i knew a mother who would say that if anything happened to her and she knew she was going to die then she would take her daughter, who is severely disabled, with her.
she didnt think anyone would look after her as well after she'd gone, even her husband.

My mum has suffered from manic depression all her life and when my brother and i were younger she used to say the world was a horrible place and that if she thought it was too bad for us she would take us with her!
She meant "harm us".
We used to lock ourselves in our rooms at night as she used to go on a bender most nights (self-medication) but we were safe if dad was at home.
If he had to go out in the evening she would be up at our door hammering for us to come out. We never did.
This was during a particularly bad depressive episode that lasted about 3 months when i was 16yrs old. I'm just glad she did not get like that when we were babies or toddlers.

Can I just point out that I am not speculating on her reasons for doing what she has done, I haven't throughout this thread. Rather, I am suggesting that this kind of presumption is not fair.

They are appealing for a man she was seen with to come forward - it may still be murder at this stage. We don't know the facts and that's my point.

I didn't like the way everyone just immediately presumed that she was mentally ill.

glittery - was the mother you refer to suffering from a mental illness? I think to say something like that, calmly and collectively is appauling. My mother has said it about my brother and it is extremely selfish. Do they honestly think that their child has no right to life without them, that they would lose any purpose or meaning in their lives without them?

If my mother ever did anything to my brother I would hope that she would be seen as a murderer, for that is what she would be.

They were found in the lake where we sail - no details from the police - gives me a bit of a creepy thought when I even think about sailing there now.

rhubarb, sadly no, she seems perfectly sane just wanted to emphasize that its not just people with mental health problems who think these thoughts IYKWIM?

I do glittery and I completely agree with you.

Good lord that is an awful thing to say so rationally - that she would Murder her child? What makes anyone think they have the right to do this to another person Parent or not, Disability or not?

glitteryb6 · 19/03/2009 13:31

strange thing is, she is a really nice person and doting mother who would do anything for her kids i guess she just thinks it would be for the best?
although i do think it might have been better keeping it to herself!
