Police Apology To Muslim Community Over Police Dog

I don't know exactly why but this story has really ticked me off.

Not just because I like dogs but I appreciate the part they play in the police force, one of my neighbours when I was young was a police dog handler. Does this mean Muslims would refuse a guide dog, a hearing dog? If a Muslim child went missing would they turn the search dogs away? What about the ones who went to Pakistan after the earthquake?

This seems very petty and is perhaps why there are problems with integration - an apology was not appropriate to the point of being extreme.

I would imagine that there would be about 1 buckethead in about 300 Muslims who would actually get all stick-up-the-arse about a picture of a puppy used with no intention of offending anyone - and the majority of Muslims, devout or secular, have better things to think about. And I do think that anyone who is constantly taking offence over things that were never intended to offend - usualy some self-styled 'community leader' the majority of whose 'community wish he/she would shut up and piss off anyway - should be told to go and get a fucking life. Yes, in those words.

unknownrebelbang · 01/07/2008 22:39

norty blu!

unknownrebelbang · 01/07/2008 22:40

I'm the only one allowed to call DH a pig

fuzzywuzzy · 01/07/2008 22:43

youre prolly right madamez, I once had a very strange ocnversation with a police officer, who seemed to think that muslim women were expected islamically to take care of their inlaws!!!
I had to inform him that no they did not, in fact the husband was expected to provide seperate living arrangments for his wife ie a house if he could afford it a floor in the house of his parents if he could afford that or a room or a corner that is hers entirely....but a muslim woman was not expected to wash her mother inlaws back (told you it was a bizarre conversation!).

It seems that one person declares they're muslim and then says something utterly outrageous and then we're all tarred and feathered for it!

FairyMum · 01/07/2008 22:46

"There's nothing wrong with dogs, their saliva is considered unclean and your meant to wash if a dog comes and licks you but ermm being offended by the very existence of dogs is not a tenet of Islam (least not the last time I checked)."

Dogs saliva is unclean? You are meant to wash?
That's 'ealth and safety gone mad, innit?

madamez · 01/07/2008 23:15

I mean, you could possibly (if you were a bit of a nasty bigot who dressed it up as complaining about 'political correctness') unearth some or other alleged Muslim to demand that butchers' shops stop putting bacon in the window because it was offensive, but the vast majority of Muslims are not interested in controlling the eating habits of non-muslims, either.

edam · 01/07/2008 23:22

Daft story but the really irritating thing is the police apologising. That is out of line. No need to apologise for using a picture of a puppy on a postcard, FFS. Just feeds extremists.

Blu · 01/07/2008 23:36

feeds extremists - possibly.
Feeds (to binge eating levels) frothing-at -mouth 'it's polictical correctness GONE MAD!' hysterics - defiitely.

I agree - they should not hav apologised

DeeRiguer · 01/07/2008 23:46

hertsnessex · 01/07/2008 23:56

pathetic, and even more pathetic that the police apologised.

DeeRiguer · 01/07/2008 23:58

thanks cali
oh ffs
this really has gawn mad
its a puppy and man fighting crime, what's not to like

cali · 02/07/2008 00:01

makes you wonder where/when this is all going to stop?

It just seems really silly and probably only the view of a minority of the Muslim population.

DeeRiguer · 02/07/2008 00:17

yes and also most people would see it like that, muslim, shinto or whatever
and would should be offended that their beleif could be portrayed like this?
i cant see any of the muslims i am around getting uptight over this
its insulting

madamez · 02/07/2008 00:53

Well yes - what is (understandably) offensive to Muslims (or Christians, or athiests, or Jews, or gay people, or people of any skin colour or strange hobby or whatever, is some buckethead taking offence on their behalf and making them look like uptight dipsticks.

deeeja · 02/07/2008 01:14

This is some sort of madness, surely!
I am a muslim and love dogs, especially gsd's. I have trained them in the past, and that certainly involved alot of patting, and being licked. I used to have a beautiful gsd, who sadly passed away a few years ago. I trained her not to lick me or my clothes, she was incredibly clever. She loved my eldest ds, and was his constant companion.
Other muslims that I knew at the time, loved her too. I can't believe that muslims would complain about a puppy. Incidentally a cat's tongue is considered dirty aswell, as far as I know.
Surely a dog is one of God's creatures, and so should be seen as part of a beautiful creation.
I have no objection to police dogs, and am considering getting a gsd for my autistic son, which would be more of a pet, for me too ofcourse.
This story is madness. More hysteria about muslims and islam in general.
The islamic view-point towards animals, is that they have the right to be taken care of and a muslim has full responsibility for any animal in his/her care, and will have to account for that on the day of judgement. It is certainly not acceptable to hate an animal just because it has unhygenic(sp?) characteristics.

ladymariner · 02/07/2008 01:21

No way should the police have apologised, no way. I too am totally sick to death of all this bloody PC and am right with madamez on the choice of words to be used against the people proporting this sort of absolute rubbish!!!!

Greyriverside · 02/07/2008 07:06

The "buckethead taking offence on their behalf" was apparently Mohammed Asif, a Dundee councillor and member of the Tayside Joint Police Board

fuzzywuzzy · 02/07/2008 07:20

Are you serious, there is a name to the person who has taken offence to a picture of a dog on behalf of Islam??? I'm going to see if I can contact him.....

cali · 02/07/2008 08:44

"Found this to contact person in question"

edam · 02/07/2008 08:48

That's what I meant, Blu - feeds people who want to rant and rage about PC gone mad, or racists, or whatever AND self-righteous gits who use their religion as an excuse for pushing everyone else around.

stitch · 02/07/2008 08:53

i'm a muslim, and this story has annoyed me
what a stupid stupid waste of time and resources. and pandering to stupiditites.

having said that, i personally cant stand dogs. i think they are loathesome fitlhy creatures. however that opinion is nothing at all to do with being muslim. its just me and my eccentric nature. and if i were ever to be in need of a guide dog, then, i would be forcedto change my opinions of man's best friend.
