I have just seen that there is a proposal that it should be banned (as it is in some countries) given the concentration of toxins in a limited space.

What do you think?

ROFL fallenmadonna nicely made point.

I wonder what the mix of oxygen to other components used in hospital breathing equipment is? As too much oxygen is none too good for you...

And all those poor people living at high altitudes...

TheFallenMadonna · 21/06/2009 18:22

Now, people can can have opinions on all sorts for all sorts of reasons. But when they start calling them Science, then they need to provide the evidence. By definition really.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 21/06/2009 18:25

OK so what you are saying here Atlantis is basically that we are obliged to believe any assertion no matter how absurd made by any poster on Mumsnet, no matter how unbalanced unless we are prepared to go off and disprove it.
Well, I'll start. The moon is made of green cheese. Fact.

LovelyTinOfSpam · 21/06/2009 18:27

I quite enjoy atlantis' refreshing scientific debate style.

Not rigorous, or logical, or even containing a trace of rational thought, but quite entertaining

atlantis · 21/06/2009 18:31

Actually I do not care whether you believe anything anyone says to you, the difference between us is while I notice you have been on the net slating posters all day I have been out with my kids enjoying myself.

That's the difference between a mother and a mum I guess.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 21/06/2009 18:39

Snort! Once you descend to ad hominem attacks you have lost the war.
Anyway, you have no idea what my children have been doing all day.
Actually, come to think of it...

theloneposter · 21/06/2009 18:40

lol LGP

atlantis · 21/06/2009 18:41

Obviously not reading the latin dictionary as you have swallowed it.

Tortington · 21/06/2009 18:56

proof atlanta!

LovelyTinOfSpam · 21/06/2009 19:22

Oh shame to resort to casting aspersions on the parenting skills of others. Just when I was enjoying the points that you were making.

Tell me more about the precipitation - "As precipitation works through our system, if our oxygen levels were not decreasing the ocean would not be having a problem would it?"

What does it mean?

Tortington · 21/06/2009 19:24

...and can you provide a link atlanta?

BitOfFun · 21/06/2009 19:50

Excuse me if it's been noted already, as I've only read about three quarters of the thread, but does anyone else find it hilarious that two sockpuppets have come on to support Atlantis?

You're going to have to do better than that mate

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 21/06/2009 19:53

Don't be ridiculous BOF. They were no sockpuppets. How could they have been? Atlantis was off being a mum when they were posting. Not like the rest of us feckless mothers.

BitOfFun · 21/06/2009 19:54

"Thanks Atlantis for creating an interesting debate"

Pmsl

BitOfFun · 21/06/2009 19:55

< snort >

I'm sorry I missed this earlier

Baisey · 21/06/2009 19:55

"one of the reasons that people have started drinking oxygenated water and eating fresh vegetable's without cooking them, brings the oxygen levels up apparently."

Does this now mean if I find myself drowning I should just start drinking the water and I'll be ok??!

LovelyTinOfSpam · 21/06/2009 20:30

No baisey that would be ridiculous.

You need to quickly eat some fresh carrots and you'll be as right as rain.

Don't know why divers bother to faff around with all the tanks and everything TBH, when they could just take a couple of sticks of celery instead.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 21/06/2009 20:53

Having come to this thread late, I did actually google oxygen 50% lower than 50 years ago - and found this thread.

hereidrawtheline · 21/06/2009 21:00

Wow I have been wanting to read this thread since before dinner but I have sadly been busy parenting (sigh)

Things I believe: aspartame is not healthy. This is from my own experience of being very ill when I have had it time and time again and also from my nephew who died of cancer many years ago. His oncologist was very against aspartame and basically one thing after another DH and I have done some research and we truly feel it is a danger so we dont have it. But I understand many other people do not feel the same way - this is my personal choice.

I think smoking in a car with your child is a cruel thing to do. Why would you subject your LO to the terrible difficulty of breathing and health problems it can cause?

Now what I really want to say wrt Atlantis' first post which in a nutshell says things are so shit why bother about "a few" billions of cigarettes -

I hate this argument for making improvements on things. If you really feel that way surely suicide is the only answer because ultimately you will always find a greater problem. If we all threw in the towel and didnt attack the little and big problems we are able to make a difference with then the human race would never have advanced and it would indeed all be futile.

Now as for parents who expose their children to smoke that the children are unable to escape I say this: Would you be willing, if it were possible, to remove your child's lungs and replace them with those of an old smokers? I very much doubt any parent would do that. So if you baulk at that then just stop forcing them to breathe your smoke because it is effectively what you are heading towards.

I used to smoke, I quit before I had DS. I really hate it now, I have had pneumonia twice, and I have really bad asthma. I would be gutted if my DS smoked when he grew up because I am praying every day for his body to be fit and healthy and strong. That is surely what loving your child means isnt it?

devotion · 22/06/2009 22:37

hereidrawtheline - exactly!

I honestly can not understand how any mother can smoke around her child.

I think it should be illegal to smoke around children and for pregnant woman to smoke.

That makes me feel sick when I see a pregnant woman puffing away - how can they do that?

I use to smoke, I loved smoking at that time and I needed to smoke, I was addicted. I knew when I was going to have my next one.

If I had fallen pregnant at that time I would have stopped instantly.

When I gave up it was for my health even though I felt like i needed to smoke.

It is abuse, you are damaging your childs health and they have no say in the matter.

Smoking is bad you so its bad for your child.
