i didn't think she was down on him, she was funny and pretty spot on.

he's sucked royally.

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 19/06/2009 16:41

She said it was the only way a Brit could win, and I don't see how that is funny tbh.

Well he didnt win did he!

Ceebee74 · 19/06/2009 16:43

I'm with FBG here!

Yes Henman never won and was never likely to win - but you don't get to no.4 in the world without having a fair bit of talent and maybe a slight chance of winning a major tennis tournament at some point fgs. He was never going to be as good as Sampras/Federer etc but I don't think you could say he sucked (not like some of the other no-hopers we have had through the years who were world no.70 or something but still the British no.1 - step froward Andrew Castle )

littlelamb · 19/06/2009 16:43

sense of humour bypass?

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 19/06/2009 16:44

not here

BunnyLebowski · 19/06/2009 16:44

Och it's not personal FBG....it's just a major bugbear of mine. Every time there is a british presence in a sporting event the hype begins.

Both in the media and the public. Acres of relentless coverage on how they're going to win. The smugness and the unjustified expectation. Gets right on my tits.

And what happens? Almost without fail the brits do (fail that is). And then there's the wailing and gnashing of teeth and whinging about being robbed when the truth is they were actually just beaten by a better player/team.

See also the World Cup/European Cup/Olympics....

expatinscotland · 19/06/2009 16:45

he got to no. 4 once because the big guns got injured.

every time he faced a real champion, he choked big style.

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 19/06/2009 16:46

How can you say that?

We won loads of medals at the Olympics.

Anyway, off to make tea. Getting far too het up here about people criticising my fellow brits.

Henman was a talented slogger but without fire. Murray brings some much needed attitude. thats what I like in a tennis player. (still drooling over Goran)

expatinscotland · 19/06/2009 16:47

at least murray actually wins big tournaments and gets to the semi's in others.

BunnyLebowski · 19/06/2009 16:49

Oh yes moopy Goran was more than a wee bit delicious!

That's another reason I don't watch it anymore. No eye candy!

slayerette · 19/06/2009 17:39

No eye-candy??

He may not be too everyone's taste but I would like to submit the following for the defence, m'lud!

margotfonteyn · 19/06/2009 17:46

Henman's tennis is better than his commentating.

I can't wait for McEnroe's wise words.

scienceteacher · 19/06/2009 17:55

What do you mean Murray isn't British, FBG?

Anyway, Murray has beaten Nadal before, so has as much chance of doing it again.

Go Muzzah!

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 19/06/2009 17:58

It was a mistake scienceteacher. I got my British and English mixed up.

OP posts:
scienceteacher · 19/06/2009 18:13

Well is anyone even claiming that he is English?

WhipsAndFurs · 19/06/2009 18:26

If Nadal pulls out of Wimbledon then Federer will win [hopeful emoticon]

I dislike Murray's aggressive style, all that inane punching of the air, primate teeth-baring and pant-hoots [gah]

Go Roger!

notevenamousie · 19/06/2009 18:37

It's not just hype, Murray is actually good.
Unlike Henman, bless him. I think his commentating is getting better tho tbh.
Never really enjoyed Henmania but loving this years Wimbledon buildup!

daftpunk · 19/06/2009 18:43

tim henman was a very good tennis player and has done a lot for british tennis....like to see some of you lot hit a ball over the net......ha bloody ha..

murray is an arse.

Lizzylou · 19/06/2009 18:47

I miss Tim Henman, he always gave us something to get excited about at Wimbledon and I think actually punched above his weight and rose to the occasion.
NO, he wasn't the best tennis player in the whole world ever, but he had a whole hill named after him

I hope Andy Murray does win, it would be great to have a British winner.

BunnyLebowski · 19/06/2009 18:48

slayerette - yes to the body but the face is just a wee bit too newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42318000/jpg/_42318822_mockup250_bbc.jpg for me!

alarkaspree · 19/06/2009 18:51

I think Henman was unfortunate to have all that hype about Brits winning Wimbledon heaped on his shoulders. Of course he felt obliged every year to say that he thought he could win. I'm sure he never believed it. He was a very good player, but there were always at least 3 players who were better than him at any one time. That's nothing to be ashamed of is it?

daftpunk · 19/06/2009 18:52

i hate it when people put him down..if you actually look back over his career he did very well...and agree lizzylou, wimbledon isn't the same without him...(i go most years)

expatinscotland · 19/06/2009 19:12

'wimbledon isn't the same without him...'

yes, thankfully. can do without having those huge, horsey teeth splashed all over the screen.

at least he never lasted very long so we didn't have to endure him the entire time.
