Coming home in a cab and I heard the news. He was on holiday in Majorca. Went partying, came back, went to sleep. Never woke up.

Just read on twitter. Poor guy, my heart goes out to his partner and his family.

I saw Boyzone inJune in Glasgow for my SILs henny night. They were really good and I especially liked Stephen, he seemed to be so happy.

RTKangaMummy · 11/10/2009 13:52

We took Kangaboy to see him as Joseph many years ago and DS drew a picture to send to him and he sent him a signed photo back ~ which was very sweet of him

I saw the news on twitter this morning

KimiTheThreadSlayingAxeKiller · 11/10/2009 15:58

If a mumsnetter comes on and says they have had a bereavement we don't all go, "bet it was drugs" or something as shameful.

We don't know how this young man died, and what ever the cause it is nothing to do with us.

A little respect would not go a miss sometimes

BobbingForPeachys · 11/10/2009 16:10

Totally irrelevant what is was anyway, its the living that need the support, the dead are sadly passed. Speculation surely just punishes his family?

RIP Stephen, God bless your husband and family X

bubblegumsupermum · 11/10/2009 16:12

Sad, he's only a year younger then me, that bit scared me

R.I.P.

flyingcloud · 11/10/2009 16:54

I can't imagine how hard it must have been for him to come out, as a member of a boyband which traded on their appeal to teenage girls, and the pressure he must have been under while 'in the closet' For that I always had a huge amount of respect for him.

Horribly sad that whenever someone so young dies.

wannaBe · 11/10/2009 22:02

have always been a boyzone fan although admittedly my love is for Ronan.

It's terribly sad though.

I think it's natural for people to draw conclusions of drugs because A, drugs are rife in the music industry - in fact drugs are rife in the entertainment industry. And when someone famous dies like that drugs are very often the cause. And B, we seek a cause because nobody wants to think that someone so young can effectively just drop dead like that. That's just too close to home iyswim.

Not as bad as a comment I read on someone's facebook status: "well he was gay wasn't he? Hope it wasn't something HIV/aids related."

BobbingForPeachys · 11/10/2009 22:06

I saw worse on a friends Wannabe - the eprson whose facebook they left the comment on dealt with it though, as she'd only just lost her very young DH (not a MN user AFAIK)- I was so proud of her.

MaggieBehave · 11/10/2009 22:09

I bet when Gay Byrne was laughing kindly at them on the late late, he never thought that he'd outlive one of them. And the youngest of them. SG was the youngest. He was only 16 when he started in BZ.

He had such a poor background, he made it to the West End and played Joseph. NOt bad for a boy from Sherrif Street.

JaMmRocks · 11/10/2009 22:14

Some moron on sky news this morning was saying that the only reason that the rest of Boyzone were flying out to Majorca was so they could 'get in the papers'

There's no waiting for the facts anymore is there?

Poor guy, and sad for his husband.

That is so ridiculous. As though they have no feelings because they have a few records under their belt.

one of my favourites and one of their last hits altogether

Keith Duffy does a lot of work for AAI (autism action in Ireland) he's just back a week from raising a lot of money doing a trek in Peru. It wasn't even in the papers here.

llynnnn · 12/10/2009 07:30

rip stephen

have always loved Boyzone, grew up with them, so sad and such a waste

MaggieBehave · 12/10/2009 08:26

Actually, I've just been reading on a closed AAI type forum about how much stephen accompanied keith on fund raising events for Autism action - none of it in papers.

southeastastra · 12/10/2009 08:30

people are speculating though as the reports say natural death but a tragic accident.

MaggieBehave · 12/10/2009 08:41

just wondering, would choking on your own vomit be a natural death southeastra? i know he didnt drink, and he is a small man so he could have accidentally drunk too much..

Speculating doesn't mean you don't think it's sad btw. I think it's very sad.

Hulababy · 13/10/2009 13:29

BBC report says initial results are back and he died of natural causes - some acute fluid ont he lungs. Drink and drugs (nothing confirmed anyway but toxology reports due tomorrow) would not have contributed to his death regardless.

ilovesprouts · 13/10/2009 16:02

yes it makes me mad when ppl say drugs /drink wen it was not it was fluid on hie lungs ,poor man !!

bodycolder · 13/10/2009 16:05

Fluid on the lungs is consistent with choking on vomit I think.one of dp's close friends died like this.He had been drinking heavily though and choked in his sleep.the post mortem said fluid on lungs for him too

Hulababy · 13/10/2009 19:10

This is the BBc page. It does say on there that drink and drugs were not a cause of death in this case.

belgo · 13/10/2009 19:13

Fluid on the lungs is pulmonary oedema, caused by heart failure probably. Nothing to do with choking on vomit.

bodycolder · 13/10/2009 19:59

Pulmonary oedema can be caused by inhalation of stomach contents eg vomit.Dp'd friend def had this not neccesarily the case here

smileyboy · 14/10/2009 14:08

Disgraceful how many people immediately assumed his death was cocaine related. So.... what?... just because he happens to be a celebrity he must therefore be a careless drug addict right?? Or even if it were drug related, does that mean that you should just be 'speculating' it was even within hours of the poor bloke dying? Like it would be any less tragic or heartbreaking for his family and fans. I only hope none of his family or friends are members of mumsnet!

I was a huge Boyzone fan in the 90's, still am really. I went to see them last year and they were fantastic. I walso went to see him in Joseph in 2003 on my birthday and he was just amazing.

He meant so much to me when I was a child and I always had a soft spot for him. He always came across as such a wonderful man who meant so much to so many people. 33 is WAY too young to die.
