Statue to honour Jade

!!!

Apparently the council were 'bombarded' with demands from the public for a lasting tribute.

I don't think it's appropriate, it could well be downright tacky.

Or is it just me?

I'm in a parallel universe. Statues of Jade goody and Michel Jackson attending the funeral ? Someone take me away...

5intheEgg · 30/03/2009 20:33

lol Sassy.

A blue plaque, maybe?
A statue, why the bloody hell would you?

beanieb · 30/03/2009 20:33

People can be pretty bonkers can't they. Silly 'general publilc'. I bet her family just want to remember her their own way... and privately.

wickerman · 30/03/2009 20:36

Yeh, I think there should be one. We created her, we should remember her. She's such a phenomenon of (the folly of) our times. Not a blue plaque, which is for achievement, but yes, a statue.
We should complete the work we started.

georgimama · 30/03/2009 20:37

"didn't people pour scorn on van gogh whilst he lived ?"

Certainly they did. He was mad as a box of frogs.

Point me to the enduring work of art that Jade Goody has created which rivals "Sunflowers" or "Starry Night" and I'll beg to unveil the thing myself.

As someone has already said, more than once: FFS.

KingRolo · 30/03/2009 20:37

Is there a statue of dead Diana yet? I know there's an incredibly tasteful gold and diamonique memorial in Harrods.

OP posts:
georgimama · 30/03/2009 20:38

No, there's a fountain though.

KingRolo · 30/03/2009 20:40

Is that the one where they had to shut it down after a week because people kept breaking their legs slipping in it?

OP posts:
georgimama · 30/03/2009 20:41

Yup.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 30/03/2009 20:44

Put it in the Big Brother House

NotanOtter · 30/03/2009 20:46

sassy - but you can say that as you know Wills has stood the test of time

a lot of his stuff was seen as bawdy alcohol fuelled improvisation at the time

KingRolo · 30/03/2009 20:53

Otter - I was told off for saying that about WS in an essay at uni.

NotanOtter · 30/03/2009 21:11

KingRolo - but isn't it the truth?!

Did you read English ( ooh pleased with self for knowing something !)

NotPlayingAnyMore · 30/03/2009 21:24

I'm quite indifferent to this news but just wanted to point out that if a statue is erected, it will be vandalised, probably sooner rather than later as well.

janeite · 30/03/2009 21:27

Barmy.

KingRolo · 30/03/2009 22:15

Yes Otter, but my tutor said it was 'an incredibly puerile and facetious comment' and gave me a 2:2. Glad you agree with me!

My much respected ( by me and me peers!) A level English teacher Mr Bellwood taught us all about Shakespeare and how old Will was far from squeaky clean...

(plus did he even write half of it! )

mayorquimby · 31/03/2009 10:37

Is there a statue of dead Diana yet?"

no she got her fountain and a pop concert.although frankie boyle suggested that she should have gotten something more appropriate that reflected her lifes work.
if you are not easily offended you can see what he recomended here

www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmFiLttE0lk

which i still can't believe he had the balls to say on the bbc and i'm not sure dara o'briain knows what to do after he's said it

QuantitativeMeasure · 31/03/2009 10:50

This is the most ridiculous thing that I have ever heard.

If we have to start with the statues for ex BB housemates (because of course, they are on a par with the likes of Churchill, Nelson etc ) then perhaps we should start with the funny looking builder from BB1 who donated his prizemoney to charity.

In a sensible world, we wouldnt even entertain such stupid ideas, im amazed that people are seriously considering this.
Its fucking ridiculous.

2shoes · 31/03/2009 10:56

we had a statue in a park of runner steve ovette(at least he did something)
and it got stolen

ingles2 · 31/03/2009 11:04

Oh FFS! That's just ridiculous!
What has she achieved that is worthy of that sort of honour?
It's terribly sad for her family and sons that she's died but this is just madness.

AitchTwoOh · 31/03/2009 11:07

aw, i think if the people of bermondsey really do want it, they should have one. they're obviously proud of her.

seeker · 31/03/2009 11:55

Presumably this is an early April Fool?

SoupDreggon · 31/03/2009 11:56

I have yet to find a quote which says she is to have a statue.

The only quote is "The council has plans for the Dickens Estate area where Jade grew up, and I'm sure we could do something."
