Moving to Liverpool

As the title says! We are thinking about making the move to Liverpool, could anyone recommend some nice areas, especially areas with a bigger Irish community, we are dreadfully unhappy where we are living currently and this move is important we get it right!

The nicer areas of Liverpool tend to be on the South side. Mossley Hill, Allerton, Aigburth are all nice. The area round Lark Lane is nice too.
What are your requirements? Are schools a consideration, do you want bars and restaurants etc.

Hi op, there is no one area with a high Irish community but there are lots of Irish generally living in the city. There is an Irish centre that would be worth checking out for some home comforts.

Area wise Aigburth, Allerton and Mossley Hill are nice in the south end. West Derby is also nice and a bit more central, also handy for the Irish centre but not too close. I wouldn’t recommend living in the area where the Irish centre is. Good luck, I hope you get what you are looking for and are happier in Liverpool

Oh, I used to live close to Lark Lane in Aigburth and I loved it. I adore Liverpool, it has a special place in my heart. When I lived there it was still very rough but the people I met were the warmest, kindest and funniest you could imagine. I've never understood the bad reputation around Liverpool! I always felt safe there and some areas are really beautiful and grand. Yes, you have pockets of poverty but it's really not that different from most other cities.

I met my Ex-fiancé there (a gorgeous scouser with the brightest mind a heart of gold) and later my even more wonderful husband. To me, Liverpool is the city of love - move away, Paris!

There are tons of Irish folk everywhere in Liverpool.
Do you have DC and need schools? If so this will massively influence your choice of area. I work in Liverpool and live on the Wirral. Wouldn't live anywhere else. Easy commute on the train, great schools, safe area, views of the sea. Great place to live.

Crosby to the north of Liverpool is also really nice and it's near the sea, the marine lake, the Anthony Gormley statues, a good leisure centre with pool and some nice parks. Waterloo is nearby, its a tiny bit rougher but is an up and coming area and I really like it there. There are lots of good places to eat on South road in Waterloo and it's even closer to the Marine Lake than Crosby. Formby a bit further north is posh and "naice" with a Waitrose but I find it snobby and don't like it.

I'm in the Mossley Hill/Allerton area which is a nice place to live. Schools are good in this area and there's lovely parks, bars and restaurants. It's close to the motorway and the airport. Can you give us an idea of your kids ages, budget etc?

What requirements do you have?

It's the type of city where you could be in a naice area and walk two minutes and be in a rougher area but that's fine, people are lovely and you will be very much welcomed.

I'm on the outskirts and have also lived in West Derby for many years. Lots of great schools, pubs, parks and shops with equally good transport links into town.

It depends on what you're looking for locally and your budget.
The south of the city is nicer, as pp have said.
I'm not from Liverpool, moved here as a student, and very quickly decided I wanted to stay here. I met my now dh which made me even more sure this is where I want to live and raise our children.
Locals are warm and friendly, and I think anyone from anywhere would feel welcome and at home here.

If you are looking at the nicer areas of South Liverpool also consider Gateacre which is lovely and Woolton. However property prices are higher in the nicer areas obviously, 2 bed terraces are on the market for approx £180 k in Allerton.

Need to know your budget as there are big differences in price between different areas.

Will need schools pref Catholic school, 2 boys year 4 and year 7, hubby self employed and a mobile business so he will have to build that up, I'm hoping to get part time work, am a chef by trade, we also plan to rent, budget about 750/800 per month, just hoping for a lively, working class area, community spirit and to accepted for our nationality!!! Where we live now in the UK we are not so much,

You'll be accepted here easily, Molly. There's lots of Irish people here (most of us have Irish blood anyway!) along with other nationalities. Do you have a preference for faith schools or not?

I would rather a catholic school just for ease of communion confirmation etc but it's not the end of the world, where we currently live we not v welcome, recently asked was I catholic or IRA! had to explain the stupidness of the question, we are gOing to Liverpool tomorrow for a few days for a recce run to see what areas there is etc!

I live in L18 (Mossley Hill). While I certainly wouldn't say there was any specific Irish community in a particular part of Liverpool, you do tend to find Irish people in all neighbourhoods. Quite a few parents at my kids' schools are from various parts of Ireland.
There are lots of very good Catholic primary schools in south Liverpool - St Anthony Of Padua, St Austin's, Bishop Eton, Pascal Baylon etc. Catholic senior schools are a bit thinner on the ground - the main ones you'd be looking at are SFX (boys only) and St Edward's (mixed but notoriously difficult to get into!). There are others in the city but not in the south, so I have no experience of them.
I live in an area where the housing is very varied. Where I live, and the dozen or so either side, are mostly 1930s terraces with no gardens or off road parking. These typically rent for about £800 a month. There are then a lot of roads with normal 3-bed semi's with gardens, and then some roads with huge Victorian villas! It really is a very mixed area but I guess you could say it suits all budgets!

Waves to thesockgap who must live near me! OP, my kids are at one of the schools mentioned in the above post by thesockgap. All of those schools are excellent. Girls have a better choice for Catholic secondaries I've found, we've just been through the application process for this!
Have a look in the L15 (Wavertree) area too. Very close to L18/L16 but you get more for your money. It's a varied area, a lot of lovely family homes but also a lot of student areas. As others have said, feel free to PM me if I can help.

As a PP has said, you'd be hard pushed to find anyone from Liverpool that doesn't have Irish roots!! Most of us had at least a great grandparent that came over! So although you may not hear an Irish accent every day, you will certainly not be judged on yours! :)
