - pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp

Morning campers!

This is my favourite week of a new Bootcamp. Because for all those new to low carbing, and especially those who were so fearful about the amount of fat they're supposed to be eating, this can be a real revelation.

It's often a real leap of faith to commit to a way of eating which is against everything we've been told, for the last 30 or 40 years, is bad for us. And yet, all the recent science confirms that lowering our carbohydrate intake can only be good for us - and that embracing fat is also good too!

Here's a link to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

I look forward, very much, to seeing results of the first week. Somehow, from what people have already posted, I think it's going to be good!

Well done on everyone's losses!

I've lost 4.4lb so very pleased!

MerylSqueak · 25/10/2021 09:28

Thank you for the new thread and the recipe @BIWI. Thank you to everyone who posts recipes in fact. I find it really helpful.

About a kilo off. My main aim this week is to cook more. I'm very off it at the moment.

Can anyone help me navigate a Chinese takeaway for low carb? It's dh's 50th today but as he has Covid we're limited to celebrating with this. I'm thinking maybe just picking the meat out, although the sauces all seem pretty carby. I cannot be a killjoy, though, as this is a rare treat for us so I have to find something I don't have to pick about with too much.

BIWI · 25/10/2021 09:30

Is the takeaway online @MerylSqueak? If so, post their menu and let's see if we can help you.

Starting the week 4lb down which I am pretty happy about, after a big fall-off-the-wagon episode on Saturday Blush. My usual reporting day was always Friday to give me a chance to wee out the weekend's indiscretions, but having to weigh in this morning stopped me having a sneaky glass / bottle of wine last night and I feel much better for it.

Kids are off this week which is usually a cue for me to drink every night and eat toast with gay abandon, so this boot camp has come at the perfect time. Really REALLY need to do it properly. Tried on my winter coat yesterday and it is too tight round my bum

ditavonteesed · 25/10/2021 09:34

Wow some amazing losses, well done everyone.
2.8lb down for me putting me nearer the bottom than the top of my happy range so very pleased.
Planned day of pottering in the garden and duck breasts for dinner.

@MerylSqueak when I was in this position about 6 months ago I went for chicken egg foo yung. Apart from the egg and chicken the only other ingredients (I could see) were spring onions and bean sprouts.

NotwatchingSpooks · 25/10/2021 09:42

Morning, 3lbs off for me which I am very pleased with, onwards and downwards ….

I’m sure that planting 500 bulbs helped as it definitely stopped me snacking 😀

MerylSqueak · 25/10/2021 09:46

Thank you@catwithflowers

Chicken balls from the started and black pepper roast pork looks possible.

sheepdreams · 25/10/2021 09:48

Oh BIWI so sorry it’s been a manic week I’ve recently moved house and just back on nightshift🙁. Lost only 1lb bit sticking with it with note to self to be more organised this week.

BIWI · 25/10/2021 09:50

The only thing about the chicken balls @MerylSqueak is that it's difficult to know if they're battered. Unless you've had them before?

I'd probably go for a satay dish as a starter (hopefully it's meat on a skewer rather than just in a whole puddle of sauce), then for your main choose one of the dishes with ginger and spring onions. There are lots of dishes that sound like they might be OK, but it's really difficult to tell how they've been made, i.e. how much flour/cornflour might have been used to thicken a sauce, and how much sugar will have been added.

Obviously you need to avoid rice and noodles, but also avoid anything with pancakes, anything described as 'crispy' and also anything with cashews.

I'd also supplement my main with stir-fried veg or beansprouts.

Above all though, enjoy your meal and the occasion. These events will always happen, and sometimes you just have to go with it!

Yay, 2lb off for me which I am pleased with given that I am moving from BC lite (ahem possibly medium) to full BC and also like @Aderyn21 I am on my first month of HRT and have just started my period.

Good luck with the running everyone :-) It's a good bug to catch. I run so slowly that I don't think I burn an awful lot of calories, but the endorphins stop me from fridge raids so it's all good!

No need to apologise!

But I'm confused, as it says 7lbs on the spreadsheet Grin

Morning everyone.
Some amazing losses from week one, we’ll done.

I’m in maintenance after4 months of this woe and I bounce the same 2lbs about over the week. I am 1lb down but I don’t expect any more. Ow as I’m at my target weight. So as long as I can keep it up I am a happy camper.

MerylSqueak · 25/10/2021 10:02

Thank you @BIWI. I hadn't thought about that with the chicken. unfortunately, this take away does tend toward gloop. Good idea about the side dish.

ouchmyfeet · 25/10/2021 10:18

Morning all, a decent 3.8lbs off for me this week. Very happy with that. Hoping to get another good chunk off this week before the dreaded week 3/4 doldrums.

Blushing slightly at BIWI selecting my ratatouille to share BlushGrin. This is the only ratatouille recipe I've ever enjoyed, I think possibly because there's not too much aubergine. And peeling the courgette rather than chopping it into chunks just makes the texture so much nicer and less soggy. All the chopping takes a while but the recipe makes absolutely loads (2 large dishes easily, 1 for the freezer) and it can be quite a relaxing dish to cook with the radio or a podcast on as it's just chopping and there's no time pressure to get things done before the next stage needs to happen.

I have a couple of veggie recipes lined up to try this week so will do those before I post another recommendation. Love the recipe posts, great for new ideas. And I agree with Rayna that the green roasting tin recipes make good accompaniments to a chunk of meat or fish Grin

Great to see all the losses popping up, KOKO to those who didn't get the results they were hoping for. It's early days, the WOE definitely works so stick at it.

Interesting variation in the chopped tomatoes carb counts. I actually bought those mutti ones recently as they popped up heavily discounted in the flash sale section when I was checking out my Ocado shop. They're really lovely, a whole tin of proper tomato with none of that horrible thickened red juice. I'd probably pay full price for them. My DB is a chef in an Italian restaurant and his tip for tinned tomatoes is never buy chopped as you get all the crap bits. He advises buying the best plum tomatoes you can and rinsing the juice off, just leaving the tomato for you to chop yourself. I get the logic but the convenience of chopped often wins for me!

ZiggZagg · 25/10/2021 10:31

2lb off this week, which I am moderately happy with! I have had more off in my first week but I struggled a bit over the weekend, so onwards and downward!

L today is scrambled egg and salmon in a lime, chili and olive oil dressing.

Dinner will be eggs, mushroom, facon, chalk hula and SLCR

Lots of WATER!

ouchmyfeet · 25/10/2021 10:33

Both these things are true for me too MotherBuckets. It's so much harder with the kids home but having a good week of bootcamp behind us will help. Definitely not buying a new coat, we have a few weeks to shed the pounds before it gets properly cold

This has reminded me that I was supposed to take measurements this morning. Oops. Maybe tomorrow.

ouchmyfeet · 25/10/2021 10:33

Cannot work out what the autocorrect has done there @ZiggZagg

There are some really good progresses on the thread.
And i am grateful that severe and complex allergies mean i do not have to content with the minefield that is takeaways and eating out. Does make me feel a bit better about that loss of activity Blush

Shocker of a week food wise, quandroupled exercise had - car is kaput so i want to go somewhere i have to walk. 6 miles to nearest town in any direction so really got to want it! pleasantly surprised there was a loss, but concerned what will happen after the false start of last week. (apparently i needed to remind myself of all my weaknesses and trigger points) and hoping that i manage to get my act together.

Just in case it will help anyone else be aware of where possibility for failures to occur, my failures happened because:
lack of attention and falling into habit routines (lack of mindfulness in task)
helpful others
lack of planning
skipping meals because didn't feel hungry and lost track of time.
didn't do a proper shop so working with what as in house (see car issue)
Horrific pain levels - pain killers and anti inflams are not a weight loss friend.
stress habits (i stress drink coffee and take milk and normally sugar in it - at worse it has been know to be 10 plus cups per day, was not that bad last week thankfully with 4 cups being a bad day)

Going to be honest i am rather jealous of all the lovely looking recipes that I can't eat or even adapt to be able to eat. So will you all enjoy them for me and report back?

hope everyone has a good week this week.

longwayoff · 25/10/2021 10:49

.

0DAAT · 25/10/2021 11:12

That's a good top about the tomatoes ouch. Thanks.

I'm on holidays here so can't weigh today. I'm happy enough skipping dessert and I don't drink. My children had chocolate mousse the other night and the portion size was HUGE. About a builder's mug! My veg count is low though - salad is shredded iceberg, tomato grated carrot, onion & sweetcorn. There's carrots with everything.
Anyway it's warm, the apartment is beautiful. We seem to have a private pool ( most apartments are empty).
So my diet is lowish carb, highish water. When I come home Friday, I might do ultra BC for the weekend!

Congratulations losers!

Ifeelmuchlessfat · 25/10/2021 11:12

Morning everyone, good to be back. Like Frenchpoodle I’m starting today.

Put a stone on over the summer, pretty much due to too much booze and not enough restraint. I eat well until I drink anc then the crisps and chocolate come out. Just been away to palma with dd for a quick half term break so that didn’t help Hmm

Looking forward to a few wine-free weeks now though, drinking more water and eating cleanly. Have gone back to a veggie woe though so carbs might be slightly higher, but I’m hoping that dropping the alcohol carbs will make up for that.

Anyway, nice to be back in the swing of it, and thanks to @BIWI as ever. Off to Sainsbury’s, the ratatouille has inspired me @ouchmyfeet.

Andi2020 · 25/10/2021 11:58

@averywittyusername I'm the same as you in maintenance so doing low carb so I can maintain this way of living.
Well done on all the losses and good on all the runners.
Half term hear too. Dd1 has work every day thankgod or I'd be on a binge of snacks with the growling and door slamming.
She came home yesterday to have a shower before work and I had to have a cream bun when she left for work.
She spent 3 hours getting ready for work so spent no time all weekend with family and I'm the one in the wrong.
Dd2 has show rehersal all week for Mid term happy she has something to occupy her.
Ds will just be on ps and watch videos likes his own company Grin for now.
