Muffin Tops

I've just read this article on the BBC News website. I was aware that being overweight, (especially if you carry it around your middle) is very bad for your health but this has really brought it home to me.

I think I need to change my lifestyle, get rid of the muffin top and then I'll change my Mumsnet name.

Does anyone else want to join me?

stopping smoking and stopping drinking and having children do not make you fat

EATING TOO MUCH makes you fat

Stop making excuses. Stop eating between meals. Cut your portion size IN HALF, cut down on bread butter crisps, booze and biscuits

Enjoy the feeling of your waistband not digging in and realise that nothing tastes as good as being slim feels

(I'm a visitor from another diet thread, can you tell?)

YOU CAN DO IT

I think eating too many carbs will make your stomach more muffiny

ImSoNotTelling · 21/04/2010 17:57

smoking and alcohol can act as appetite suppressants

i don't think that it is a sign of weakness to gain weight when you pack them in, it is a consequence of not being drugged all the time

I am too an overweight carboholic

I have been enrolled at the gym, was recommended by my GP. I have been going a month nearly but have lost no weight am starting to enjoy it now and working out harder now, and hoping I have a review with gym lady in a week so will hopefully start shedding pounds.

I want to loose 2 stone approx, am 12st 7lbs

I did low carb briefly once, was effective but I love my carbs

ClickNegg · 21/04/2010 18:11

i havent eaten bread or potato since february although had the odd crust off the boys

my day is thus
cereal
apple( break)
chicken and salad ( lunch)
or if at home a nOcAL home made veg soup
tea - cup of tea
dinner - grilled meat/poached meat and vegetables

was pretty starving initially but ate a lot of fruit etc

have lost about a stone.

I had a lovely muffinage, actually it was more like a cottage loaf.. My bmi was in normal range - but it was where I carry all my weight. I have familial high cholestrol and am on statins, so did need to get rid of it.

Just exercising more will not make you lose weight - it will tone, which is great once the flab is off, but you need to think about what and how much you eat too.

I like carbs too and can't imagine not eating them but I go for brown bread and pasta, instead of white, and in moderation. I don't have potato as my veggie of choice now - I choose somethiNg else. And I don't eat cake or biscuits every day.

You do have to WANT to do it though and you have to make the changes permanently. There endeth the lesson.

ImSoNotTelling · 21/04/2010 18:23

I think the people who have given up smoking and/or drinking on this thread should be appluaded really. It's a hard thing to do IMO.

ClickNegg · 21/04/2010 18:26

Ignore Gary ...

I am tucking into a big plate of pasta ... which is well within my points allowance ...

I am Carb-o-tine, the WeightWatchers devil ... come over to the dark side ...

yes folk who give up smoking and drinking (too much) should be applauded. but IMO people use ANY justification to say why they got fat when tis really just gluttony, for whatever reason.

I figured I would 'get fat' after I had kids because since having children my mum has always told me 'oh you'll get fat like me' But I ahve a choice about whether I get fat or not. food has never jumped into my mouth of its own accord.

Cutting down carbs but not eliminating them entirely is surely just another way of cutting down calories though? Most diets, however they dress it up, are just different rules which limit the amount of calories you eat by making it difficult to eat a lot of anything 'bad'.
True ketosis (i.e. Gary Taubes, Atkins etc) means hardly any carbs at all, and is effective for weight loss (sustaining the weight loss though is a different story). Just cutting out bread and pasta but eating cereal wouldn't lead to ketosis, so you'd be just as good to eat what you like and count calories.
I've read theories that ketosis is the bodies natural way to lose weight as it links back to the feast or famine days, and can also be used as a way to control type 2 diabetes by diet alone. Quite interesting, I'll find a link to the book if anyone is interested.
Personally I've found the only way I've lost weight and kept it off is through calorie counting, a very balanced diet and exercise as part of a life change rather than a time limited 'diet'.

clackety I have cut down on carbs by about 90% and so yes I have cut calories significantly as I dont have anyhting to ladle butter onto anymore! But I also have no bloating, more energy, and dont fart anymore!

MarionCole · 21/04/2010 20:52

Did my weigh in this morning for day 14 on low carbs and have lost 11 lbs . I'm within a shot of where I want to be now so I'm going to start adding a bit of carb back in. Had half a slice of wholemeal toast with my poached egg this morning and it tasted like a little piece of heaven.

ClickNegg · 21/04/2010 20:53

by eliminating spud i have forced myself ot eat MORE VEG
also PLAYING CARD size pieces of meat - not the same size as your h

MarionCole · 21/04/2010 20:56
