Statue to honour Jade

!!!

Apparently the council were 'bombarded' with demands from the public for a lasting tribute.

I don't think it's appropriate, it could well be downright tacky.

Or is it just me?

while her death was tragic for her family and friends and it is terrible that children have been left without a mother, the idea of a statue is ridiculous. People die. It is an awful loss for those who know and love them, but it's just life. If she brought about world peace, or was a world leader of note, or invented a cure for the common cold....then a staute would be appropriate.

sassy · 30/03/2009 18:24

Idly musing what the statue would show

-Screaming rant at Shilpa Shetty, finger poised?
-Naked with her kebab out?

purepurple · 30/03/2009 18:24

I would quite like my local council to sort out my back street, there is lots of flytipped stuff there

oh, and then they could re-open the swimming pool they shut down because it is too expensive, apparently, to keep it open

then, they can do something about the druggies and winos

and there is a 1001 other things I could think of

our local counci has just put up a statue of Les Dawson, and he has been dead donkey's years

I can just imagine in 50 years time little kids looking at a statue of Jade Goody and saying "Who's that Mum?"

and the mum replies "Some stupid woman off the tv who got ill then died"

hardly merits a ststue does it?

scrooged · 30/03/2009 18:29

Derby wants a statue of Brian Clough! Why oh why??????? I'm not sure what the lesser of the two would be TBH.

LilyBolero · 30/03/2009 18:33

A statue should commemorate someone's life, not their death.

SoupDreggon · 30/03/2009 18:33

Where in that article does it say there will be a statue other than the headline?? The councillor said "I'm sure we could do something" which probably means one of those blue plaques.

giraffescantdancethetango · 30/03/2009 18:35
Hmm
sassy · 30/03/2009 18:36

You are quite right Soupy. It will be a blue plaque or perhaps a bench, I am sure

seeker · 30/03/2009 18:38

A blue plaque? Oh, ffs!!!!!

HecAteTheEasterBunny · 30/03/2009 18:39

What is "street smart" ?

"jade was warm, street-smart.."

does it mean dim? Or able to handle self in street?

random · 30/03/2009 18:40

quite quite mad

[shakes head)

NotmyELFtoday · 30/03/2009 18:50

Derby cant have a statue of Brian Clough because nottingham have one
I walk past it every day. I guess I should actually learn who Brian Clough is...

SoupDreggon · 30/03/2009 18:52

Lots of strange people have blue plaques.

seeker · 30/03/2009 19:10

I am prepared to bet that NO ONE has ever got a blue plaque without achieving SOMETHING!!

KingRolo · 30/03/2009 19:12

There is a statue of Eric Morecambe in Morecambe. Now that's appropriate.

I think you have to be dead a while (25 years?) to get a real blue plaque. In a way I would argue that's quite a wise, if rigid, rule and statues/other permanant tributes should probably be decided on in the fullness of time. Mind you, if we have to have a new statue I really don't see why it shouldn't be a young 21st century woman who captured the spirit of the times for good and ill. In London we have a plethora of less than fab statues of obscure military personnel from other centuries who are certainly no more worthy than Jade, imo. Considerably less so, sometimes, and there in many instances only by an accident of their birth whereas Jade pulled her way up by her own and the media's bootstrings.

morningpaper · 30/03/2009 19:25

hmmm well it's no different to one of the Queen Mother IMO

At least Jade didn't actually live it up on Taxpayer's money

ScummyMummy · 30/03/2009 19:30

v true, mp.

HecAteTheEasterBunny · 30/03/2009 19:59

i don't think there should be one for royalty either! A statue for an accident of birth or for marrying someone who was who they were due to nothing more than that accident of birth? nah.

ghandi
nelson mandella
marie curie (as said above)
hell, richard bloody branson! at least what he has he earned!

NotanOtter · 30/03/2009 20:02

didn't people pour scorn on van gogh whilst he lived ?

mendel too

shakespeare has statues up everywhere

seeker · 30/03/2009 20:10

Van Gogh? Mendel? Shakespeare? Oh ffs!

NotanOtter · 30/03/2009 20:12

it is popular 'culture' seeker

sassy · 30/03/2009 20:13

My dear otter, I think it is possible that what Shakespeare created may have a little more longevity than Jade's gifts to the world. Just maybe.

smallorange · 30/03/2009 20:14

Am definitely emigrating.

SoupDreggon · 30/03/2009 20:26

I'm not sure that the "inventor" of daylight saving warrents one more than Jade who, whatever her faults, has managed to raise awareness of cervical cancer and the fact that it does kill. I wouldn't really say that Keith Moon who "lived a destructive lifestyle" is a great choice for a blue plaque either. There are innumerable people I've never heard of too.

I'm not a huge fan and have no real opinion one way or another. I tend to be of the "why not" school of thought.
