Tory expelled for dressing as Madeleine McCann

Here

Does the reaction strike anyone else as a little OTT? Of course it's in bad taste, but the point of the evening was that it was a Bad Taste Party. Friends of mine have been to these dressed in a variety of outfits (Nazi uniforms - the party was held by Jewish people in a Jewish area), one went dressed as an anorexic, two people stuck themselves together as conjoined twins.

Obviously it's sick and twisted, but that's the point of the party. A black sense of humour sometimes helps people get through life.

Will probably get flamed for this but I think it's a bit of an over-reaction to boot someone out of the Tory Party for going to a Bad Taste Party wearing something in bad taste. Mind you, the guy was an idiot for posting photos on facebook if he aspired to a political career

OP posts:

he was a prat for posting it on facebook. nothing suprises me when rich kids go to parties anymore. (thinks of super sweet 16)

spongebrainbigpants · 09/01/2009 19:25

A total arsehole in the Tory party? What a surprise .

Horrendous thing to do. Yes, he should have been sacked, what a total total prick.

Doobydoo · 09/01/2009 19:25

If I ever have the misfortune to go to a bad taste party,I shall dress as a ToryI was going to suggest dressing as Brian Cowen[Irish PM]...Think toad of toad hall.

Katiestar · 09/01/2009 19:32

Its is ridiculous and totally inaccurate MM would never have been at a party. She would have been at home babysitting her siblings.

Bubble99 · 09/01/2009 19:32

I'm also wondering how he dressed up as Madeleine McCann.

I agree. Totally yuk.

AuraofDora · 09/01/2009 19:36

tasteless yes

but who on earth is Flick Cox?
what a brilliant name..

ravenAK · 09/01/2009 19:39

Young Conservative turns out to be a wanker? Who'd a thought it, eh?

I do think that's deeply offensive & inappropriate.

( @ his mate little miss 'I'm going to be an MP when I grow up')

ThingOne · 09/01/2009 19:42

Raven - just what I was going to say. No surprises there, then. Tory students have always had a very high wanker quotient.

MadamAnt · 09/01/2009 19:43

Lulumama said what I wanted to say...but better

seeker · 09/01/2009 19:50

Just remember this if you are tempeted to vote for them at the next election.

tiredemma · 09/01/2009 19:51

I did go to a 'bad taste' party once where there was a woman dressed as Lady Di but with a steering wheel around her head and a man dressed as Superman in a wheelchair.

we were

We thought bad taste meant badly dressed so dressed in 80's gear

tigermoth · 09/01/2009 20:04

I think the OP's last sentence sums it up. The guy was an idiot for posting photos on facebook if he aspired to a politial career.

For that alone I can see why he would be expelled from the Tory party - the McCann case is so high profile and relatively recent.

If he could not see the implications of putting his extremely bad taste joke in the public domain on the internet, then he needs to re-think his career options.

It's not so much the bad taste party, not even so much the person he chose to portray, it's the naivity of him posting it all on facebook IMO

Nighbynight · 09/01/2009 20:04

seeker, be fair, they did expel him!

Reminds me why I never got on with young conservatives,

brimfull · 09/01/2009 20:14

complete fuckwit

deserved to be expelled from the party

nickytwotimes · 09/01/2009 20:19

Jesus.
Way beyond bad taste.
Most things are fine as topics of humour for me, but crimes against children are over the line.

tigermoth · 09/01/2009 20:30

hello nightbynight (quick hijack!)

Got to go and get supper now....

NormaJeanBaker · 09/01/2009 20:32

Lulumama - I think he dressed as Madelaine Mcann, not Baby P. That makes it so much better.

noonki · 09/01/2009 20:34

I too went to a party with a princess di, dead person.

but this is on another level.

LittleBella · 09/01/2009 20:39

He looks like a tosser as well

NormaJeanBaker · 09/01/2009 20:50

Seeker - the Young Cons are in agreement - they are the ones who chucked him out remember?

There are lots of wankers who are young Tories, also some earnest serious minded young people. There are also lots of wankers who are young socialists, and some earnest serious minded ones. Guess that's the thing with being young - except - guess what?! Some older Tories and older socialists are wankers too!

So next time you vote... Remember - some people are wankers! Any one else got any helpful tips to aid the democratic process?

NorbertDentressangle · 09/01/2009 20:56

tiredemma - I was about to post what you did.

When I went to a bad taste party as a student I wore some nasty garish outfit that I bought from a charity shop (imagine clashing colours, combination of stripes and checks etc).

NormaJeanBaker · 09/01/2009 21:04

I went dressed as marzipan.

Lulumama · 09/01/2009 21:25

someone else went dressed as babyP according to the article
regardless, the whole thing is a disgrace and

NormaJeanBaker · 10/01/2009 00:28

I agree - how come the BabyP person was seen as being more tasteful than the Maddy McCann person? Weird.

solidgoldsoddingjanuaryagain · 10/01/2009 00:40

I think that it's not too sensible to expect the general public to appreciate shocking/dark humour if you want to stand for election (remember that the majority of the general public are sentimentalists and don't really like to have to think for themselves, so give them the slightest excuse to have a foaming fit of self-righteousness and they'll take it).
However, I don't see anything wrong with going to a fancy dress party as Madeleine McCann, Baby P, Peter Sutcliffe or Robert Mugabe if you're going to be among other people who like shocking/taboo busting humour (and are not among the personally affected by whatever you're lampooning). But then I don't think anyone or anything is automatically exempt from criticism, satire or witless tasteless joking.
