MNers living in the USA

There used to be a brilliant, long running thread about 10 years ago; a little community of mostly immigrant Brits (but some native to the US) who just chatted about our day-to-day lives. I moved back to the UK in 2016 so stopped reading and posting.

I’m now back the US for the foreseeable future and was wondering if any of the original gang were still around, or anyone else would like to chat about life here. Election madness? The weather? Missing Marmite and decent cheese? Sadly I can’t remember anyone’s usernames or I’d try summoning…

It was too good to pass up. You'll treasure it forever. 😁

I mean the chicken did need a friend...

LookAtThatCritter · 11/11/2024 18:03

I wasn't in the original group but another Brit in the US here! 👋hoping to move back to the UK in a few years though.

missmonstermunch · 11/11/2024 18:11

I wasn’t here back then either, but hope it’s ok to join! Brit married to an American with 2 American kids. I’ve been here 15+ years in DC / DC suburbs, but still miss a few important things (mostly hula hoops, chocolate and M&S food!)

MrsFrumble · 22/11/2024 22:40

Hello @missmonstermunch and @LookAtThatCritter !

My MIL is visiting from the UK for Thanksgiving and has managed to smuggle 1kg of Stilton and 1kg of Shropshire Blue over in her suitcase. We’ve gone from cheese purgatory to cheese heaven! On the downside we bought some port to go with it from a local liquor store, and discovered American port tastes like grape-flavoured Jolly Ranchers 😖

What a lovely and niche thread! Checking in from NYC. I’ve been on here for around 15 years. It’s been an experience going through pregnancy, early years and now into high school so far from home (culturally more than physically, really) and MN has really been a lifeline to help cut through the American-ness of it all! Now that we have regained the right to vote in the UK I do lean on MN a fair bit to tell me what the papers don’t.

Anyway, now that thanksgiving is done, I reckon it’s acceptable to crack open my box of Waitrose brown butter and cognac mini mince pies. We’ll be getting our tree and a jug of maple syrup on Sunday (same guys every year, they bring them down from Vermont a few times per week), and start on our advent calendars. Love love love autumn and winter here, although worry we won’t ever see snow again 😭

mathanxiety · 12/01/2025 05:47

Bumping to wish everyone a Happy New Year while it's still January.

mathanxiety · 12/01/2025 05:48

...and I hope any MNers in LA are ok.

NeedANapAgain · 12/01/2025 06:01

Sorry, mistake post.

Hi everyone!

I grew up in Britain but moved to the US after I graduated from university. I've been here over 30 years now and I live in Florida. My kids were born and raised in the US and are now young adults.

cheapskatemum · 29/01/2025 21:41

Where in Florida @CloudywMeatballs?

Tampa

cheapskatemum · 31/01/2025 22:33

Nice! My aunt lived there for many years and her son, my cousin still does.

MrsFrumble · 31/01/2025 23:47

How are you feeling about your local Gulf’s new name @CloudywMeatballs ?

BTW, love the name. My children were obsessed the with movies when they were small.

It will always be the Gulf of Mexico to me, but to be honest, him renaming the Gulf is the least of our worries!

allfurcoatnoknickers · 02/02/2025 19:58

@CloudywMeatballs 🎶 Laaaddiiiessss of Tampa 🎶

Sorry, couldn't resist myself. V jealous of the nice Florida weather I'm sure you're enjoying. It's like a freezer in NYC right now.

MrsFrumble · 03/02/2025 02:52

It was 72 degrees today here in OKC, so we went for a hike in our t-shirts. Obviously I’d still rather have been in NYC, but I guess then we’d have had to drive more than 20 minutes to get to a secluded woodland trail. Silver linings!

Question for those whose kids were born in the UK and now go to public schools here; how do they feel about the Pledge of Allegiance? Mine - understandably as they are not US citizens and were (mostly) not raised here - flat-out refuse to participate. They understand they must stay quiet and be respectful during, and fortunately their school is liberal is doesn’t enforce it (apparently there are some other kids of Native/Mexican/African American heritage who don’t say it either) but National Embarrassment Ryan Walters is making noises about making it compulsory for all students to take part (because apparently THAT’S gonna fix OK’s ranking of 49th for educational standards…) 🙄

Can I join this thread? 🙋‍♀️

I moved to NYC a few months ago from London.

Absolutely loving it so far. 💜

I'm currently upstate on a ski trip. Love having ski resorts on my doorstep (sort of). Used to have to fly to the Alps to ski, now can do long weekends skiing more easily. Actually planning another weekend this season.

knitnerd90 · 03/02/2025 10:08

One of mine didn't say it on principle and stood quietly (past tense as they are now in college). One doesn't say it but I suspect it's because they're too distracted. The third thinks it's silly. We live in a liberal area and no one comments on who does and doesn't say it. in my view it's up to them whether or not to say it but they have to be respectful about it.

All of mine are dual citizens however.

knitnerd90 · 03/02/2025 10:10

Oh and welcome! I do hear further upstate or Vermont is nicer for skiing, Vermont particularly, but it's a further drive. Still, for a weekend it's so convenient! Eldest is at college in New England but has not picked up skiing.

in the summer you'll have the beach as well.
