have we got a thread yet about the Daily Express's "story" about Dunblane survivors?

They've pulled the article from their website, but this should link to it

So, kids behave like kids and get blasted for it in a national newspaper. And that's news?????

Crap, lazy, sensationalist reporting imho

Couldn't actually finish reading the article, it was that crap.

The Express should be ashamed of itself.

FWIW I think it is pretty amazing that these children have grown into fairly typical teenagers.

I grew up nearish Dunblane and we used to swear all the time and get pissed. Grew out of it as they will too.

Comewhinewithme · 13/03/2009 14:18

How horrific that she thinks she has any right to invade their privacy in this way .

I for one think good on them for getting on with their life and enjoying every moment .

She probably badgered them to do an interview you know "My survivor hell" and all that and they told her to bugger off so she has wrote this shitey article .

whitecoffeenosugar · 13/03/2009 19:33

I don't condone the article at all but I also object to many of you calling this kind of teenage behaviour normal, expected and kids being kids. No hope for our society when grown ups seem to condone it , trivialize and normalize. And I suspect it is because many mumsnetters themselves see nothing wrong at all in gratitious swearing, getting drunk and being promiscuous.
My teenage sons are actually fabulously 'saintly' and not a bit boring with it.

Thunderduck · 13/03/2009 19:35

What an idiotic article. I'm just grateful that they are alive to do these things.

Thunderduck · 13/03/2009 19:36

I don't think what they're doing is right, but they aren't the only teens who do it, and much of it may be boasting and hyperbole.

Sorrento · 13/03/2009 19:40

The granny's are a bit upset because they think if their grandchild had survived they wouldn't behave like that, they probably would. It's a none story.

frumpygrumpy · 16/03/2009 11:26

Sorry to drag up the thread again when it has come to a natural end but I wanted to reply to whitecoffee.....

I don't think any of us condoned the behaviour. We were saying that some teenagers do this and that they will likely grow out of this stage just as some children tantrum and grow out of that stage.

Its great your boys are "saintly", but I expect this could be referred to the nature/nurture debate. Are they "saintly" because its down to how you have raised them or is that what your boys have inside them?

From experience, my vote would say your boys are like this on the inside. Some kids will try smoking even if they have been brought up in a smoke free house. And some never smoke even when their parents have.

Anyway, I'm not arguing with you, I am merely pointing out that we didn't condone the behaviour

solidgoldbrass · 18/03/2009 16:19

Whatever these teenagers do, they are entitled to do (within the law; if they break the law they should, like anyone else, take the consequences). There is no reason for other people to treat them as only and entirely definted by the random act of a madman 15 years ago.
Poor little sods.

georgimama · 18/03/2009 16:38

Could I just say that the Tory MEP quoted was not told that these were Dunblane survivors, she was just shown a selection of teenager's Beebo pages and just asked for a general about social networking sites that any politician will trot out on demand like one of Pavlov's dogs.

She was apparently horrified when she found out how her comments were going to be used.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 18/03/2009 16:40

Ah that's what Gorgonsgin guessed. Good.

The Press Complaints Commission is investigating apparently.

georgimama · 18/03/2009 19:25

She may be one of the people who complained to the PCC of course - two of the complaints were from people mentioned in the article.

Disgusting gutter press. I thought the Express was low but this is truly appalling. They have totally lost their grip between public interest, and what the public might find a prurient interest in.

harpsichordcarrier · 18/03/2009 19:26

I hope that reporter burns in hell.
scum.

solidgoldbrass · 18/03/2009 20:34

It is utterly fucking deranged. I used to think the News International papers were the worst for loopy, mawkish, fuckwitted shitstirring (hence me never, ever buying them, or having Sky TV) but this is... even worse than a lot of Daily Mail editorialising.

yama · 18/03/2009 20:45

I read this at my parents house and was shocked.

I actually assumed that it was front page 'news' in Scotland only.

Every time I visit my parents and pick up their Express I want to shout 'IT'S NOT NEWS!' at every page.

georgimama · 18/03/2009 20:47

I haven't glanced at a copy of the Express for a long time.

Do they still have Madeleine McCann/Princess Diana on the front page on alternate days?

purepurple · 18/03/2009 20:51

AS a mother of a 19 year old I am glad that these children have grown up and have managed to turn out fairly normal, and yes it is normal teenage behaviour

and I actually feel very disturbed by that sinister non-news news story

that paper is not fit to wipe my arse with

gagamama · 19/03/2009 09:39

What a horrendous piece of 'reporting'. And how is an 18-year-old liking take-aways and using cheesy chat-up lines 'shaming' the memory of his former classmates? Beyond ridiculous.

I reckon if any teenagers are excused from getting totally sozzled to block out the 'horror' of their pasts, it would be them. They have more excuse than most, not less!

BouncingTurtle · 19/03/2009 19:52

What a bunch of utter tossers

The Daily Express people responsible for this pile of garbage, I mean!

They're just normal kids, ffs. I'm sure they feel very lucky having been shot at and watch their classmates and teacher die in front of them

I hope the PCC takes this very fucking seriously
