here

Can't Thai authorities cuff this scumbag and force him on a plane back to the UK?

I thought when you were deported from somewhere that means authorties put you back on a plane for your home country and you didn't have a choice about going there?

I'm interested in how he's eating, sleeping etc. Is he proposing to spend the rest of his life living in airports and if so, how is he going to fund it/ change his clothes etc? Won't the airport authorities start charging him rent soon?

beanieb · 21/08/2008 11:21

He has money - apparently he makes thousands each year because several american sports teams use 'my gang' as a theme!

MrsTittleMouse · 21/08/2008 11:23

The BBC said that his royalties earn him around £50,000 a year. So he has plenty of cash to never have to work again.

Piffle · 21/08/2008 11:23

allegedly he is seeking assistance from British consulate/embassy
Surely deportation can be forced Christ knows they pull no punches in the uk deporting folks

lovecat · 21/08/2008 11:27

I used to know a guy who sang in a Gary Glitter tribute band - his career disappeared overnight...

I read (although it was in the Standard so how true it is remains to be seen) that he gets at least a million a year from royalties, because a lot of radio stations etc still play his songs.

Mildly interesting point this raises - I loved his music in the 70's, is it possible to divorce the music from the knowledge of what he's done?

I hope he doesn't come back here, the tabloids would be running 'Glitter-watch' on a daily basis and I don't think this git should be given any more publicity.

DaDaDa · 21/08/2008 11:32

No doubt he is a despicable creature, but I don't quite understand why there is such intense interest in him. He's not the only paedophile in the world, and far from being the only celebrity paedophile. Maybe it's the lack of contrition?

At least while he is in the public eye he poses less of a threat.

saltire · 21/08/2008 11:33

CvQ - the UK authorities can't deny him access, he's a British citizen. However once he gets here, chances are he won't be allowed to leave again

ginnny · 21/08/2008 11:43

I heard on GMTV he has a fortune of £5 million.
I can't even hear his music anymore, I turn it off if it comes on the radio, not that it is played much anymore.
I think the intense interest is caused by the fact that he has reoffended and doesn't seem to show any remorse for it. Also the stories about him and his antics (whether true or not) are so vile.

SlartyBartFast · 21/08/2008 11:43

well i havent heard any of his records played on the radio. however they do play michael jackson

thishappenedtome · 21/08/2008 11:43

Michael Jackson was cleared of all charges, wasn't he... or did I miss something?

CrushWithEyeliner · 21/08/2008 11:51

Didn't he avoid the death penalty due to the rather paltry sum the families of his victims accepted?

expatinscotland · 21/08/2008 11:51

how can the UK deny him entry to his own native country of which he is a citizen?

DaDaDa · 21/08/2008 12:04

As I understand it the Home Office actively want him back so they can monitor him; he doesn't want to return.

From BBC:
Julian Weinberg, a criminal lawyer specialising in dealing with sexual offences, said he did not think Glitter could be forced to return to the UK.

"The problem is that the government is powerless to be able to take steps to force him to come back.

"Things might have been very different if he was put on a direct flight back from Vietnam to London.

"But he hasn't been, and that's why we're in the situation that we're in now, and there's not much the government can do about it."

ConstanceWearing · 21/08/2008 12:35

I can feel a build up of swear words at the back of me throat.

Lack of contrition is right. That's what's so galling. Repulsive reptile.

suedonim · 21/08/2008 12:50

I suppose he can't help his face but he looks so arrogant.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 21/08/2008 12:56

Was there not a case a while ago about a convicted rapist being sent back to the UK from Australia?
What was so different in that case where the man was forced to come back to the UK to this, as I dont understand why he is being bounced around airports!?

Piffle · 21/08/2008 13:13

oh joy he has apparently agreed to come home to uk and will be met by police. As much for his personal safety me reckons..

onceinalifetime · 21/08/2008 13:20

Apparently he no longer earns money from royalties as he was astute/lucky enough to sell his back catalogue before he was convicted. However, he supposedly sold out for about £5m.

I am so sick of seeing him on the news - all those poor people killed in Madrid and the optimism of the Olympics and then that sleazebag

ilovemydog · 21/08/2008 13:26

He isn't being denied entry to the UK.

The problem is that he cannot be forced to get on a plane to the UK. All another country can do is deport him from their own territory.

And here's what I don't understand: when you go to check in, you have to show your passport/visa, and the airline has to be assured that you have the proper visa etc.

So, why did the airline let him board to Hong Kong?

bundle · 21/08/2008 13:44

maybe he's after the airmiles??

ConstanceWearing · 21/08/2008 13:51
Elffriend · 21/08/2008 13:56

I'd be surprised if he was sitting on a fortune now - my memory is hazy but I'm fairly sure he was a bankrupt a long time ago. He would have also paid out a lot in legal fees and, as Crush said, I seem to remember him paying the families money (albeit not a lot) to drop the much worse charges he was facing.

Perhaps he'll spend years wandering around Bangkok airport?

tiredemma · 21/08/2008 14:00

He is a vile, horrible creature.

onceinalifetime · 21/08/2008 14:09

Has now agreed to return to London - media circus looming.
