Please support a Europe-wide missing child alert system

Kate and Gerry McCann have been in Brussels at the European Parliament presenting a declaration proposing a Europe wide alert system when a child goes missing. The similar AMBER alert system used in the US has led to the successful recovery of many abducted children. 393 MEPs need to sign this in order for it to be looked into.

Please take a moment to click on the link in order to identify your MEP and request that they sign the declaration to move this proposal forward.

Here is a sample text which you can cut and paste-

I am writing to request that you sign the declaration presented to the
European Parliament by Kate and Gerry McCann requesting a Europe-wide
alert system and telephone hotline for when a child is abducted.

We will never know whether this would have helped in their own case and
led to the recovery of their daughter, Madeleine, but there is
overwhelming evidence from the United States that such a system can
prove crucial in recovering an abducted child before they are harmed.

I feel it is vitally important for the safety of all our children that
the implementation of such a system receives your full support.

I don't know if anyone else has had responses from the following two MEP but here are the responses to my emails (2 out of 7 so far):

"Thank you for your email. Mr Titley has already signed the Written Declaration on this matter. With best wishes Roger Fellows(assistant to Gary Titley MEP)"

and...

"Thanks for your email and you will be pleased to note that I have already signed the Written Declaration and will do all I can for the protection of all children.
BRIAN SIMPSON MEP"

Just received very positive replies from David Martin and Alyn Smith, both Scottish MEPs supporting the declaration. Am still waiting for three others.
You're a star popstar.

I've done it, also posted the link on another website I use. Unfortunately, I doubt it will have much success on there, but worth a try.

tazmosis · 02/05/2008 22:56

Done it.

I've had a very postive reply from UKIP MEP Gerard Batten. He makes some excellent points. (I wonder if he read my last post!!).

From Gerard Batten (UKIP MEP):

'As a father my heart goes out to the McCanns and I understand your concerns and your desire for the greatest protection available for children.

Normally I do not sign Written Declarations as a matter of political principle, since I will not call for measures that would increase the legislative power of the European Union. As you may know, the UK Independence Party stands for Britain's withdrawal from the European Union.

However in this instance I can make an exception and sign the Declaration as it specifically does not call for legislation to be enacted by the European Union.

I would also like to make the point that the proposal only focuses on introducing such a system within the EU. In my view it would be far more sensible and comprehensive if the greatest number of countries possible were involved. In today's world holiday destinations are far and wide and thus I would argue an agreement should be pursued at the international level. The anomaly of an 'EU-wide system' would be that countries such as Switzerland and Turkey, both incredibly popular holiday destinations and bordering EU states, would not be involved in the system.'

barbamama · 03/05/2008 18:58

got a reply in the affirmative here too.

popstar · 03/05/2008 20:27

Wow- a helpful UKIP MEP! Glad he's applying common sense over political principles.

Another email with another MEP signing up!!

"Thank you for your recent email regarding the written declaration on emergency co-operation in recovering missing children, and the amber alert system. The text of the declaration can be found at www.europarl.europa.eu/sides/getDoc.do?pubRef=-//EP//NONSGML+WDECL+P6-DCL-2008-0036+0+DOC+WOR D+V0//EN&language=EN.

I am delighted to say that I have signed this declaration, and took part in its launch at the European Parliament. It is an issue that I have been working on for a number of years.

I hope that the declaration will receive the support required. There is no doubt that a British equivalent of the US 'Amber Alert' system would save children's lives if it were to be introduced. The speed in which a single dedicated control centre could get the message out to different branches of the Police, TV and radio and roadside electronic billboards would help rescue many children within the crucial first 72 hours.

Yours sincerely

Liz Lynne MEP"

Just reveived this

Thank you for your email regarding the launch of a European Parliament
Written Declaration on 'emergency co-operation in recovering missing
children'. Labour MEPs have been concerned about the issue of tracking
missing children within the EU for a number of years. As a result, this
Written Declaration calling for an EU-wide missing children alert was
co-sponsored by our colleague Glenys Kinnock MEP along with a number of
other MEPs.

This Written Declaration is open to signature and if it is signed by 50%
of MEPs, then it will be passed to the European Commission to represent
the European Parliament's official position.

I attach a copy of the Declaration for your information.

Also, please acknowledge the existence of Europol, the European Police
Office, that handles Europe-wide criminal intelligence.

Yours sincerely

Michael Cashman
Member of the European Parliament for the West Midlands

Just thought you'd all like to know that the declaration has been passed which means there can now be a serious debate in the European Parliament. Still a long way to go but over the first hurdle.

Thanks for all the support!
