There used to be a brilliant, long running thread about 10 years ago; a little community of mostly immigrant Brits (but some native to the US) who just chatted about our day-to-day lives. I moved back to the UK in 2016 so stopped reading and posting.

I’m now back the US for the foreseeable future and was wondering if any of the original gang were still around, or anyone else would like to chat about life here. Election madness? The weather? Missing Marmite and decent cheese? Sadly I can’t remember anyone’s usernames or I’d try summoning…

The American constitution applies only to American citizens.

Why is it shameless to chastise someone for speaking down to my fellow citizens but not speaking down to, or about, my fellow citizens?

I'm not ashamed for taking up for my people and highlighting misinformation re: Native Americans (as I happen to be one) and I really don't care about alternate views on this point.

Nope, the protections offered by the Constitution apply to people with green cards too, as they are lawful.permanent residents of the US.

The tax code and the criminal code also apply to green card holders, with deportation available to the justice system as a penalty.

Holders of green cards cannot vote or serve on a jury, but they are fully entitled to due process (under the Due Process clauses of the Fifth and Fourteenth amendments) and the full panoply of rights guaranteed by the First, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth amendments.

This means freedom of speech, free assembly, religion, yada, yada.

I don't agree with someone going to another country and telling everyone back home how ignorant the people are there that have given me their space and hospitality.

Very un-American thing to do and especially in a state that consistently ranks within the top 10 for the most friendliest. That doesn't mean we're simple and will tolerate people taking advantage of our kindness.

No, you're wrong. Visitors can be deported for anti-American sentiment. You can google it if you're allowed to in your region.

OP, if I were you, I'd ask the hosts of this website to remove your post and refresh yourself (and your family) about what the US deems to be anti-American and grounds for revocation of visas.

There are countless lawyer websites advising that you should not post the type of things you have posted here, as you do not have the legal rights of a US citizen and can be deported, even if you have a Green Card as that is subject to you obeying certain laws (contrary to what anyone else says here).

If in doubt, refer to local legal representative, if you can bring yourself to trust any dumb Okies to help you out.

I think your expectations of how far immigration look into greencard applicants/holders is a little high. They're not going to be tracking Mumsnet posts. Maybe if they were posting on their personal facebook or Instagram you would have a point.

I really recommend you google the Constitution. Contact your local congressional representative about all the clauses and amendments and basic principles in it that give you indigestion.

Do some research. AI is being employed and someone could report this post to various institutions if they were inclined to do so etc.

On the one hand: I don't like condescension and anti-Native comments. And it's true: immigrants to the UK would be told off if they talked too negatively about the country. I've seen it happen. (ETA: Read back and all she did there was say some Native students didn't say it. That's not an insult; it's merely factual reporting. Wow. I was a little sad that this thread was so quiet. Imagine my misplaced excitement when I got a notification that someone had to responded to one of my posts on it! 😂

I’ve read back through it and I’m honestly struggling to see what is “unamerican” about what I said. I wrote that, according to my kids, lots of their fellow students of various races and cultural backgrounds don’t say the pledge. It wasn’t a judgement or an opinion on whether they should or shouldn’t be saying it. Oklahoma’s educational rank as 50th out of 50 is just a fact, and I don’t think it’s hugely controversial to suggest that the guy who took us there as state superintendent was not doing a great job 🤷🏻‍♀️

Anyways, moving on…. Now the thread has sprung back into life, how’s everyone doing? What’s the weather like where you are? How did you celebrate the 4th? Are people invested in the World Cup in your state/city (or were until last night)? Folks don’t seem too bothered here; everyone still has their “Let’s go Thunder!” signs up from the basketball season.

we were back in Europe for summer hols and here at airport gate heading back to Midwest. Great news we got our green card applications approved woohoo… bad news was the approval happened online on a Friday night at 8pm when we were due to travel abroad on Sunday morning and since you cannot actually travel without the physical green card, which takes 1-2 weeks to be mailed in the post, and when approval happens online it automatically invalidates all existing visa status (L1 for us) we had to cancel our trip at the last minute. Such a disappointment so a watch out for anyone in the green card process. Ours took 6 months from application to approval and was employment based. Lost a lot of money as insurance didn’t cover visa issues but I guess it’s a long term investment!! Happy 250 to USA! 🇺🇸

Wow sorry to hear that! I’m glad you’ve got your green cards now though - that must be a relief. And how fantastic it only took 6 months for you! We are planning for a 12-18 month timeline for my green card (marriage-based, DP is a US citizen). I’ve heard marriage-based can actually be quicker than employment-based applications so it’s wonderful to hear even employment-based applications aren’t taking years and years. I’m also on L1 but loathe my job so I’m looking forward to having the freedom to leave! 😊

It was beastly hot (40 C) until Sunday, and we've just had over 4" of rain over two days that has cooled things off considerably. Most of my local fireworks celebrations were postponed either due to the heat or the severe thunderstorms we had the night of the 4th. So we made mac & cheese, cooked burgers and hot dogs on the grill, and then watched the fireworks on TV. There were lots of great drone shows, which I liked better than the fireworks.

Interest in the World Cup here is mild, for the most part. New Yorkers are still basking in the glow of the Knicks winning their first championship in 53 years.
