LOL you are obviously feeling strongly about it!

I wondered if being at home with a baby didn't seem a whole lot preferable to being bullied by a bunch of boys in the school playground

ZephirineDrouhin · 03/11/2009 10:05

I love the way the DM drop in that bit about the benefits at the end of the article.

Sounds like she has a good extended family setup. She'll probably be fine.

Reallytired · 03/11/2009 10:19

Its desperately sad an eleven year old marrying her rapist. Honestly if the boy saw her being bullied at school it should figure that she is a primary school child. The boy is a paedophile.

Its shocking that the parents are encouraging the relationship. I feel dread the girl and her baby being with this family. I suppose that there is no care system like the UK.

alwayslookingforanswers · 03/11/2009 10:24

Reallytired - I think the Bulagrian school system is different so she wouldn't have been in "primary" school.

EccentricaGallumBANG · 03/11/2009 10:32

oh my fucking god.

gorionine · 03/11/2009 10:32

Rhubarb, the Prophet Mohamed (PBUH) died when he was 63 years old so could not have been 80 when he married Aisha. May I also add it was over 600 hundred years ago and things have moved on a bit since?

Different sources wary quite a lot WRT the age they married. Some say she was 9 and mariage was not consumed until she was older. Some say she was 19 when they got married. I will ask for motre details to people who do know more than I do.

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 03/11/2009 10:50

thanks for explaining slattern, that makes sense

Rhubarb · 03/11/2009 10:50

Yes it was a long time ago but according to my copy of the Koran, she was 6 when he was betrothed to her, but he didn't consummate the marriage until a few years later, like you say it says she was either 9 or 11 when that happened.

I'm using him as an example of how some cultures view young girls. The fact that elderly men can take on such young brides and it's a done deal with the family, the bride herself is never consulted.

Just a few weeks ago 2 refugees went to Australia, one a 19yo who had been betrothed to a 75yo by her family, who were now trying to force her to undergo genital mutilation.

Women are seen as objects, not as human beings at all. Cultural differences aside, it should be criminalised.

gorionine · 03/11/2009 12:30

Yes Rhubarb I do realise that it is what you where trying to do but using an example that gives an inaccurate information will (to me) cast a doubt on the accuracy of other things you might say.Had you said "he was a mature man and she was very young still" It would not have bothered me at all as it does happen to be the truth.

As far as I am aware, the information regarding Aisha's age is not in the Qur'an (I might have missed it ) but in the Hadith which are a collection of things the Prophet (PBUH) used to say or do and that were reported by people who where close to him like his wives or companions.

In a video from an American Muslim scholar (Hamza Yussuf) he say that: "He was 49 and she was 9 when they were bethroted but she did not move into his house until when she gave up playing with her dolls. That (not playing anymore) was considered as having moved from being a child to being an adult.""

Not done in our society anymore but was very common and not a fact that was exeptional the small community of Muslims at the time.

I am sorry to probably seem "petty" but I felt very important to clarify as it is so very easy to perpetue misconceptions.

gorionine · 03/11/2009 12:36

Oh, and the video also mentions that Aisha had reached puberty as well by the time she moved in.
