There is quite a bit in the New Testament about celibacy so it's not strictly true to say it wasn't part of the original church. St. Paul bangs on about it a lot.

JoolsToo · 01/04/2005 11:03

helloooooooooooooo - has he died?

Snugs · 01/04/2005 11:03

No

LGJ · 01/04/2005 11:03

JT

No he is still alive, but only just by all accounts, how intrusive the media is these days.

I am sure, Pope Paul VI didn't have to endure this media scrum.

4 mins ago - vatican deny report of pope in a coma

morningpaper · 01/04/2005 11:04

(I once got flamed on an American discussion board for using the word geezer - don't think it has any negative connotations does it?)

LGJ · 01/04/2005 11:05

MP

No, as I said it is just my opinion,I just think it sounds disrespectful.

expatinscotland · 01/04/2005 11:06

It was practiced among ascetics, morningpaper. But it was never expressly forbidden to not be celibate. Paul's words were used to support universal celibacy.

Donbean · 01/04/2005 11:09

Its a very English word "geezer" but still probably innapropriate for this situation...he is Holy after all.......however, if i were to have met him, i would probably have described him as ...."a very nice old geezer". And meant nothing but pleasant things by it.
Hmmmm, so... the pope, not bieng allowed to die in peace in the night, what did you say you thought of that?

Snugs · 01/04/2005 11:13

"geezer

n : a man who is (usually) old and/or eccentric"

Maybe it's the eccentric bit that people object to Donbean.

LIZS · 01/04/2005 11:14

update due from Vatican at 11.30 bst

LGJ · 01/04/2005 11:15

I think that even to the end the position is being manipulated.

My post last night.

Felt embarrased, at the way the poor man was wheeled out to perform over Easter.

Donbean · 01/04/2005 11:15

sigh, not an objection, just LGJ voicing a very valid opinion.
From here on in i shall refer to him as an elderly gentleman.
Thanks though for definition, i love the word eccentric, its lovely x

LGJ · 01/04/2005 11:16

Oh God

I wish I never said anything with regard to geezer.

Sorry Donbean.

PsychoFlame · 01/04/2005 11:17

I aim to grow old and be eccentric... would hate to be a boring old lady (whether I'm pope or not )

Flame

xxxx

Donbean · 01/04/2005 11:17

HEheheheh! no probs, dont apologise,no problem at all!

ScummyMummy · 01/04/2005 11:21

Eccentric is a fab word too. I shall make it my aim to become a female geezer- is there such a thing? A geezerelle perhaps, or a geezerette? An old eccentric woman sounds like a good thing to be.

Poor pope. I hope he dies peacefully.

Donbean · 01/04/2005 11:21

OMG... i killed the pope thread, that has to be ultimate in thread killing!!!!!!

LGJ · 01/04/2005 11:24

Donbean

I am PMSL, probably shouldn't say that on a Pope thread either.

Donbean · 01/04/2005 11:24

Ok, ive got to go to work now and i feel like im skating on thin ice with this thread so i am going to graciously bow out as this started up as a serious and touching discussion until i interfered.
If i have offended any one as regards to this thread, i am truly sorry.
ps sorry for spelling horrors,am tired x

Snugs · 01/04/2005 11:25

Sorry, I should have said morningpaper not Donbean - I was referring to getting flamed on an american site.

Eccentricity is regarded as loveable in the UK (can I join you as a geezerette SM?) but I don't think it is held in the same regard elsewhere.

Donbean · 01/04/2005 11:26

bye geezerettes, speak soon, take care x

LGJ · 01/04/2005 11:26

Donbean,

Do not apologise, it is a great place and every one is entitled to their own opinion.

Dare you to tell them in work you killed the Pope thread.

You will get some funny looks.
