BUSH "we will find and deal with the perpetrators" Is this going to mean another war??

sharklet · 07/07/2005 13:41

Was just watching President Bush at G8 making a statement about the attacks on London saying he was standing by Tony Blair and that the US Gov would seek out and deal with the perpetrators.

Last time Bush was saying stuff like this it was afghanistan and then Iraq. Its got me worried now. DH is in the US Airforce based in the UK. Their alert status has just gone up. They have locked down the base and he not coming home tonight be the looks of it.

Amm really scared this will have long term repurcussions as well as the horror of today.

Senora, i don't think that it is the truth tho. Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11 when bush was saying it did. it still doesnt. maybe it's an excuse for al quaida to target close allies of the US...but they'd probably be doing it anyway...

SenoraPostrophe · 07/07/2005 14:09

The UK wasn't a target beofre Iraq though. Nor was Spain.

Heathcliffscathy · 07/07/2005 14:10

oh god he's (bush) on the BBC...HE CAN'T SPEAK!!!! He actually does almost say Tiny Blur a la that satire problem whose name escapes....Deadringers that'll be!

look at him....arghhhhhhhh

SenoraPostrophe · 07/07/2005 14:10

...shouldn't have said "tell the truth" though - how about "say what they believe"

WideWebWitch · 07/07/2005 14:10

He is The Manchurian Candidate isn't he? Shocking.

Heathcliffscathy · 07/07/2005 14:11

SP are you sure about that??? We are America's closest ally in europe.

tbh, i don't think that being fearful of being target for terrorism is a reason to do or not do anything. going to war in iraq was wrong....full stop. whether it risked making us a bigger target is the least of it imo...

GeorginaA · 07/07/2005 14:11

I'd watch but I'd probably say something REALLY rude at the telly and there's little ears about...

spidermama · 07/07/2005 14:12

I wish Blair would distance himself from that scarey man he's been hanging out with.

Heathcliffscathy · 07/07/2005 14:13

yes. someone should have a word with tony about stranger danger

bush just cannot appear sincere...he probably can't even when he is...all those weird gestures...shrugs in the wrong places, emphasis on the wrong words so that the sentences don't make any sense.....

SenoraPostrophe · 07/07/2005 14:14

Of course I'm not sure - I don't have al quaida contacts.

However pre 2001 the US was the biggest target by a long way because of its support for Israel - the UK has a long history of being fairly even handed when it comes to Palestine.

I would have been anti-war even if I didn't believe that to be true, btw, but it was by no means a small part of my anti-war-ness.

teeavee · 07/07/2005 14:14

Ken Livinstone's speech was very moving, and he said exactly the right thing, imo

teeavee · 07/07/2005 14:16

sophable, he's thick as thit, that's why he can hardly string a sentence together

what is so scary is all the power he wields

Heathcliffscathy · 07/07/2005 14:16

you're right SP. i guess i don't want bush and blur to have a reason to do the whole 9-11/iraq linking nonsense...and they will

GeorginaA · 07/07/2005 14:16

has anyone got the text of the livingstone interview - ds1 gets verbal diorrhea whenever the radio goes on, and I'm avoiding the telly pictures atm.

Heathcliffscathy · 07/07/2005 14:19

livingstone was great. he was visibly upset.

SenoraPostrophe · 07/07/2005 14:21

from the guardian news blog:

1323 The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, says: "London has been the target of a cowardly terrorist attack. Londoners have responded calmly and courageously.

"I commend the professionalism, courage of the Metropolitan Police, Transport for London staff, the Ambulance, Fire and other emergency services.

"Innocent people going from all of London's communities have been targeted by this indiscriminate attack. I urge Londoners from all of this city's diverse communities and faiths to support one another and stand together against terrorism."

Heathcliffscathy · 07/07/2005 14:29

oooh, no they've missed the best bit where he said somehting along the lines that this was not targetting primeministers world leaders etc, but ordinary londoners...

SenoraPostrophe · 07/07/2005 14:31

I was going to say I think they've cut it.

I liked the communities bit. I have a horrible feeling that some people are not going to take much notice though.

teeavee · 07/07/2005 14:32

he also said that the terrorists wil fail in their ultimate aim, and that london will always be open to those who are fleeing from their tyrannuy to live in a free society - or words to that effect.

by far the best, most sincere reaction from a politician

Heathcliffscathy · 07/07/2005 14:32

SP, you're are spot on...al quaida have posted on an internet site saying this is revenge for iraq and afghanistan and that denmark and italy are next unless they withdraw troops...

sharklet · 07/07/2005 14:37

Sophable

I couldn't be more anit Bush. It happens I married an American. Doesn't mean I automatically buy into thier politics or government wrongdoings. Its kind of hard for me to reconcile with what they do and the fact they pay DH's wages!

Just for the record DH is anit bush too as you may be surprised are a large number of US Military Active Members!

Its nice to know they are not all blindly following orders.

So - (I know this is off topic but still) - do you guys think I should carry on with plans to go to London this weekend for a long weekend with hubby?

Part of me thinks it's going to be chaotic, and a bit crass going on a "jolly" while they're still cleaning up devastation.

Part of me thinks not going means the terrorists "won".

Heathcliffscathy · 07/07/2005 14:54

see how it goes for rest of day. but i'd definitely go...unless is still chaos...but don't see that it will be

lunavix · 07/07/2005 14:57

Georgina- they JUST showed that speech again on BBC

GeorginaA · 07/07/2005 14:58

Am veering that way... this morning I was adamant we were cancelling, but damnit - I want to go. This is our first time away on our own since before ds2 was born and has been planned for months.

Like you say - wait and see if the tubes start running again and things seem to be settling down again.
