Summer Low Carb mini-Bootcamp - week 3

StuntNun · 16/08/2021 06:15

Welcome to week 3 of our mini-Bootcamp. If you have been following strict Bootcamp then you can move to Bootcamp Light this week. This means you can eat when you're hungry rather than sticking to three meals a day, and you can re-introduce alcohol, low carb fruits, nuts and seeds, and dark chocolate in small quantities. Some people choose to stick with strict Bootcamp on weekdays and do Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

Note that there is almost always a weight loss stall between weeks 3 and 5 of going low carb so do not worry if the scales don't drop this week or next. It's caused by a temporary increase in water retention and you will still be burning fat if you keep following the rules. If the lack of weight loss gets you down then remind yourself that this is to be expected and the scales will start moving again.

As always, here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness!

Actually really enjoying my food at the moment and getting a lot of the family joining in (albeit often with a potato popped on the plate).
I'll be weighing in after this coffee has chance to kick in 😉 or it'll be a "stays same" for me! Since I'm not feeling deprived I'll keep up the motivation... that 36 hour migraine keeps me from going if the rails too easily!

TidyDancer · 16/08/2021 07:27

Morning everyone. 3lbs off last week for me. Not as much as week one but I didn't expect it to be. Still pleased!

I'm going to stick with bootcamp during the week then see how I feel at the weekend, I may do bootcamp light then. My only concern is that historically my binge pattern is at weekends so I need to consider if relaxing then is right for me!

TheHoundsofLove · 16/08/2021 07:32

Morning all! I found the first 2 weeks a struggle and didn't really manage to get properly started - we were away, lots of travelling etc... I've still lost a pound and a half, which is better than nothing. But, my husband is back at work today (actually in the office!), so I'm starting afresh. I'm really enjoying all the low carb cooking and have done a meal plan for the week, so am feeling organised.

recreationalcalpol · 16/08/2021 08:07

1 pound off this week. Slow and steady wins the race. Put all my maternity clothes into storage yesterday and can comfortably fit into lots of my pre-baby clothes (haven’t been able to do that since my first baby in 2018). Squeezed myself into a size 10 skirt yesterday 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

So feeling positive. We are off on holiday to see family on Saturday but my DF is strict keto and lots of my family are low carb (strong family history of diabetes) and we are self catering so should be okay.

KOKO!

B: berry compot, Greek yog and keto granola
L: picnic with the children - salad, eggs, cheese
D: probably sausages

MsAwesomeDragon · 16/08/2021 08:27

Morning. Another 3lbs lost this week, taking it to 6lbs total, and pushing me into the next stone bracket down which I'm pleased with.

I've got 2 more weeks til I'm back at work, so I need to use that time working out quick and easy meals for after work. We often fall back on shop bought jars to make things really easy, and those aren't going to fit with low carb.

I've got 2 days away this week, so I might not manage to stick completely to plan those days but I'll do my best.

Jollyholibobs · 16/08/2021 08:34

Well done those who have lost this week. 1.2lb loss for me this week which tips me below the next half stone mark. Great to be back into pre-baby clothes @recreationalcalpol My muffin top over my jeans is definitely reducing. Best thing though is that low carb is established again and the crazy carb cravings are subsiding. A couple of holidays in June and July had really tipped me off course.
I am not posting much but reading everything you all post. Thanks for this thread. It’s interesting to see a new set of challenges around socialising and traveling that we haven’t dealt with on boot camp for a while. I have been low carbing for a year now and have found it difficult over the last couple of months. Staying with family who asked what they should get in for me then proudly showed me what they had got. It was so wrong and they’d made a special effort! They’d gone to trouble to accommodate me but literally bought low fat everything including skimmed milk in vast quantities. They hadn’t listened really and just went with their interpretation of healthy. Lesson learnt. I will have to really establish the rules in advance next time!

Planning to moderate my dairy intake this week. My ff Greek yoghurt consumption can get a bit heavy.

Happy Monday everyone.

Dellabob123 · 16/08/2021 09:24

Morning everyone. First weigh in this morning after being away for 9 nights and it’s better than I thought. 2lb’s up which I’m really pleased about as my veg consumption really suffered.

I’ve got 4lbs to lose now to reach my target weight and it’s always so hard those last few. I do rely heavily on cheese based food and that needs to scale back I think.

Will prob do more strict boot camp this week but I am happy with the results.
Well done everyone for your successes xx

fitflopqueen · 16/08/2021 09:39

Well I have stayed the same this week but happy with that for now as have had a few extras this week and not enough water the last 2 days.

Kerplunkk · 16/08/2021 10:49

I’ve stayed the same but I expected that.
This week I need to focus on eating more veg & less cheese/Greek yoghurt!

Rayna37 · 16/08/2021 11:17

Doing OK, really need to be stricter in the week to make up for weekends.

B: one sausage and a boiled egg (cold, mid morning at work)
L: mackerel in oil, in a "sauce" of creme fraiche and wholegrain mustard, on salad. Yogurt.
D: fajita style turkey. Homemade spice mix, and just a plate of meat and veg- I don't bother with any sort of wrap replacement. I think it's helpful to try to shift the mindset from recreating the carbs to just replacing it completely with more veg. I only use cauli rice with something saucy like curry, and courgetti with bolognese. Otherwise would just eat cauliflower, chopped courgettes etc.

Had a nice lunch yesterday of chopped sautéed courgette, shallot, bacon and mushrooms topped with grated cheese- nice change from an omelette.

oscarandelliesdad · 16/08/2021 11:18

Oh dear. I need to have a long conversation with the big stick. Got a tummy bug last week and when I could manage food again it was a disaster. Feeling better now so I'm heading to the supermarket to get back on track. Glad to see others are faring better.

pinknsparkly · 16/08/2021 11:36

Good luck everyone! I totally forgot to weigh in this morning so will try and remember to do it tomorrow. I'm hopeful for a small loss though as my tummy feels a bit less squishy Grin

My aim for this week is to reduce my dairy consumption, though I suspect that's going to make my egg consumption go through the roof instead!

Breakfast = coffee (x 2, bad nights sleep!) plus hard boiled egg
Lunch = tuna, avocado and mayonnaise salad
Dinner = pork shoulder steak (lots of lovely fat running through it!) with mixed veg

@StuntNun - I think I've somewhat misunderstood the bootcamp rules regards how often to eat. I thought the first two weeks were also eat when you're hungry (but also make sure to have 3 meals a day). I therefore had three meals and at least two snacks a day. Was I doing it wrong and should have been avoiding the snacks? I'm going to try mostly sticking to the strict BC for the whole 6 weeks, with the addition of some nuts which I've had to do already (so no fruit, chocolate or alcohol)

I find the same mentality works for me. As I eat dinner with my husband, if I had what felt like a poor man's alternative to his carb (like a lettuce leaf instead of a wheat wrap) then I'd feel short changed. But by instead having extra garlic buttery mushrooms compare to him, it feels like I'm actually the one with the better dinner Grin
bettybigballs · 16/08/2021 11:43

Morning bootcampers! I've STS but have raging PMT so know I'll have a whoosh mid week.
Went out for brunch yesterday and had the nicest omelette i've ever had, no idea what they did to it but can't stop thinking about it!

PastramiNoRye · 16/08/2021 12:19

Marking my place on the new thread!

Well done all you losers! Fab job! I think I'm going to try and have another week on strict bootcamp as I started a bit late.

Haven't weighed in yet as our holiday house doesn't have scales. Might wait for tomorrow morning!

StuntNun · 16/08/2021 12:57

Pinknsparkly eat as many eggs as you like. My record is nine in one day! You're fine to have three meals a day plus snacks when you're starting out with low carb.

After the first two or three weeks of Bootcamp you should find your hunger level reduces and you don't need the snacks or you may find yourself missing a meal without realising. So learn to pay attention to your body's hunger and satiety signals and respond to them. Ideally we would eat two or three meals a day and not need any snacks but it does depend on how you eat generally. If you find you're hungry mid-afternoon then that can be because your lunch wasn't substantial enough. My DH only eats breakfast and dinner because he goes to the gym on his lunch break but then he's often peckish in the evening because he hasn't eaten enough through the day.

One thing to consider is that every time you eat (or you consume calories if you're having e.g. creamy coffees) then it spikes your insulin levels. And while we call Bootcamp a low carb diet it is really a low insulin diet so anything that minimises your insulin levels is beneficial for weight loss. There are three main ways to lower insulin:

  1. Minimise carbohydrate intake.
  2. Minimise the number of times you eat per day.
  3. Increase the length of your overnight fast.

In some people there is also a fourth:

  1. Reduce your frequency of dairy consumption, particularly milk, cream and yogurt.

Well done on losses especially those going to pre baby weight. My youngest is 13 and I have go to my lightest since then.
Lost 1.6 this week Dh lost 4 Grin he had a lot more to loose but he is trying.

ZiggZagg · 16/08/2021 14:53

Afternoon all, I had another 4lb weight loss this morning, so 11lbs in total this bootcamp.

Today I have eaten some pistachios and 2SLCR with chicken.

Dinner will be Algerian sausage with FLGV in a cream sauce 😋

I've drank 3 litres already so will probably reach 4 by the end of the day! Have a good one, KOKO and drink all the water!!!

VividImagination · 16/08/2021 15:49

3lbs loss this morning so 10lbs this bootcamp. I popped to the shop for berries and nuts and almost bought chocolate but managed to restrain myself. I know that if I have it in the house it will call out to me and I will eat too much.
This week I’m going to miss out breakfast as I’m not really hungry then.

Lunch - Greek yogurt, 15 raspberries, 3 half walnuts and 6 almonds. Cup of tea with soya milk.
Dinner - Roasted chicken leg with buttered spinach and green beans.

Lunch was soooo good I could have eaten it all over again!

prettybird · 16/08/2021 16:12

Didn't have the best of weeks last week: ds was down and we ended up going to his favourite Italian restaurant the night before he left Blush

I'm having lots of water today Smile and will weigh in tomorrow.

Kerplunkk · 16/08/2021 16:22

Well done on the losses this week everyone Flowers

MsAwesomeDragon · 16/08/2021 16:25

What are SLCR please? I've seen them mentioned a few times, and I've guessed they are some sort of low carb bread rolls, but a link or something specific I can Google would help me out I think. Not that I eat much bread, but they would be helpful for picnic lunches at times.

prettybird · 16/08/2021 16:32

@MsAwesomeDragon : Seriously Low Carb Rolls (and bread).

Only available mail order and I believe should be frozen as soon as you get them as they go mouldy quickly.

Expensive but apparently quite good if you're really missing bread.

I've never bought them though.

ZiggZagg · 16/08/2021 17:04

@MsAwesomeDragon https://seriouslylowcarb.com/ i love them, with chicken, tuna or cheese but great with soup and loads if butter! They are expensive but worth it in my opinion Smile

BestIsWest · 16/08/2021 17:10

No weighing for me but keeping on here.
Been aware that I haven’t been drinking enough water these last few days and possibly too many creamy coffees.
I am going to take on board the point about insulin spiking and try to minimise the number of times I consume something.
