Are all of the stores closing ?

DoubleBluff · 10/12/2008 17:37

a good friend of mine's husband is a store manager, they are so worried. And I am for them. So awful

roundcornvirgin · 10/12/2008 17:38
Sad

News story here

morningpaper · 10/12/2008 20:53

shame

If you buy stuff, take it out of the packet and check it's all intact and working - because you won't be able to take it back!!!

Sparkler · 10/12/2008 20:59

I went into Woollies last week when they had their 50% off day only to find out it was actually UP TO 50% off and most things were only 10 or 20% off.
Will say that when I went up to the checkout to pay my heart went out to the staff and I almost had a guilty feeling for being pleased with my small saving when those poor people are going to be out of a job.
It's so unfair - it's always this time of year when these terrible things happen. A friend of mine is waiting to hear about redundancy from her company at the moment - she's barely sleeping for worry at the moment.

UnquietDad · 10/12/2008 21:01

Someone I correspond with told me that their local Woolies is already half-empty, with no decent stuff and only shabby reduced-price tat left on the shelves.

I don't think the sale has started; that's just how it usually is.

LilySwalLoosHerTurkeyBaster · 10/12/2008 21:02

so my gran just gave us all, our xmas vouchers for woolies as going to have to spend them now!
I know a couple of families who this means an awful xmas for !
Can't imagine it's going to be easy getting another job in retail either.

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 10/12/2008 21:02

I noticed today in town that our Woolies has big 50% off everything signs on the windows.

I get my CTC into my account tomorrow (my biggest income of the month) so I'm off for some last minute little bits and pieces for the DS's - or more precisely anything Hotwheels (for DS1)

ssd · 10/12/2008 21:28

poor buggers all losong their jobs, and the vultures will be in tomorrow

christMAScomesbutonceayear · 10/12/2008 21:29

our Woollies is practically empty, esp in the housewares bit - it's so sad, poor people.

noiamnot · 10/12/2008 21:30

well do you expect no one to show up for the clearance sale ssd?

nancy75 · 10/12/2008 21:31

not really vultures ssd, woolies is in such a bad way they probably need to sell the stock inorder to pay the staff at the end of t he month.

morningpaper · 10/12/2008 21:31

I don't think it will actually HELP if no one buys the stuff

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 10/12/2008 21:32

sorry didn't realise that trying to get my DS's a couple of small presents to open of their own was considered "vulturish" -I would have been going shopping soon anyhow, but as Woolies and Argos are the only options for buying toys in town I figured I'd better go tomorrow so that I can get them something

Simplysally · 10/12/2008 21:34

I went in Woolies last week and it was so crowded, I walked out again. It's a real shame as my local ones were quite good and the staff must be so gutted.

It seems worse somehow when the store name has been around forever although I suspect a few people would be glad to see Tescos come a cropper .

ssd · 10/12/2008 21:44

didn't mean that to anyone, sorry

just reminded me of when I worked in a shop and we went bust, the sale went on for ages until the last skirt was sold and meanwhile we had to be nice and offer good customer service to the people picking stuff up and throwing it on the floor

noonki · 10/12/2008 21:45

poor staff. Looks like they are going to shut it all down and sell off the sites as they are mainly in prime locations, so will make more money that way.

I shall go and grab a few pick and mix for old times sake.

IdrisTheDragon · 10/12/2008 21:47

Have just remembered I have some Woolies vouchers

whitebeacheshasathing4santa · 10/12/2008 21:47

i think it's nasty to say vultures we all feel for these people losing their jobs but unfortunately we are all pretty much in the same boat at the moment and am sure that the staff at woolworths however sad they are to be losing their jobs will also understand that for some people 50 %off means that some families may be able to have a good christmas and as someone else said maybe garauntee them some kind of wage.
the only thing i would like to say is that i think we all ought to be that little but more freindlier and sympatheitic when paying for our goods at the tills

ja9ladiesdancing · 10/12/2008 21:49

yes i had vouchers too and swiftly marched ds into town earlier this week to spend them. sale was rubbish but he is delighted with his new Mr Men socks and other underwear!

will really miss WW - will leave a big hole in our town.

LilySwalLoosHerTurkeyBaster · 10/12/2008 21:50

I saw someone buy a mini woolworths plastic kiddy store in ours will likely be a collectors item in time

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 10/12/2008 21:52

going to leave a massive hole in our (already pretty dire) town - the "block" that WW is on has Barclays on one end, what used to be a Jewellers but they moved to cheap premises (but I noticed today is becoming a BHF shop - yipeee another charity shop), and then WW's - don't know who's going to take that space up - it's quite a decent sized on and it's going to make the whole street look decidely bare and empty

whomovedmychocolate · 10/12/2008 21:55

GoldFAQ - tesco toys direct has some hot wheels on 70% off.

Actually the fact that people are still buying stuff is good because at least there will be enough cashflow to pay the staff and maybe a few of the many creditors who may well go bust if they don't get paid as well. Tis not fair to call it vulturism, it's a factor of our capitalist economy that not all businesses survive. It is bloody sad for the staff, but it can't exactly have come as a surprise, it's been in the press for nine months now that they were in a hole.
