30,000 jobs to go before Christmas

I just popped my head through the door this morning - and popped it right back out again. It was like a scene from Hell.

I went in this morning and nothing was reduced any more than it was earlier in the week (20% off toys and clothes). The big 50% off everything sign at the door has an "up to" bit on it in very small writing up in the corner and I don't think I saw anything with 50% off.
They were still putting toys on the shelves so my shop obviously still has quite a bit to sell.
It is such a shame it's closing completely. I thought the ones in small towns would maybe stay but it doesn't look like it.

I went in today in Watford and bought 4 items - it most definitely wasn't 50% off everything - 2 items I got 20% off and the other 2, 30% off.

And I noticed that the Guitar Hero game is still more expensive than in the Argos next door.

The queues were long, people only had one of 2 items in their baskets, only a few had full baskets. I didn't have time to look or stand in a long queue, so I walked in and out again empty handed. Not everything had 50 per cent off. Most were 20 or 30 off.

Agree with the other poster who said Woolworths should have been bailed out like some of the banks. I'm really going to miss it.

very sad for the staff..i wouldn't go to the closing down sales....would feel like a vulture

If you are going bargain-hunting at Woolies, please do be nice to the staff. I'm a university lecturer and I had a student who works part-time in Woolies crying in my office this morning, both because she is worried about how she will manage financially once her job has gone, and because many shoppers have been (in her words) 'completely horrible' to her.

I can't imagine why anyone would be horrid, that's just mean isn't it. Poor soul.

Now.... if the go into administration.... doesn't it mean that the more sales they have (of both stock and other assets) they make,the more debts they'll clear, which means there's more likely to be money left after aying off tax office / etc so to pay redundancies? I know a very little about redundancies but a smidgen about preferentuial creditors through old job at VAT offic many moons ago (back when they were a separate entitly!)

If thats the case then its the opposite of being a vulture you might argue?

Although can't say I'm going either way, just no money for non-essentials.

our Woolies is staffed by lots of students who are without fail charming and polite and friendly - am very sad for them and of course the other staff members

I almost gave the lady a hug on the tills today, it was 4pm and she'd only had 15mins break all day.

I went in today to use up my xmas vouchers.
Was packed out and it was the same up to 50% off sale that's been on for over a week
Most things were 20% off !
