It was about a mile to our school and Mu let us go at 7 (busy roads though, for the time)

Mum says she wouldn;t even consider it now thougha s those roads are now just traffic jams at high speeds.

ANNd that's the crux really: how safe is the road, and how sensible is your child.

Ww live close to a school where one road is a horro but has a crrossing and has lots of aprents; I wouldn;t let ds2 (9) walk it yet as he is simply not sensible enough. OTOH if he were I would.

Am I jusging the idea of a 5 year old on a bike with an 8 year old unsupervised and potentially helmetless? Hell yes. Woudl it be a matter for SSD? IME of working alongside them, yes. They wouldn;t take action over that but it would be a flag to check just how laissez faire the home was...

Must be Captains bed time by now.

The Mayors office have got involved.

This level of freedom must depend on lots of factors including the area & traffic conditions, but most importantly on the maturity of the children concerned. Only the parents are qualified to judge that - not the headteacher. I applaud these parents for having courage of their convictions - good for you!
