I'm glad he's showing his true colours. A wolf in sheep's clothing. Perhaps all the people who fall for his flannel about the Tories having changed will wake up and smell the coffee.

What is wrong with expecting people to take responsibility for themselves? Why is it now impossible in this country to expect that the poor or obese try to help themselves?

I think he's right we need straight talking, saying someone is at risk of obesity does fudge the issue, we should say to someone you are obese. However I disagree totally with his assertion that "social problems are often the consequence of the choices that people make." A lack of education and support are not choices people make. If that was the case I'm sure 1000s of people working in the industrial heartlands of the north wouldn't have chosen to be made redundant in the 80s and piled up on the scrap heap by the Tories, creating generations of social deprivation.

I think he's right.

That's not to say that you can't have sympathy for people who find themselves in a bad situation.

i think it is good to have the old tories back with abit of fight in them. i am heartedly sick of all politicians spouting the same old platitudes. with a bit of luck gordon will fight back with some crazy socialism and we can go back to eighties (we have the recession so we are half way there.)

So people's obesity has nothing whatsoever to do with the selling off of sports facilities and playing fields to developers? Nothing to do with the constant pushing of high-fat-high-salt processed food as both a bargain and a treat? Nothing to do with the chunks of inner city where it's almost impossible to buy fresh food (because the supermarkets are all these big out of town megastores where it's difficut to do much shopping if you don't have a car)?
And poor people only have themselves to blame that their jobs got outsourced to another country where they are done for a tenth of the wages bill....

And funny how morality always comes down to 'forcing people to be married' ie trying to make women economically dependent on men so they will stay slaves.

Oh FFS, it's bloody shameful that so many people are keen to blame the poor for being poor. Say what you like about obesity (although on pragmatic grounds alone you should be supporting efforts to help people who are obese - it'll save your taxes in the end), but poverty is not a moral failing. It ill behoves those of us who are doing OK to blame the poor for not being as lucky as us.

With the economy the way it is, those who demonise the poor may find themselves joining the ranks soon. Don't be so quick to judge.

Surely if you are obese you are already aware of this fact? I think this speech is absolutely disgusting and again I cannot see a single policy from David Cameron. Its not a policy to tell people they are fat, is it? I am gobsmacked so many people think fat and poor people have only themselves to blame. Surely life is a little bit more complicated than that?

You can choose to eat healthily wherever you live IMO. It may not be as easy for some as going to the chip shop every night but it is possible.

I am both appalled and alightly impressed in the same moment with this.

I agree that people need to take more personal responsibility and it's time someone said it.

But saying "it's your own fault if you are poor" is a bit odd. The word "fault" seems wrong.

it is individual responsiblity and education but it is cheaper and easier to eat and drink fat foods

and watch tv and shop as your main leisure activities

most sport is expensive as is most fresh food

and most poor people watch a lot of tv and advertising sells them processed stuff and processed lifestyles

brands are cleverer than most individuals so not surprising they are hooked in

Finally, David Cameron comes out as a Tory.
