30,000 jobs to go before Christmas

ssd - another shop shut in my town recently, had been there for 100 years, one of these oldfashioned haberdashery shops and the staff were trying valiently to the end to sell the stuff. I actually bought one of the wire display baskets to turn into a toy dump for my little girl (they were even selling off the fixtures and fittings!). The owner will do nicely out of it closing though as he's going to convert the premises into flats.

nancy75 · 10/12/2008 21:56

i think it been reported that tesco/sainsburys have said they are interested in alot of the sites. they are usually about the right size for their express type stores.
can i second what somebody else said earlier, if you go to woolies tomorrow and its hours of queues and hot and horrible please dont take it out on the staff! its shit working in retail at xmas, i can only imagine how horrible it must be to go through the whole xmas/sale nightmare knowing you probably wont have a job at the end of the month. be nice everybody!

whomovedmychocolate · 10/12/2008 21:57

GoldFAQ - bugger they've all gone - ignore me! I got one for my nephew earlier.

wannaBe · 10/12/2008 21:58

sorry but I think ssd has a point.

Not that those of us hoping for a bargain are vultures, but that these types of sales do tend to attract the worst types of people.

you get them in all sales, I was reading last week about customers having punch-ups in m&s a couple of weeks ago when they had their 20% off sales.

There will be people that will grab everything they can and will probably just throw what they don't want on the floor, with no regard for the staff who have to smile/be nice to them even though they'll be losing their jobs next week.

They are vultures, pure and simple.

TwoIfBySea · 10/12/2008 21:59

I was in my local Woolies last week and had asked the staff if they were staying open. They said yes.

I don't see myself as a vulture, I've shopped in Woolies for years and am very sad to see it go. I'd have spent money in there for Christmas anyway but I noticed last week the shop was the busiest I had ever seen it. So perhaps that is what ssd means by vultures, people who would never shop there but will turn up to buy the clearance stuff.

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 10/12/2008 22:01

I would be surprised if Tesco took this site, it's been a couple of years since they closed their town centre store down as it wasn't profitable for them. Their old site inside the "shopping centre" is still empty now!

I don't think there'll be many vultures in our local Woolies - it's about the best place to shop for general stuff/toys we've got !

LynetteScavo · 10/12/2008 22:02

So many shops in our town have closed already. If Woolies goes the place will be a ghost town!

SparklyBaubleFeast · 10/12/2008 22:02

i am very sad about woolies closing, it is about the only good thing about my nearest town. aside from the new tescos which i hold responsible.
i have been shopping there for years. admittedly less more recently, but it has always been a great place for all sorts of presents and household goods.

noiamnot · 10/12/2008 22:07

is this the same for all their shops worldwide?

nancy75 · 10/12/2008 22:08

i dont think they have shops world wide, the woolworths in australia is not the same company, just same name afaik

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 10/12/2008 22:19

Woolies in Zimbabwe wasn't the same company - had quite a shock walking into the Harare Woolies and finding something totally diferent from what I was expecting

noiamnot · 10/12/2008 22:23

go on, tell us then....

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 10/12/2008 22:26

well there were no toys/cds/books to be seen.

From the bit I saw it was all womans clothes and haberdashery stuff lol

noiamnot · 10/12/2008 22:40

disappointed....

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 10/12/2008 22:42

yes I was rather - I'd gone looking for a birthday present for a friend's DD

The best shop was "Harrods" though - it sold the biggest amount of tat you've ever seen in your life

Simplysally · 10/12/2008 23:39

I think Woolworths in Australia is more akin to a supermarket here iyswim.

I wonder if the brand will live on there?

C & A are still around on the continent.

elkiedee · 11/12/2008 00:02

I'll miss Woolworths, I used to go there a lot in my teens, but not so much in between until DS was born - they've been handy for baby clothes, cheap DVDs and other bits and pieces.

Pan · 11/12/2008 00:07

Am a bit atthe vultures ref. to consumers. We exist in the buying environment, where grabbing stuff is encouraged. Bollocks to who hurts. That's capitalism for you, if you hadn't noticed.

But yes, being a Woolies staff member will be a professional test in the coming weeks.

wannaBe · 11/12/2008 07:10

woolworths in south africa is like m&s - well it was when i lived there..

saltire · 11/12/2008 07:44

Poor staff - fio works there doesn't she .
I second what someone said about if you are in a long queue, don't start blaming the staff, it's not their fault the place is having a closing down sale or has gone bust.
The wife of one of DH's colleagues works worked in MFI. When it was announced a couple of weeks aobut their closure, people were going in and swearing, spitting at her, and one man was arrested for hitting her!
I shall go into Wollies Today , but had a good look round on Wednesday and TBH there is nothing more I need to get

ssd · 11/12/2008 13:08

you lot can stop getting your knickers in a twist about my vulture comment, who are we kidding? the vultures will be in there today, people who don't go near the palce but will go in to get a bargain, mess up the place, be cows to the staff then moan about the state of the place

not that I'm saying any of you would no that

ssd · 11/12/2008 13:09

anyway, why is the government not bailing out woolies like it did the banks?

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 11/12/2008 13:13

ssd - trust me - there will be very few people in my Woolies today who don't usually go in there. We have an extremely limited shop selection. Wilko's or Woolies - if you see someone in town with more than 2 shopping bags you can almost guarantee that one of them bags will be one of those.

In fact they're both always packed - gawd knows what Wilko's is going to be like when Woolies goes

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 11/12/2008 13:16

oh - and there's always stuff on the floor and people complaining aboutt the queues anyhow in ours - no don't suppose today would have been that much different to any other day

ssd · 11/12/2008 13:45

true!
