Police Apology To Muslim Community Over Police Dog

I don't know exactly why but this story has really ticked me off.

Not just because I like dogs but I appreciate the part they play in the police force, one of my neighbours when I was young was a police dog handler. Does this mean Muslims would refuse a guide dog, a hearing dog? If a Muslim child went missing would they turn the search dogs away? What about the ones who went to Pakistan after the earthquake?

This seems very petty and is perhaps why there are problems with integration - an apology was not appropriate to the point of being extreme.

the link didn't work for me. Is this it?

puppy-police-advert-after-Muslim-complaints

I think it's crazy. We're not asking them to eat it or even to pet it. It's a picture ffs.

I'm fed up with us pandering to this kind of thing.

charliecat · 01/07/2008 21:51

bloody hell.

PussinJimmyChoos · 01/07/2008 21:54

Oh for pete's sake! I'm Muslim and I wouldn't bat an eye lid over a picture like this!!

I'm also profoundly deaf and if I ever had need of a hearing dog, then my religion would allow it, same applies for sniffer dogs etc.

The only issue we have with dogs is when they lick our clothes - we aren't allowed to pray with clothes on that have been licked by dogs because dogs lick other dogs arses, will eat all manner of things and so their spit its considered unclean - that's all there is too it really.

Articles like that really cheese me off as it just makes the majority of Muslims look mad!!

Ihavelayers · 01/07/2008 21:54

The police were wrong to apoligise.

PussinJimmyChoos · 01/07/2008 21:55

to it rather...

And although I'm more of a cat person (can't you tell from the nick name!!), I still love dogs!

BigGitDad · 01/07/2008 21:55

It is this kind of thing that the far right thrive on and you can bet your bottom dollar come the next election this story will be used as propoganda. Then people wonder why there is the rise of the far right in th UK?

"pandering to this kind of thing" - isn't that offensive to pandas?

Greyriverside · 01/07/2008 22:01

PussinJimmyChoos, I'm glad to hear you say that. It sounded way over the top in the article.

And funnily enough I'm with you on dogs licking you or your clothes. I'd want to wash and change and I'm an atheist.

Greyriverside · 01/07/2008 22:03

lol at 'isn't that offensive to pandas'.

littleducks · 01/07/2008 22:05

From a religious point of view, I wouldnt keep a dog or touch a dog (from the scholars i follow dog hair is also considered unclean).

However dogs are allowed to be kept for hunting/farming etc. So i think using them to search for people who be seen as a perfectly sensible and useful thing to do.
As regard to police dogs, if they found my child i would undoubtly be pleased (the only thing you have to do is wash yourself or clothes so not a big deal imho) i wouldnt want one to search my house but hopefully if i dont deal drugs or commit a crime that wouldnt be an issue. As for a picture? I probably wouldnt even notice it, a picture isnt dirty fgs!

jenniebee · 01/07/2008 22:06

LOL to margoandjerry.

FFS i cant stand all this PC crap anymore, no one can seem to do anything without offending certain people whether age sex race. (i'm sure i've missed a whole load out which of course means i'm being politicaly incorrect or whatever!) AAAAAHHHHHHH

and breath

VeniVidiVickiQV · 01/07/2008 22:06

Goodness me!

ravenAK · 01/07/2008 22:06

I'm also grossed out by licky dogs. Pet dogs generally, really.

But I do think working dogs can be v useful, as OP pointed out.

So - if shopowners have decided not to display this poster, that's for them to decide. But the police should certainly not feel any need to apologise.

FairyMum · 01/07/2008 22:07

My cat is now a Telegraph -reader.

jenniebee · 01/07/2008 22:08

i've calmed down now

Nighbynight · 01/07/2008 22:12

I know many muslims (ex's family and friends), and have never heard anyone say anything as daft as this.

what PussinJimmyChoos said

FairyMum · 01/07/2008 22:13

I even have muslim friends who have dogs as pets. Are they not supposed to?

margoandjerry · 01/07/2008 22:14

I don't think anyone, muslim scholar or otherwise, considers dogs to be actively clean do they? I mean even if you love dogs, you are not likely to love them for their hygienic habits and fresh-smelling breath.

PeaMcLean · 01/07/2008 22:14

It's in the Telegraph.

One of the first people they quote is from "The Campaign Against Political Correctness".

Do you think this is completely balanced journalism? If you're feeling wound up by "political correctness gone mad", just remember where you read it.

I'd be interested to see the same story elsewhere.

FairyMum · 01/07/2008 22:15

I love the "political correctness gone mad"-BRIGADE.

fuzzywuzzy · 01/07/2008 22:21

I'm muslim (love saying that on these sort of threads).

There's nothing wrong with dogs, their saliva is considered unclean and your meant to wash if a dog comes and licks you but ermm being offended by the very existence of dogs is not a tenet of Islam (least not the last time I checked).

Having said that I wish my youngest child would find dogs a little more offensive, she was kissing the ugliest most vicious looking dog a few months back, and it was slobbering all over her!!! bleurgghhhhh
I dont personally hate dogs I often stop and talk to my neighbour whilst she walks her cute little scottish terrier, he jumps all over me and apart from ensuring I am not wearing my outdoor clothes when I pray I have not had to go kill myself or anything over it.....

jenniebee · 01/07/2008 22:22

I wish it was just what i read that made me wound up, and agree that there is never going tp be a completely balanced view, my anger is more about how it affects my job and the fact that there is so much red tape you cant seem to do anything without offending someone.

Blu · 01/07/2008 22:23

I am too distracted by the man from The campaign agains political correctness (LOL - ffs) making the obvious comparison betwen dogs used to advertise a product for wiping up shit with the same dogs used to make the connection in our mind with the police to have any serious view on this ridiculous over-blown story.

There is also something forming in my mind about the obvious animal to both advertise the police and offend muslims would have been a pig....but it's perhaps best left unthought....

The muslim half of DP's family would certainly not recognise this level of random objection to image of puppies.

jenniebee · 01/07/2008 22:28

Blu...pig... brilliant!
